        What Makes Vietnamese (Not) Attend Periodic General Health Examinations? A 2016 Cross-sectional Study

        Objectives: General health examinations (GHE) have become an increasingly common measure for preventive medicine in Vietnam. However, little is known about the factors among Vietnamese people who attend or miss GHE. Budget or time constraints remain to be evaluated for better-informed policy making. This study investigates factors affecting behaviors in attending periodic GHE. The main objectives are as follows: (1) to explore empirical relationships between influencing factors and periodic GHE frequencies, and (2) to predict the probabilities of attending GHE under associated conditions. Methods: The study used a 2,068-observational dataset, obtained from a Vietnamese survey in 2016. The analysis was then performed using the methods of baseline-category logits for establishing relationships between predictor and response variables. Results: Significant relationships were found among the expenditure and time consumption, health priority and sensitivity to health data, insurance status, and frequency of GHE, with most p-values = 0.01. Conclusion: Generally, people attended the GHE when they had the resources and health priorities (72.7% probability). Expenditure and time remain key obstacles to the periodic GHE. Health priority and health data are important in improving rates for GHEs. Health insurance should play a positive role in promoting the GHE.

        Characteristics of retracted articles based on retraction data from online sources through February 2019

        Purpose: Although retractions are commonly considered to be negative, the fact remains that they play a positive role in the academic community. For instance, retractions help scientific enterprise perform its self-correcting function and provide lessons for future researchers; furthermore, they represent the fulfillment of social responsibilities, and they enable scientific communities to offer better monitoring services to keep problematic studies in check. This study aims to provide a thorough overview of the practice of retraction in scientific publishing from the first incident to the present. Methods: We built a database using SQL Server 2016 and homemade artificial intelligence tools to extract and classify data sources including RetractionWatch, official publishers’ archives, and online communities into ready-to-analyze groups and to scan them for new data. After data cleaning, a dataset of 18,603 retractions from 1,753 (when the first retracted paper was published) to February 2019, covering 127 research fields, was established. Results: Notable retraction events include the rise in retracted articles starting in 1999 and the unusual number of retractions in 2010. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Elsevier, and Springer account for nearly 60% of all retracted papers globally, with Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers contributing the most retractions, even though it is not the organization that publishes the most journals. Finally, reasons for retraction are diverse but the most common is “fake peer review”. Conclusion: This study suggests that the frequency of retraction has boomed in the past 20 years, and it underscores the importance of understanding and learning from the practice of retracting scientific articles.

      • Research on Macroeconomics Factors Influencing Seaborne Trade in Vietnam: An Autoregressive Distributed Lag Approach

        It would appear that the diversification of the methods of international transport has made global trade much easier. With the outstanding advantages of cargo volumes, shipping costs and safety of goods, sea transport always accounts for a high proportion of the export and import activities of coastal countries. Today, therefore, seaborne trade is the main method of foreign trade in Vietnam and the world. Towards solutions in the area of seaborne trade development, this study aims to find the essential macroeconomics factors influencing directly seaborne trade by applying autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) models with a case study of Vietnam. This paper finds that Vietnam’s GDP and FDI have positive impacts on Vietnam’s seaborne trade turnover in both the short run and long run. The findings here make a significant contribution to the search for practical scientific solutions to enhance Vietnam’s seaborne trade development.

      • SGTb regulates a surface localization of a guidance receptor BOC to promote neurite outgrowth

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Neuritogenesis is a critical event for neuronal differentiation and neuronal circuitry formation during neuronal development and regeneration. Our previous study revealed a critical role of a guidance receptor BOC in a neuronal differentiation and neurite outgrowth. However, regulatory mechanisms for BOC signaling pathway remain largely unexplored. In the current study, we have identified Small glutamine-rich tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR)-containing b (SGTb) as a BOC interacting protein through yeast two-hybrid screening. Like BOC, SGTb is highly expressed in brain and P19 embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells differentiated into neuronal cells. BOC and SGTb proteins co-precipitate in mouse brain and differentiated P19 EC cells. Furthermore, BOC and SGTb co-localize in neurites and especially are concentrated at the tip of neurites in various neuronal cells. SGTb depletion attenuates neuronal differentiation of P19 cells through reduction of the surface level of BOC. Additionally, SGTb depletion causes BOC localization at neurite tip, coinciding with decreased p-JNK levels critical for actin cytoskeleton remodeling. The overexpression of SGTb or BOC restores JNK activation in BOC or SGTb-depleted cells, respectively. Finally, SGTb elevates the level of surface-resident BOC in BOC-depleted cells, restoring JNK activation. Taken together, our data suggest that SGTb interacts with BOC and regulates its surface level and consequent JNK activation, thereby promoting neuronal differentiation and neurite outgrowth.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The TPR-region of SGTb is critical for the interaction with the intracellular region of BOC. </LI> <LI> SGTb-BOC was colocalized at the tip of neurites during neuronal differentiation. </LI> <LI> SGTb restores neuronal differentiation and JNK activity in BOC-depleted cells. </LI> <LI> SGTb regulates BOC's localization at the tip of neurite and JNK activation. </LI> <LI> SGTb promotes neurogenesis and neurite outgrowth through BOC-mediated JNK activation. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Pt-AlGaN/GaN HEMT-based hydrogen gas sensors with and without SiNx post-passivation

        GaN-based sensors have been widely investigated thanks to its potential in detecting the presence of hydrogen. In this study, we fabricated hydrogen gas sensors with AlGaN/GaN heterojunction and investigated how the sensing performance to be affected by SiN surface passivation. The gas sensor employed a high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) with 30 nm platinum catalyst as a gate to detect the hydrogen presence. SiN layer was deposited by inductively-coupled chemical vapor deposition as post-passivation. The sensors with SiN passivation exhibited hydrogen sensing characteristics with various gas flow rates and concentrations of hydrogen in inert background gas at $200^{\circ}C$ similar to the ones without passivation. Aside from quick response time for both sensors, there are differences in sensitivity and recovery time because of the existence of the passivation layer. The results also confirmed the dependence of sensing performance on gas flow rate and gas concentration.

        Adhesion of Human Osteoblasts Cell on CrN Thin Film Deposited by Cathodic Arc Plasma Deposition

        Interaction between human osteoblast (hFOB 1.19) and CrN films was conducted in vitro. CrN films were produced by cathodic arc plasma deposition. The surface was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). CrN films, glass substrates and TiN films were cultured with human osteoblasts for 48 and 72 hours. Actin stress fiber patterns and cell adhesion of osteoblasts were found less organized and weak on CrN films compared to those on the glass substrates and the TiN films. Human osteoblasts also showed less proliferation and less distributed microtubule on CrN films compared to those on glass substrates and TiN films. Focal contact adhesion was not observed in the cells cultured on CrN films, whereas focal contact adhesion was observed well in the cells cultured on glass substrates and TiN films. As a result, the CrN film is a potential candidate as a surface coating to be used for implantable devices which requires minimal cellular adhesion.

        우리나라 옥외 무선광통신 시스템의 링크 가용성

        본 연구에서 서울, 부산, 대전의 5년치 날씨 정보를 활용하여 우리나라 옥외 무선 광통신 시스템의 링크 가용성을 이론적으로 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 기상 상태와 시계(visibility)를 이용하여 대기의 흡수와 산란이 유발하는 광전력 감쇠를 계산하였다. 또한 날씨 정보를 활용하여 신틸레이션에 의한 수신 광전력 변화를 예측하였다. 대기의 흡수 및 산란에 의한 광전력 손실과 신틸레이션에 의한 광전력 변화가 서로 무관하다는 가정 하에 수신 광전력과 수신 감도를 비교하여 링크 가용성을 도출하였다. 분석결과 10 dBm 송신기 출력과 7 cm 수광 직경을 가진 수신기를 사용한 3.5 km 시스템의 링크 가용성은 대전에서 95% 이상으로 예측되었다. 부산과 서울의 경우 대전보다 열악한 시계로 인하여 낮은 링크 가용성을 보였다. We analyze the link availability of terrestrial free-space optical (FSO) communication systems in Korea. For this purpose, we utilize several theoretical models to calculate the power losses induced by absorption and scattering in the atmospheric channel, using five-year meteorological data for three major cities in Korea (Seoul, Busan, and Daejeon). Also, we estimate the power variations at the receiver caused by scintillation in the data. Those power losses and variations are used to estimate the availability of FSO links in the three cities. The results show that link availability is estimated to be over 95% in Daejeon for a 3.5-km FSO link, when the transmitter power and receiver diameter are greater than 10 dBm and 7 cm respectively. Slightly worse link availabilities are obtained for Busan and Seoul.

        Insulin enhances neurite extension and myelination of diabetic neuropathy neurons

        Background: The authors established an in vitro model of diabetic neuropathy based on the culture system of primary neurons and Schwann cells (SCs) to mimic similar symptoms observed in in vivo models of this complication, such as impaired neurite extension and impaired myelination. The model was then utilized to investigate the effects of insulin on enhancing neurite extension and myelination of diabetic neurons. Methods: SCs and primary neurons were cultured under conditions mimicking hyperglycemia prepared by adding glucose to the basal culture medium. In a single culture, the proliferation and maturation of SCs and the neurite extension of neurons were evaluated. In a co-culture, the percentage of myelination of diabetic neurons was investigated. Insulin at different concentrations was supplemented to culture media to examine its effects on neurite extension and myelination. Results: The cells showed similar symptoms observed in in vivo models of this complication. In a single culture, hyperglycemia attenuated the proliferation and maturation of SCs, induced apoptosis, and impaired neurite extension of both sensory and motor neurons. In a co-culture of SCs and neurons, the percentage of myelinated neurites in the hyperglycemia-treated group was significantly lower than that in the control group. This impaired neurite extension and myelination was reversed by the introduction of insulin to the hyperglycemic culture media. Conclusions: Insulin may be a potential candidate for improving diabetic neuropathy. Insulin can function as a neurotrophic factor to support both neurons and SCs. Further research is needed to discover the potential of insulin in improving diabetic neuropathy.

        Kinesin-II recruits Armadillo and Dishevelled for Wingless signaling in <i>Drosophila</i>

        <P>Wingless (Wg)/Wnt signaling is fundamental in metazoan development. Armadillo (Arm)/β-catenin and Dishevelled (Dsh) are key components of Wnt signal transduction. Recent studies suggest that intracellular trafficking of Wnt signaling components is important, but underlying mechanisms are not well known. Here, we show that Klp64D, the <I>Drosophila</I> homolog of Kif3A kinesin II subunit, is required for Wg signaling by regulating Arm during wing development. Mutations in <I>klp64D</I> or RNAi cause wing notching and loss of Wg target gene expression. The wing notching phenotype by Klp64D knockdown is suppressed by activated Arm but not by Dsh, suggesting that Klp64D is required for Arm function. Furthermore, <I>klp64D</I> and <I>arm</I> mutants show synergistic genetic interaction. Consistent with this genetic interaction, Klp64D directly binds to the Arm repeat domain of Arm and can recruit Dsh in the presence of Arm. Overexpression of Klp64D mutated in the motor domain causes dominant wing notching, indicating the importance of the motor activity. Klp64D shows subcellular localization to intracellular vesicles overlapping with Arm and Dsh. In <I>klp64D</I> mutants, Arm is abnormally accumulated in vesicular structures including Golgi, suggesting that intracellular trafficking of Arm is affected. Human KIF3A can also bind β-catenin and rescue <I>klp64D</I> RNAi phenotypes. Taken together, we propose that Klp64D is essential for Wg signaling by trafficking of Arm via the formation of a conserved complex with Arm.</P>
