<P>Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease is an autosomal dominant inherited tumor syndrome associated with germline mutations in the VHL gene. VHL disease, as well as several other cancer syndromes, has been associated with an increased risk of pheochromocytomas, which are catecholamine-secreting tumors of the adrenal gland. VHL disease genotype-phenotype correlations have been well established based on the type of mutations in the VHL gene. However, although many groups have reported VHL germline mutations in different countries, no previous report has described VHL gene mutations in VHL disease and/or pheochromocytoma patients in Korea. In this study, we used direct sequencing to investigate VHL germline mutations in Korean patients with VHL disease or pheochromocytomas (11 VHL patients and 3 additional members from 7 families, 2 patients from 1 family with familial pheochromocytoma, and 2 cases of isolated pheochromocytoma). We found a total of 7 VHL germline mutations (6 missense and 1 frameshift), 3 of which were novel (323_324delGC, 355T>C and 361G>A). No VHL germline mutation was found in the 2 patients with isolated pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas. This study provides informative data for VHL germline mutations and VHL-related phenotypes in Korea.</P>

<P>This study aimed to determine the potential impact of an oil spill on intertidal meiofauna at a clean, sandy beach in Korea. This objective was accomplished by examining changes in the structure of meiofaunal assemblages after a controlled oil spill of different concentrations on the beach. The concentration of total petroleum hydrocabon (TPH) in the experimental plots after oil application was expectedly higher for the first 4 d compared to before oil application. The TPH concentrations decreased at a faster rate in the first 4 d, and then progressively. The sharp decline in meiofaunal density in the experimental plots during the first 4 d after the spill might be attributed to the short-term toxic effects of the oil. This suggestion is supported by a significant negative interaction of the TPH on meiofaunal density during the study period. The period of low density of meiofauna also coincided with the maximum concentration of TPH in the sediment. The multivariate indices proved to be highly efficient, showing that samples contaminated with oil had high TPH concentrations, and were partially separated in terms of meiofaunal communities from samples before oil application or samples with low TPH concentrations. The structure of the meiofaunal communities in the experimental plots was similar before and 1 month after oil application. However, the density of meiofauna sharply decreased immediately after oil application in the experiment plots. Furthermore, the meiofaunal density recovered slowly as time passed.</P>

An extracellular matrix protein, transforming growth factor-beta-induced protein (TGFBIp/βig-h3), which is induced by transforming growth factor-β in the human cornea, skin, and matrix of many connective tissues, is associated with the adhesion, migration, proliferation, and differentiation of various cells. TGFBIp contains four homologous repeat domains, known as FAS1 domains, where certain mutations have been considered to cause corneal dystrophies. In this study, backbone NMR assignments of FAS1-3/FAS1-4 tandem domain were obtained and compared with those previously known for the isolated FAS1-4 domain. The results corroborate in solution the inter-domain interaction between FAS1-3 and FAS1-4 in TGFBIp.

This study was performed to investigate the urinary methyl hippuric acid (UMHA) excretion among aircraft maintenance workers exposed to xylene by examination of blood test, urine test and biochemical tests. Study subjects (301) were divided into 2 groups; non-exposed group (n=123, who were not exposed to xylene), and exposed group (n=178, who were exposed to xylene). The average of blood level and MHA level was normal. The γ-GTP level was 35.5 IU/L (45.7%) in the exposed group and 27.9 IU/L (44.7%) in the non-exposed (control) group. The proportion of total cholesterol (TG) level higher than 150 mg/dl were 34.3% in the exposed group and 21.1% in the non-exposed group. These results were showed statistically significant difference (x2 = 6.10, P<0.05). Other items showed no statistically significant differences. The results of urine tests were no statistically significant differences in protein, occult blood and glucose level.

23-Dihydroganoderic acid N, a triterpenoid compound, was investigated whether it may show cytotoxic activity against U937, HeLa, NCI-H460 and MCF-7 cancer cells by MTT test. As a result, 23-dihydroganoderic acid N show sensitive to MCF-7 cells among NCI-H460, HeLa, U937, and MCF-7 cells.
