Non-destructive evaluation of concrete quality using PZT transducers

        Tawie, R.,Lee, H.K.,Park, S.H. Techno-Press 2010 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.6 No.7

This paper presents a new concept of using PZT (lead zircornate titanate) transducers as a non-destructive testing (NDT) tool for evaluating quality of concrete. Detection of defects in concrete is very important in order to check the integrity of concrete structures. The electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) response of PZT transducers bonded onto a concrete specimen can be used for evaluating local condition of the specimen. Measurements are carried out by electrically exciting the bonded PZT transducers at high frequency range and taking response measurements of the transducers. In this study, the compression test results showed that concrete specimens without sufficient compaction are likely to fall below the desired strength. In addition, the strength of concrete was greatly reduced as the voids in concrete were increased. It was found that the root mean square deviation (RMSD) values yielded between the EMI signatures for concrete specimens in dry and saturated states showed good agreement with the specimens' compressive strength and permeable voids. A quality metric was introduced for predicting the quality of concrete based on the dry-saturated state of concrete specimens. The simplicity of the method and the current development towards low cost and portable impedance measuring system, offer an advantage over other NDE methods for evaluating concrete quality.

A systematic approach for the development of porous concrete based on axiomatic design theory

        Tran, X.H.,Tawie, R.,Lee, H.K. 테크노프레스 2009 COMPUTERS AND CONCRETE Vol.6 No.6

This paper presents a design framework developed using axiomatic design (AD) theory that can be applied in the design process of porous concrete. The main contribution of this paper is the definition of an AD framework based on the needs and functional requirements of porous concrete. The framework shows how AD theory can be used to provide guidelines for proportioning and manufacturing porous concrete. The advantage of the AD approach is that it systemizes the way to decouple design parameters and makes designers to think rationally between what we want to achieve and how we propose to satisfy the functional requirements of porous concrete. In this paper, test results of laboratory-size porous concrete specimens under compression were analyzed to evaluate the performance of the porous concrete based on the desired functional requirements.

Phytochemical Constituents and Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activity of Selected Plants Used Traditionally as a Source of Food

Frederick Tawi Tabit,Naomi Tope Komolafe,Thilivhali Emmanuel Tshikalange,Monde Alfred Nyila 한국식품영양과학회 2016 Journal of medicinal food Vol.19 No.3

Many indigenous plants have also been used as a source of food and medicine in many African rural communities in the past. The study investigated the antimicrobial activity, phytochemical constituent, and antioxidant activity of selected traditional plants used traditionally as a source of food and medicine. The methanol and water extracts of different plant parts were analyzed for phytochemicals using standard phytochemical screening reagents while the broth microdilution assays were used to analyze antimicrobial activities. Alkaloids, phenols, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and terpenes were found in one or more of the plant extracts, and all the plant extracts demonstrated scavenging activities. The back extracts of Sclerocarya birrea and the leaf extracts of Garcinia livingstonei exhibit the best antioxidant activities, while the water and methanol back extracts of S. birrea and G. livingstonei were the most active against all the tested foodborne bacteria.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF AN ELECTRO-MECHANICAL CVT RATIO CONTROLLER

        B. SUPRIYO,K. B. TAWI,H. JAMALUDDIN 한국자동차공학회 2013 International journal of automotive technology Vol.14 No.2

This paper introduces an electro-mechanical, dual acting pulley, continuously variable transmission (EMDAPCVT)and presents its real time ratio controller using a proportional-derivative-plus-conditional-integral (PDPCI) controller. The ratio controller system is developed based on primary (input) and secondary (output) pulley position controllers. Each position controller has two PID parameters, releasing and clamping, which are determined experimentally using a relay feedback method. A PC-based ratio controller system is implemented using Matlab/Simulink® software and a Keithley DAS-1602 data acquisition system card. The experimental results show that the PDPCI controller system can control the CVT ratio adequately.
