Vu Van Khien,Duong Minh Thang,Tran Manh Hai,Nguyen Quang Duat,Pham Hong Khanh,Dang Thuy Ha,Tran Thanh Binh,Ho Dang Quy Dung,Tran Thi Huyen Trang,Yoshio Yamaoka 거트앤리버 소화기연관학회협의회 2019 Gut and Liver Vol.13 No.5
Antibiotic resistance is the most important factor leading to the failure of eradication regimens. This review focuses on the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori primary and secondary resistance to clarithromycin, metronidazole, amoxicillin, levofloxacin, tetracycline, and multidrug in Vietnam. We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, Vietnamese National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Vietnamese Biomedical databases from January 2000 to December 2016. The search terms included the following: H. pylori infection, antibiotic (including clarithromycin, metronidazole, amoxicillin, levofloxacin, tetracycline, and multidrug) resistance in Vietnam. The data were summarized in an extraction table and analyzed manually. Finally, Excel 2007 software was used to create charts. Ten studies (three studies in English and seven in Vietnamese) were included in this review. A total of 308, 412, 523, 408, 399, and 268 H. pylori strains were included in this review to evaluate the prevalence of H. pylori primary resistance to amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, levofloxacin, tetracycline, and multidrug resistance, respectively. Overall, the primary resistance rates of amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, levofloxacin, tetracycline, and multidrug resistance were 15.0%, 34.1%, 69.4%, 27.9%, 17.9% and 48.8%, respectively. Secondary resistance rates of amoxicillin, clarithromycin, metronidazole, levofloxacin, tetracycline, and multidrug resistance were 9.5%, 74.9%, 61.5%, 45.7%, 23.5% and 62.3%, respectively. In Vietnam, primary and secondary resistance to H. pylori is increasing over time and affects the effectiveness of H. pylori eradication.

Duong Minh Cuong,Nguyen Hong Trang,Duong Bich Thuy,Vu Minh Thuy 대한감염학회 2021 Infection and Chemotherapy Vol.53 No.1
Background: Vietnam is among the few countries that were successful in the fight against the first wave of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, subsequent domestic outbreaks of COVID-19 continue to occur. To sharp the community education program to guarantee the final success in the fight against COVID-19 in Vietnam and comparable countries, we examined the levels of COVID-19 knowledge and associated predictors among university students in Vietnam. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on all students enrolling at Phenikaa University using a self-developed questionnaire consisted of 20 questions regarding COVID-19's risk factors, transmission routes, symptoms, and prevention. Results: Among 728 participants, 40.9% were male, 63.2% studied health-related majors, and 18.1% lived alone. Correct response rates ranged from 25.3% to 98.9% across 20 questions. Only 51.9% (378/728) of participants had good knowledge levels. Studying health majors (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 0.547, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.398 - 0.751, P <0.001), and living with the seniors (AOR 0.612, 95% CI 0.389 - 0.963, P = 0.034) or with friends (AOR 0.405, 95% CI 0.252 – 0.650, P <0.001) were negatively associated with a poor level of COVID-19 knowledge. Conclusion: The proportion of university students having good knowledge levels is suboptimal. It is essential to improve the quality of COVID-19 education with a more focus on not only the preventive measures, but also the disease itself. More studies are needed to improve the level of COVID-19 knowledge among those living alone or do not study healthrelated majors.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are recognized as one of the most critical elements and considered essential for the development of sustainable energy technologies, lasers, electronics, alloys, catalysts, and other applications. In order to meet the increasing demand to ensure those essential usages, the supply of REEs is however limited from the primary sources. Recovery of REEs from secondary resources, such as discarded electrical and electronic equipment, referred to as electronic waste (e-waste) is consequently crucial. Fluorescent lamps among such wastes are of special concern due to the high quantity of REEs present in them. This article discusses a potential hydrometallurgical method for recovering REEs (yttrium and europium) from fluorescent lamp waste via nitric acid leaching. The effects of leaching factors including acid concentration and temperature were examined. To assist the leaching yields of those metals, the effect of alkaline fusion was specifically examined. The kinetics of both processes, direct- and alkaline fusion-assisted leaching were investigated based on the shrinking core model. In the case of direct leaching, the metal dissolution was controlled by surface chemical reaction with apparent activation energies of 43.9 and 48.1 kJ/mol for yttrium and europium, respectively, in the temperature range 303–333 K. Pretreatment, viz., the alkaline fusion changed the subsequent leaching mechanism to diffusion control with apparent activation energies of 7.4 and 9.5 kJ/mol for the respective metal in the same temperature range. Optimization of the alkaline fusion-assisted acid leaching process was undertaken by applying response surface methodology (RSM) based on the central composite design (CCD). Under the alkaline fusion conditions such as soda/fluorescent powder mass ratio of 0.65 g/g, temperature of 1223 K and reaction time of 7200 s followed by acid leaching (nitric acid concentration – 3.5 M, temperature-323 K, pulp density – 30 g/L and leaching duration – 1200 s), the leaching efficiencies of 92.6% and 99.5% for yttrium and europium, respectively, could be achieved.

Left pulmonary artery sling (LPAS) is a rare congenital anomaly in which the left pulmonary artery (LPA) originates from the posterior aspect of the right pulmonary artery and courses between the trachea and esophagus to reach the left lung. This anomaly causes distal tracheal and/or right main stem bronchus compression. Most LPAS cases are associated with early symptom onset, around 2 month-old, and have severe respiratory distress within the first year of life. There are two major types of LPAS based on the location of LPA and abnormal bronchial branching. The diagnosis can be made by using various imaging modalities. Herein, we present the imaging characteristics on multidetector computed tomography of 5 LPAS cases with respiratory distress (2 months to 12 months).

<P>Among the members of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family that affect the growth, differentiation, migration, and survival of many cell types, FGF2 is the most abundant in the central nervous system. Because of its wound healing effects, FGF2 has potential as a therapeutic agent. The protein is also added to the culture media to maintain stem cells. Expression and purification procedures for FGF2 that are highly efficient and low cost have been intensively investigated for the past two decades. Our current study focuses on the purification of FGF2 fused with b'a' domains of human protein disulfide isomerase to elevate overexpression, solubility, and stability with a simplified experimental procedure using only ion exchange chromatography, as well as on the confirmation of the biological activity of FGF2 on fibroblast Balb/c 3T3 cells and hippocampal neural cells.</P>

Objective: To compare left ventricular (LV) function, ejection fraction (EF), end-diastolic volume (EDV), end-systolic volume (ESV), and regional wall motion analyzed in 256-slice dualsource coronary CT angiography (DSCT) with 2D transthoracic echocardiography (TTE). Materials and Methods: One hundred twelve patients suspected of coronary artery disease underwent DSCT and 2D-TTE within one week for LVEF, EDV, and ESV. The correlation between DSCT and 2D-TTE measurements was analyzed through linear regression and Bland- Altman analysis. Regional wall motion was visually scored with a 3-point scale (1, normal; 2, hypokinesia; 3, dysphagia, akinesia). Results: Average LVEF at 66.45%±1.27% (range 23%–85%) as determined on DSCT compared with 66.09%±1.01% (range 25%–84%) on 2D-TTE. LVEF exhibited a good correlation between DSCT and 2D-TTE (r=0.715; p<0.001). Good correlations between DSCT and 2D-TTE were demonstrated for LVEDV (r=0.732; p<0.001) and LVESV (r=0.841; p<0.001). Mean differences (±SD) of 1.78±24.10 mL (p<0.05) and 0.77±13.70 mL (p<0.05) were observed between DSCT and 2D-TTE for LVEDV and LVESV, respectively. LVEF was slightly overestimated with DSCT (0.52%±9.59%; p<0.05). Although the LVEF values calculated by DSCT and 2D-TTE were similar, EDV and ESV from DSCT were statistically higher than those from 2D-TTE (p<0.05). Agreement between DSCT and 2D-TTE in regional wall motion was 96.4%, κ=0.840. Conclusion: DSCT can provide comparable results to those using 2D-TTE for LV function (EF, EDV, and ESV) and regional wall motion assessment in a heterogeneous population.

<P>Extracellular superoxide dismutase (EC-SOD) is the only enzyme that removes superoxide radical in the extracellular space. The reduction of EC-SOD is linked to many diseases, suggesting that the protein may have therapeutic value. EC-SOD is reported to be insoluble and to make inclusion bodies when overexpressed in the cytoplasm of Escherichia coli. The refolding process has the advantage of high yield, but has the disadvantage of frequent aggregation or misfolding during purification. For the first time, this study shows that fusion with maltose-binding protein (MBP), N-utilization substance protein A, and protein disulfide isomerase enabled the soluble overexpression of EC-SOD in the cytoplasm of E. coli. MBP-tagged human EC-SOD (hEC-SOD) was purified by MBP affinity and anion exchange chromatography, and its identity was confirmed by MALDI-TOF MS analysis. The purified protein showed good enzyme activity in vitro; however, there was a difference in metal binding. When copper and zinc were incorporated into hEC-SOD before MBP tag cleavage, the enzymatic activity was higher than when the metal ions were bound to the purified protein after MBP tag cleavage. Therefore, the enzymatic activity of hEC-SOD is associated with metal incorporation and protein folding via disulfide bond.</P>
