Situating social games in the everyday: an Australian perspective

This paper explores some of the ways in which social games - games played with others through social network sites such as Facebook - are situated within the everyday. It argues that social games are more than just games; they perform a range of interactive and integrative functions across and within people's lives and therefore need to be investigated as such. Social games en-able spaces for and practices of creative expression, and identity management. They also form a mechanism through which relations can be enacted and maintained across and outside of the game environment. This argument requires the researcher to consider the panoply of ways in which people integrate social games within their lives and everyday practices. Part of a larger project, this paper explores some findings from an exploratory survey of Australian game play-ers about their management and integration of game play within the everyday with a particular focus on gender.
Theme-Based Intergrative Approach : A Sketch

The Theme-Based Integrative Approach is proposed here as a model for integrating the more successful aspects of the most widely used approaches, along with thematic instruction, in order to provide learners with an holistic and compelling interdisciplinary experience. The standard approaches for teaching English as second, or foreign language, and their relevance in the classroom, specifically in relation to the Republic of South Korea are worth reviewing and isolating to get a feel for what might provide learners with a more well-rounded education in English. There is no single theory of language learning or acquisition that responds to the diversity of learner needs or addresses the variations in learning styles.

It will also outline possible solutions to some of the problems.

<P>Directional antennas can divide the transmission range into several sectors. Thus, through switching off sectors in unnecessary directions in wireless networks, we can save bandwidth and energy consumption. In this paper, we will study a directional virtual backbone (VB) in the network where directional antennas are used. When constructing a VB, we will take routing and broadcasting into account since they are two common operations in wireless networks. Hence, we will study a VB with guaranteed routing costs, named α Minimum rOuting Cost Directional VB (α-MOC-DVB). Besides the properties of regular VBs, α-MOC-DVB also has a special constraint - for any pair of nodes, there exists at least one path all intermediate directions on which must belong to α-MOC-DVB and the number of intermediate directions on the path is smaller than α times that on the shortest path. We prove that construction of a minimum α-MOC-DVB is an NP-hard problem in a general directed graph. A heuristic algorithm is proposed and theoretical analysis is also discussed in the paper. Extensive simulations demonstrate that our α-MOC-DVB is much more efficient in the sense of VB size and routing costs compared to other VBs.</P>

N-(Isopropyloxycarbonyloxy)maleimide (iPOCMI) has been synthesized and polymerized to give both the homopolymer and copolymers with substituted styrenes. These polymers were readily deprotected by thermolysis of the isopropyloxycarbonyl (iPOC) groups to provide the corresponding N-hydroxymaleimide (HOMI) polymers. The homopolymer and styrenic copolymers of iPOCMI were radically obtained in higher conversion and higher molecular weight than those obtained by direct polymerizations of N-hydroxymaleimide. The homopolymer of iPOCMI was transformed into poly(N-hydroxymaleimide)P(HOMI) by thermolysis of iPOC groups at 205 $^{\circ}C$ with concurrent release of propene and carbon dioxide. The copolymer of iPOCMI and styrene was thermally deprotected to the copolymer of HOMI and styrene at 235 $^{\circ}C.$ The mass loss was 28% and the Tg of the resulting copolymer was 250 $^{\circ}C.$ The thermal deprotection readily provided the desired, polar HOMI polymers which have Tgs above 240 $^{\circ}C.$ The deprotection was accompanied by large changes in aqueous base solubility.

In this study, we examined the relationships among years of teaching experience, professional rank, number of courses taken, and knowledge of algebra for teaching (KAT). 338in-service and 376 pre-service secondary mathematics teachers in China completed a KAT questionnaire. Various statistical techniques were employed to examine these relationships. The pre-service participantsteachers performed statistically significantly higher in advanced mathematics knowledge than in-service counterparts. For the in-service teachers, senior teachers had more strong knowledge in school mathematics and teaching mathematics, compared with junior teachers. Yetparticipants’ advanced mathematics knowledge decreased as their professional rank advanced or their teaching experience increased. The number of courses taken is significantly correlated with school mathematics knowledge and advanced mathematics knowledge, but not with teaching mathematics knowledge. The implications of these findings for mathematics teacher education are discussed.

<P>This study is based on a latent ruthenium catalyst that includes a Schiff base moiety. This catalyst was formulated with a photoacid generator and a ring‐opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) active monomer such as cyclooctadiene or dicyclopentadiene. Exposure of this mixture to ultraviolet light generates acid that protonates the Schiff base and thereby renders the latent catalyst active, leading to ROMP of the monomer. A resist system based on new photoinitiated ROMP chemistry has been developed. This type of formulation has been used to produce high‐resolution replicas of a transparent mold by imprint lithography.</P>
