        The synthesis of zirconium and tetraethylenepentamine bi-functionalized TiO₂ for efficient CO₂ adsorption

        In the present work, zirconium-doped metal oxide of TiO₂(ZrN) was synthesized and functionalized with different amount of tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA). The physical properties of the materials were tested using temperature-programmed desorption of NH₃, X-ray diffractometer, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, energy dispersion spectrum, Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, Infrared spectrometer, N₂ adsorption-desorption analyzer, energy dispersion spectrum and thermogravimetric analyzer. Zr species has a positive effect on the enhancement of the thermal stability and amine utilization. After the introduction of Zr, the decomposition temperature of TEPA is improved to 180℃. Over TEPA decorated adsorbents, physical adsorption and chemical adsorption occurs simultaneously. When the adsorption time is 75℃, CO₂ flow rate is 20 mL/min, the adsorbent of TEPA(40)/TiO₂(Zr0.1) exhibit a remarkable amine utilization of 83.5%.

        Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Thin-Multilayer Ti/Al Laminates Prepared by One-Step Explosive Bonding

        <P>Thin-multilayer Ti/Al laminates were prepared by one-step explosive bonding method to investigate the interface bonding and mechanical properties owing to their potential application in aerospace and auto industry. It was found that Ti/Al laminates prepared at the detonation velocity of 2100 m/s exhibited superior surface quality without any defects in comparison with other detonation velocities owing to the optimum explosive pressure and impact velocity. The interface morphologies and element distribution of Ti/Al laminates prepared at the detonation velocity of 2100 m/s were characterized by means of SEM and EDS. The results indicated that the linear and wavy bonding interface coexisted and element diffusion occurred in the interfacial zone. Furthermore, thin-multilayer Ti/Al laminates possessed high microhardness, excellent interlaminar shear and tensile properties.</P>

        Effect of Genotype on Whole-body and Intestinal Metabolic Response to Monensin in Mice

        Two lines of mice, M16 selected for rapid growth and a randomly selected control ICR as well as their reciprocal crosses were used to study the effects of genotype on whole-body energetics and intestinal responses to monensin. Six mice, eight weeks of age, from each line or reciprocal cross were assigned to one of two treatments, 1) drinking water containing 20 mmol/L monensin dissolved in 0.5% V/V ethanol, and 2) drinking water containing 0.5% V/V ethanol (control) for two weeks. After 11 days (age of 9 weeks and 4 days), whole-body $O_2$ consumption was measured. At the end of two weeks, jejunal $O_2$ consumption, intestinal tissue composition and histomorphometrics as well as the rate and efficiency of glucose absorption were estimated. In comparison with the control, monensin administration in drinking water resulted in less daily water intake (13.4 vs. 15.5 ml/mouse, p<0.01), less protein to DNA ratio of jejunal mucosa (5.41 vs. 6.01 mg/mg, p<0.05), lower villus width (88 vs. $100{\mu}m$, p<0.05), and less jejunal tissue $O_2$ consumption enhancement by alcohol (7.2 vs. 10.5%, p<0.01) in mice. Other than those changes, monensin had little (p>0.05) effect on variables measured in either line of mice or their reciprocal cross. In contrast, the M16 line, selected for rapid growth, as compared to the ICR controls or the reciprocal crosses, had less initial (pre-monensin treatment) whole-body $O_2$ consumption per gram of body weight (1.68 vs. $2.11-2.34{\mu}mol/min{\cdot}g$ BW, p<0.01) as compared to the ICR and reciprocal crosses. In addition, the M16 mice exhibited greater growth (412 vs. 137-210 mg/d, p<0.05), better feed efficiency (41.7 vs. 19.9-29.3 mg gain/g feed, p<0.05), shorter small intestines adjusted for fasted body weight (1.00 vs. 1.22-1.44 cm/g FBW, p<0.05), wider villi (109 vs. $87-93{\mu}m$, p<0.05), more mature height of enterocytes (28.8 vs. $24.4-25.1{\mu}m$, p<0.05) and a lower rate (91 vs. $133-145{\eta}mol\;glucose/min{\cdot}g$ jejunum, p<0.05) and less energetic efficiency (95 vs. $59-72{\eta}mol$ ATP expended/${\eta}mol$ glucose uptake, p<0.05) of glucose absorption compared to the ICR line and the reciprocal cross. Monensin had little (p>0.05) effect on whole-body $O_2$ consumption and jejunal function, whilst selection for rapid growth resulted in an apparent down-regulation of intestinal function. These data suggest that genetic selection for increased growth does not result in concomitant changes in intestinal function. This asynchrony in the selection for production traits and intestinal function may hinder full phenotypic expression of genotypic growth potential.

        Failure of a Ti‑Based Metallic Glass Matrix Composite Upon High‑Temperature Annealing

        The preparation of metallic glass matrix composites (MGMCs) requires rapid cooling rate under vacuum conditions, andthe amorphous matrix is sensitive to high temperature. For the reasons given above, the process of traditional annealing israrely chosen for MGMCs. In this work, the influence of high-temperature (i.e. higher than the glass transition temperature)annealing on Ti48Zr18V12Cu5Be17MGMC was investigated. After high-temperature annealing, breakaway corrosionphenomenon induced by the oxidation matrix have been described. Different deformation mechanisms of the as-cast andannealed specimens upon compressive loading have been probed in the present work. And the microporous microstructure,which stems from oxidation and crystallization of the glass matrix, shows a failure characteristic of MGMCs after hightemperatureannealing.

      • Coronary Atherosclerosis T<sub>1</sub>-Weighed Characterization With Integrated Anatomical Reference

        Objectives: The aim of this work is the development of coronary atherosclerosis T<SUB>1</SUB>-weighted characterization with integrated anatomical reference (CATCH) technique and the validation by comparison with high-risk plaque features (HRPF) observed on intracoronary optical coherence tomography (OCT) and invasive coronary angiography. Background: T<SUB>1</SUB>-weighted cardiac magnetic resonance with or without contrast media has been used for characterizing coronary atherosclerosis showing promising prognostic value. Several limitations include: 1) coverage is limited to proximal coronary segments; 2) spatial resolution is low and often anisotropic; and 3) a separate magnetic resonance angiography acquisition is needed to localize lesions. Methods: CATCH acquired dark-blood T<SUB>1</SUB>-weighted images and bright-blood anatomical reference images in an interleaved fashion. Retrospective motion correction with 100% respiratory gating efficiency was achieved. Reference control subjects (n = 13) completed both pre- and post-contrast scans. Stable angina patients (n = 30) completed pre-contrast scans, among whom 26 eligible patients also completed post-contrast scans. After cardiac magnetic resonance, eligible patients (n = 22) underwent invasive coronary angiography and OCT for the interrogation of coronary atherosclerosis. OCT images were assessed and scored for HRPF (lipid-richness, macrophages, cholesterol crystals, and microvessels) by 2 experienced analysts blinded to magnetic resonance results. Results: Per-subject analysis showed none of the 13 reference control subjects had coronary hyperintensive plaques (CHIP) in either pre-contrast or post-contrast CATCH. Five patients had CHIP on pre-contrast CATCH and 5 patients had CHIP on post-contrast CATCH. Patients with CHIP had greater lipid abnormality than those without. Per-segment analysis showed elevated pre- and post-contrast plaque to myocardium signal ratio in the lesions with HRPF versus those without. Positive correlation was observed between plaque to myocardium signal ratio and OCT HRPF scoring. CHIP on pre-contrast CATCH were associated with significantly higher stenosis level than non-CHIP on invasive coronary angiography. Conclusions: CATCH provided accelerated whole heart coronary plaque characterization with simultaneously acquired anatomical reference. CHIP detected by CATCH showed positive association with high-risk plaque features on invasive imaging studies.

      • Enhanced strength and ductility in particulate-reinforced aluminum matrix composites fabricated by flake powder metallurgy

        Reinforcement agglomeration always leads to severe stress concentration and porosity, which is detrimental to the deformation ability and mechanical properties of particulate-reinforced metal matrix composites. In this study, uniform distribution of 32vol%B<SUB>4</SUB>C has been achieved in B<SUB>4</SUB>C/Al composite by means of flake powder metallurgy (Flake PM), in which flake Al powder is used as the starting material. The flake Al powder exhibits higher apparent volume than spherical powders of the same mass, and thus can provide more space to accommodate the B<SUB>4</SUB>C particles. Therefore, compared with conventional PM, Flake PM can lead to more uniform distribution of B<SUB>4</SUB>C particles in the composite powder as well as in the consolidated composite. Meanwhile, the flake Al powder has a nano skin of Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>, which could be fractured and dispersed inside the fine matrix grains during consolidation, and were found to induce a higher normalized strain hardening rate for the composite during deformation. As a result, the Flake PM 32vol%B<SUB>4</SUB>C/Al composite exhibits an ultimate tensile strength of 305MPa and a uniform elongation of 6.6%, 63% stronger and 13% more ductile than its counterpart fabricated by conventional PM.

      • Ordered Arrays of Dual-Diameter Nanopillars for Maximized Optical Absorption

        <P>Optical properties of highly ordered Ge nanopillar arrays are tuned through shape and geometry control to achieve the optimal absorption efficiency. Increasing the Ge materials filling ratio is shown to increase the reflectance while simultaneously decreasing the transmittance, with the absorbance showing a strong diameter dependency. To enhance the broad band optical absorption efficiency, a novel dual-diameter nanopillar structure is presented, with a small diameter tip for minimal reflectance and a large diameter base for maximal effective absorption coefficient. The enabled single-crystalline absorber material with a thickness of only 2 μm exhibits an impressive absorbance of ∼99% over wavelengths, λ = 300−900 nm.       • Filarasis in Kinmen (Quemoy) Islands, Republic of China : IV. Susceptiblility of Culex p. fatigans, Armigeres subalbatus, Aedes albopictus and Cules tritaniorhynchus in experimental Infection with Wuchereria bancrofti in the Autumn and Winter Seasons on Kinmen(Quemoy) Islands

        1973年 秋季 및 冬季에 中華民國 臺灣省 金門島에 있어 반크�唇�韋綾昰�實驗的 感染에 對한 Culex p. fatigans, Armigeres subalbatus, Aedes albopictus 및 Culex tritaeniorhynchus 等 4種 모기의 感受性에 關한 硏究를 實施하였던 바 다음과 같은 結果를 얻었다. 1. 秋季 實驗에 있어 41例의 A. subalbatus中 13例와 35例의 A. albopictus中 21例에서 脫?microfilaria (mf)가 檢出되었으나 時日 經過에도 不拘하고 전혀 發育成長함을 볼 수 없었다. 그리고 56例의 Culex p. fatigans 中 20例와 58例의 對照群中 24例에 있어 脫? mf 및 I, II, III期 絲狀蟲幼蟲(filarial larva)이 檢出되어 感染率 37.5% 및 41.4%로 各各 나타났다. 모기 種別 感染濃度는 3種 大部分의 모기에 있어 "very light"의 狀態를 보였으나 Culex p. fatigans 5例가 "heavy"를 나타내었다. 2. 冬季 實驗에 있어서의 67例의 生存 및 23例의 死亡 Culex tritaeniorhynchus에서 絲狀蟲幼蟲이 檢出되었으며, 이들 中 11例에서 脫? mf가, 그리고 35例에서 絲狀蟲幼蟲이 發見되어 感染率 38.9%를 나타내었다. 46例에서 總 414마리의 絲狀蟲幼蟲이 檢出된 바 實驗群 모기 한 마리當 平均 9.0이었으나 成熱幼蟲은 전혀 檢出되지 않았다. 3. 冬季에 있어 94例의 Culex p. fatigans 中 14例에서 脫? mf가, 그리고 75例에서 未成熱 및 成熱幼蟲이 檢出되어 感染率 80%를 나타내었다. 89例의 實驗群에서 2,561마리의 脫? mf와 幼蟲이 檢出되어 모기 한 마리當 29.0이었으며 成熱(III期)幼蟲은 各 部位에 廣範圍하게 分布되었음을 觀察할 수 있었다. 以上의 結果로 보아 Armigeres subalbatus와 Aedes albopictus는 本 絲狀蟲 傳播에 아무런 關聯이 없으며 Culex tritaeniorhynchus는 크게 重要한 것은 아니라고 思料되었고 Culex p. fatigans 만이 好適傳播者로 再確認되었다.
