N/A Backgrounds : An inhibitory effect of magnesium L-ascorbyl-2-phosphate (VC-PMG, a stable derivative of ascorbic acid) on melanogenesis has been described. Furthermore, glabridin in licorice is known to have inhibitory effects on melanogenesis and widely used for raw materials for depigmenting agents. Objective : The purposes of this study are to provide objective data by measuring the visual clinical effects of VC-PMG with the colorimeter and to promote the development of de-pigmenting agents. Methods : 20 volunteers joined the study. With an artificial UVB irradiation, eight tanned areas were made on the inner side of the forearm. During two months, each tanned area was treated with five whitening cosmetics with 3% VC-PMG and increasing concentration of licorice from 0% to 3%. Darkness degree of each area was measured weekly by the colorimeter and the visual assessment. Results : For all cosmetics, whitening effect was measured by colorimeter and visual as-sessment. The cosmetic containing VC-PMG 3% and licorice 1% had more whitening effect than any other cosmetics of different concentrations. Moreover, VC-PMG 3% alone also had whitening effect in some volunteers. Conclusion : VC-PMG was clinically found to have whitening effect.

BackgroundTo compare the clinical value of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography and transient elastography (TE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence prediction after radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and to investigate other predictors of HCC recurrence.Patients and methodsBetween 2011 and 2016, 130 patients with HCC who underwent ARFI elastography and TE within 6 months before curative RFA were prospectively enrolled. Independent predictors of HCC recurrence were analyzed separately using ARFI elastography and TE. ARFI elastography and TE accuracy to predict HCC recurrence was determined by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis.ResultsOf all included patients (91 men; mean age, 63.5 years; range: 43-84 years), 51 (42.5%) experienced HCC recurrence during the follow-up period (median, 21.9 months). In multivariable analysis using ARFI velocity, serum albumin and ARFI velocity [hazard ratios: 2.873; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.806-4.571; P<0.001] were independent predictors of recurrence, and in multivariable analysis using TE value, serum albumin and TE value (hazard ratios: 1.028; 95% CI: 1.013-1.043; P<0.001) were independent predictors of recurrence. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of ARFI elastography (0.821; 95% CI: 0.747-0.895) was not statistically different from that of TE (0.793; 95% CI: 0.712-0.874) for predicting HCC recurrence (P=0.827). The optimal ARFI velocity and TE cutoff values were 1.6m/s and 14kPa, respectively.ConclusionARFI elastography and TE yield comparable predictors of HCC recurrence after RFA.

Influence of Carbon Black as a Conductor on Electrode Characteristics for Lithium Secondary Battery
Yoon, Se-Rah,Lee, Joong-Kee,Ju, Jae-Beck,Cho, Byung-Won,Park, Dal-Keun 한국탄소학회 2002 Carbon Letters Vol.3 No.1
The electrochemical behavior of the $LiCoO_2$ electrode, containing carbon black as a conductor, depends upon the nature and characteristics of carbon black. In this study, six different kinds of carbon blacks were employed to investigate the relationship between the properties of carbon blacks and electrochemical characteristics of the electrode. The larger amount of surface oxygen functional groups brought the lower electrical conductivity for the carbon blacks. The electrical conductivity of carbon blacks was closely related to the impurities such as ash and volatile content. The rate capability and cyclability of the electrode were improved with the higher conductivity of carbon blacks used. So, it can be concluded that high conductive carbon black plays an important role as a conductor for high rate of charge-discharge capability and initial efficiency.
Amyloid Arthropathy of the Hip Joint Associated with Multiple Myeloma: A Case Report

Amyloidosis is a disease characterized by the deposition of non-soluble fibrous protein in multiple tissues with a number of possible causes. This protein deposition can occur in any tissue, yet is most commonly seen in kidneys, heart, and gastrointestinal tracts. However, invasion to bone tissues is not often reported. The deposition of amyloid proteins in bone tissues may result in joint pain and pathological fractures; it is important to elucidate the causes and detect early to determine prognosis and treat optimally. In the present case report, with relevant literature review, the authors report a case of total hip arthroplasty in an amyloidosis patient.

The proliferation, migration, cytokine release, and contraction of airway smooth muscle cells are key events in the airway remodeling process that occur in lung disease such as asthma, chronic obstruction pulmonary disease, and cancer. These events can be modulated by a number of factors, including cigarette smoke extract (CSE). CSE-induced alterations in the viability, migration, and contractile abilities of normal human airway cells remain unclear. This study investigated the effect of CSE on cell viability, migration, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$ secretion, and contraction in normal human bronchial smooth muscle cells (HBSMCs). Treatment of HBSMCs with 10% CSE induced cell death, and the death was accompanied by the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). CSE-induced cell death was reduced by N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC), an ROS scavenger. In addition, CSE reduced the migration ability of HBSMCs by 75%. The combination of NAC with CSE blocked the CSE-induced reduction of cell migration. However, CSE had no effect on TNF-${\alpha}$ secretion and NF-${\kappa}B$ activation. CSE induced an increase in intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration in 64% of HBSMCs. CSE reduced the contractile ability of HBSMCs, and the ability was enhanced by NAC treatment. These results demonstrate that CSE treatment induces cell death and reduces migration and contraction by increasing ROS generation in normal HBSMCs. These results suggest that CSE may induce airway change through cell death and reduction in migration and contraction of normal HBSMCs.

In this study, a highly diastereoselective synthesis of anti-1 ,2-aminoalcohol was explored starting from L-amino acids as chiral sources. The higher yield and diastereoselectivity was shown when the aza-Claisen rearranqement was performed with allylic trichloroacetimidate 6a in the presence of palldium(II) catalyst.
