A New Garden Pea Cultivar "Daehyup 2" with Large Seed Size and High Sugar Contents

        Won Young Han,In Youl Baek,Sang Ouk Shin,Hyun Tae Kim,Jong Min Ko,Nam Suk Kang,Ki Won Oh,Chan Sik Jung,Doo Chull Shin,Sung Taek Kang,Myung Gun Chung,Keum Yong Park,Duck Yong Suh 한국육종학회 2007 한국육종학회지 Vol.39 No.3

A new garden pea cultivar, Daehyup 2, was developed at the Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute (YARI) in 2006. It was selected from the cross between Olwandu and Sachulwandu in 1996. The preliminary, advanced, and regional yield trials for evaluation and selection of this cultivar were carried out from 2003 to 2006. It has white flower, yellow cotyledon, absent or very weakly curved pod shape and yellow seed color. It was resistant to virus and powdery mildew disease. The 100 green seed weight of Daehyup 2 was 65.5 g, which was 8.9 g heavier than check cultivar. The sucrose and total sugar contents of fresh pod of Daehyup 2 were 11.1% and 12.5%, respectively, which were 3.2% and 4.3% higher than those of Sachulwandu. The fresh pod yield of Daehyup 2 was similar to that of Sachulwandu with 12.16 ton per hectare in the regional yield trials carried out in three locations of Korea from 2005 to 2006.

Growth Response of Rice and Paddy Weeds Under Elevated Temperatures

Won, Ok Jae,Eom, Min Young,Kim, Young Tae,Bir, Md. Shahidul Haque,Park, Tae Seon,Uddin, Md. Romij,Oh, Taek-Keun,Shinogi, Yoshiyuki,Park, Kee Woong FACULTY OF AGRIC PUBLICATIONS-KYUSHU UNIV 2017 Journal of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu Univ Vol. No.

This study was conducted to investigate the growth response of rice and annual paddy weeds under elevated temperatures. In the context of climate change, temperature is one of the most important climatic factors influencing the growth of crops as well as weeds. Rice and three major annual paddy weeds (Monochoria vaginalis, Echinochloa crus galli, and Ludwigia prostrata) were grown under different temperature regimes (ambient, ambient+0.8 degrees C, ambient+1.9 degrees C, and ambient+3.4 degrees C). Results revealed that the growth of rice and three annual paddy weed species increased with the temperature rise in the phytotrons. Above ground dry weight of rice was 1.31, 1.67, and 1.73 times higher at ambient+0.8, +1.9 and +3.4 degrees C, respectively, than it was at ambient. Similar growth responses to rice was observed in E. crus galli and M. vaginalis under the elevated temperatures. L. prostrate exhibited the most significant increases in leaf stage, leaf area, plant height, and plant dry weight, which were, respectively, 2.94, 3.57, 1.69 and 2.86 times higher at ambient+3.4 degrees C than at ambient. Our findings suggest that climate change in the form of instant rising of temperatures might have an influence on the growth of rice and weeds and might confer relatively low competitive ability to rice.

Asterias pectinifera -Derived Collagen Peptides Mixed with Halocynthia roretzi Extracts Exhibit Anti-Photoaging Activities during Exposure to UV Irradiation, and Antibacterial Properties

        Oh Soo-Jin,Park Ji-Ye,Won Bada,Oh Yong-Taek,Yang Seung-Chan,Shin Ok Sarah 한국미생물·생명공학회 2022 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.32 No.11

Asterias pectinifera, a species of starfish and cause of concern in the aquaculture industry, was recently identified as a source of non-toxic and highly water-soluble collagen peptides. In this study, we investigated the antioxidant and anti-photoaging functions of compounds formulated using collagen peptides from extracts of Asterias pectinifera and Halocynthia roretzi (AH). Our results showed that AH compounds have various skin protective functions, including antioxidant effects, determined by measuring the scavenging activity of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals, as well as anti-melanogenic effects, determined by measuring tyrosinase inhibition activity. To determine whether ethosome-encapsulated AH compounds (E(AH)) exert ultraviolet (UV)-protective effects, human dermal fibroblasts or keratinocytes were incubated with E(AH) before and after exposure to UVA or UVB. E(AH) treatment led to inhibition of photoaging-induced secretion of matrix metalloproteinase-1 and interleukin-6 and -8, which are associated with inflammatory responses during UV irradiation. Finally, the antibacterial effects of AH and E(AH) were confirmed against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Our results indicate that E(AH) has the potential for use in the development of cosmetics with a range of skin protective functions.

      • Effect of drug compliance on health care costs in newly-diagnosed dementia: Analysis of nationwide population-based data

Oh, Seung-Taek,Han, Kyu-Tae,Choi, Won-Jung,Park, Jaesub Elsevier 2019 Journal of Psychiatric Research Vol.118 No.-

Abstract

Background

The cost-effectiveness of both cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine by delaying nursing home placement has been supported by numerous studies. The importance of sustained pharmacological treatment in dementia has been relatively less recognized by public health policies compared to early diagnosis. We investigated the effect of the drug (donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine, and memantine) compliance on the health care costs in newly-diagnosed dementia.

Methods

National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database which covers the entire population of South Korea was used for analysis. Health care expenditure of patients newly-diagnosed with dementia in between 2012 and 2014 was investigated for 3–5 years. For drug compliance, we used Medication Possession Ratio (MPR) that indicates the percentage of time a patient has access to medication. Multivariate linear regression analysis including generalized estimated equation and gamma distribution was used for statistical analysis.

Results

We identified 252,594 patients who were both prescribed with cognitive enhancers and newly diagnosed with dementia. When initial MPR increased 20%, total health care costs decreased 8.4% (RR = 0.916, 95%; CI 0.914 to 0.916). Same relationship was shown with medical costs related to dementia, admission to a general hospital, and emergency room visits. When MPR increased 20% compared to the previous year, the total health care costs, admission to a general hospital, emergency room visits, and admission to a nursing hospital decreased.

Conclusions

This population-based retrospective cohort study provides evidence that patients newly-diagnosed with dementia who showed higher initial drug compliance or maintained antidementia drugs (Cholinesterase inhibitors and memantine) would benefit in total health-care costs.

Reflection of Pain in Cancer Patients Using a New Screening Tool for Psychological Distress

        Oh, Seung-Taek,Lee, San,Lee, Hyeok,Chang, Myung Hee,Hong, Soojung,Choi, Won-Jung Korean Psychosomatic Society 2017 정신신체의학 Vol.25 No.1

Objectives : The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between psychological distress and pain in cancer patients. Methods : 249 patients with cancer who visited National Health Insurance Service Ilsan Hospital between April 2013 and March 2014 were evaluated with National Cancer Center Psychological Symptom Inventory(NCC-PSI) which consisted of Modified Distress Thermometer(MDT) and Modified Impact Thermometer(MIT). Each scale was divided into 3 subscales targeting separate symptoms: insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Psychological distress was defined as positive for those who scored above the cutoff values in at least one of all six subscales. The Numeric Rating Scale for Pain(NRS-Pain) was used to assess the subjective severity of pain. Logistic regression was performed to investigate the association between psychological distress and pain. Results : Univariate logistic regression analysis showed that pain, gender, compliance, and two subscale scores of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS) were significantly associated with psychological distress. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that pain and HADS anxiety subscale score maintained a statistically significant association with psychological distress adjusted for variables including age, gender, years of education, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, cancer stage, Charlson Comorbidity Index, compliance, and HADS depression subscale score. One point increase in pain was 1.31 times more likely to cause psychological distress. In secondary analysis, pain was significantly associated with all subscales of NCC-PSI, except MIT-anxiety subscale. Conclusions : This study suggests that NCC-PSI, a screening tool for psychological distress, reflects pain. We recommend that physicians who treat cancer patients consider the examination of psychological distress which provides comprehensive evaluation of various factors regarding quality of life.

Association analysis of thromboxane A synthase 1 gene polymorphisms with aspirin intolerance in asthmatic patients.

        Oh, Sun-Hee,Kim, Yong-Hoon,Park, Se-Min,Cho, Sung-Hwan,Park, Jong-Sook,Jang, An-Soo,Park, Sung-Woo,Uh, Soo-Taek,Lee, Youg-Mok,Kim, Mi-Kyeong,Choi, Inseon S,Cho, Sang Heon,Hong, Chein-Soo,Lee, Yong Won Ashley Publications 2011 Pharmacogenomics Vol.12 No.3

Aim: Thromboxane A synthase (TBXAS1) converts prostaglandin H to thromboxane A, a potent constrictor of smooth respiratory muscle. Thus, functional alterations of the TBXAS1 gene may contribute to aspirin-intolerant asthma (AIA). Materials & methods: We investigated the relationship between SNPs in the TBXAS1 gene and AIA. Asthmatics (n = 470) were categorized into AIA (20% or greater decreases in forced expiratory volume in 1 s [FEV(1)], or 15% to 19% decreases in FEV(1) with naso-ocular or cutaneous reactions) and aspirin-tolerant asthma (ATA). A total of 101 SNPs were genotyped. mRNA expression of the TBXAS1 gene by peripheral blood mononuclear cells and plasma thromboxane B2 (TXB2) concentrations were measured by reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR and ELISA. Results: Logistic regression analysis showed that the rare allele frequency of rs6962291 in intron 9 was significantly lower in the AIA group (n = 115) than in the ATA group (n = 270) (p(corr) = 0.04). The linear regression analysis revealed a strong association of rs6962291 with the aspirin challenge-induced FEV(1) fall (p = 0.003). RT-PCR revealed an exon-12-deleted splice variant. We measured TBXAS1 mRNA levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The mRNA levels of the full-length wild-type and splice variant were significantly higher in the TT homozygotes than in the AA homozygotes of rs6962291 (1.00 ± 0.18 vs 0.57 ± 0.03 and 1.00 ± 0.18 vs 0.21 ± 0.05, p = 0.047 and 0.001, respectively). The plasma TXB2 level was significantly lower in rs6962291 AA carriers than in rs6962291 TT (p = 0.016) carriers. Conclusion: The rare allele of rs6962291 may play a protective role against aspirin hypersensitivity via a lower catalytic activity of the TBXAS1 gene, attributed to the increase of a nonfunctioning isoform of TBXAS1. Outcomes of Arthroscopic Scaphoid Excision and Lunocapitate Fusion for Advanced Traumatic Arthritis of the Wrist

        Won-Taek Oh,Heon-Jung Park,Il-Hyun Koh,Yun-Rak Choi 대한정형외과학회 2023 Clinics in Orthopedic Surgery Vol.15 No.2

Background: Arthroscopic lunocapitate (LC) fusion can be an alternative surgical treatment for scapholunate advanced collapse (SLAC) or scaphoid nonunion advanced collapse (SNAC) of the wrist. We retrospectively reviewed patients who had arthroscopic LC fusion to estimate clinical and radiological outcomes. Methods: From January 2013 to February 2017, all patients with SLAC (stage II or III) or SNAC (stage II or III) wrists, who underwent arthroscopic LC fusion with scaphoidectomy and were followed up for a minimum of 2 years, were enrolled in this retrospective study. Clinical outcomes included visual analog scale (VAS) pain, grip strength, active range of wrist motion, Mayo wrist score (MWS), and the Disabilities of Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) score. Radiologic outcomes included bony union, carpal height ratio, joint space height ratio, and loosening of screws. We also performed group analysis between patients with 1 and 2 headless compression screws to fix the LC interval. Results: Eleven patients were assessed for 32.6 ± 8.0 months. Union was achieved in 10 patients (union rate, 90.9%). There was improvmenet in mean VAS pain score (from 7.9 ± 1.0 to 1.6 ± 0.7, p = 0.003) and grip strength (from 67.5% ± 11.4% to 81.8% ± 8.0%, p = 0.003) postoperatively. The mean MWS and DASH score were 40.9 ± 13.8 and 38.3 ± 8.2, respectively, preoperatively and improved to 75.5 ± 8.2 and 11.3 ± 4.1, respectively, postoperatively (p < 0.001 for all). Radiolucent screw loosening occurred in 3 patients (27.3%), including 1 nonunion patient and 1 patient who underwent screw removal due to the screw migration encroaching the lunate fossa of radius. In group analysis, only the frequency of radiolucent loosening was higher in 1 screw (3 of 4) than 2 screw fixation (0 of 7) (p = 0.024). Conclusions: Arthroscopic scaphoid excision and LC fusion for patients with advanced SLAC or SNAC of the wrist was effective and safe only in cases fixed with 2 headless compression screws. We recommend arthroscopic LC fusion using 2 screws rather than 1 to decrease radiolucent loosening, which might affect complications such as nonunion, delayed union, or screw migration.

Herbicidal Activity and Mode of Action of Streptomyces scopuliridis Metabolites

Won, Ok Jae,Kim, Young Tae,Choi, Jung Sup,Oh, Taek-Keun,Shinogi, Yoshiyuki,Park, Kee Woong FACULTY OF AGRIC PUBLICATIONS-KYUSHU UNIV 2016 Journal of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kyushu Univ Vol. No.

This study was conducted to examine the effects and the mode of action of a natural herbicidal substance, Streptomyces scopuliridis metabolites (SSM), which consists of herbicidin A and herbicidin B, derived from Streptomyces scopuliridis. Necrosis of Echinochloa oryzoides, Digitaria ciliaris, Abutilon theophrasti and Amaranthus retroflexus occurred within 3 days of SSM application at the concentration of 4,000 ppm. Symptoms of herbicidal action of SSM started to show soon following application, and appeared earlier than those caused by glyphosate but later than those caused by paraquat. Overall, herbicidal action of SSM appeared with a time interval similar to glufosinate ammonium following foliar application. Chlorophyll fluorescence level (Fv/Fm) was not affected by SSM application suggesting that SSM application did not inhibit photosynthesis of the treated plants. The amount of electrolyte leakage caused by SSM increased steadily with time, and was proportional to the concentration of SSM. Electrolyte leakage induced by paraquat occurred more rapidly than by SSM. No signs of translocation of SSM in a downward direction through the phloem was observed in either D. ciliaris or A. theophrasti. Based on the results from this study, the mode of action of SSM involves the rapid disruption of cell membrane caused by an unknown mechanism other than inhibition of photosynthesis. In the future, SSM would be a good candidate for a contact herbicide; however, a better understanding of its mode of action has to precede attempts for commercial development and practical application.
