Characterization of Polyester Cloth as an Alternative Separator to Nafion Membrane in Microbial Fuel Cells for Bioelectricity Generation Using Swine Wastewater

Polyester cloth (PC) was selected as a prospective inexpensive substitute separator material for microbial fuel cells (MFCs). PC was compared with a traditional Nafion proton exchange membrane (PEM) as an MFC separator by analyzing its physical and electrochemical properties. A single layer of PC showed higher mass transfer (e.g., for O₂/H⁺/ions) than the Nafion PEM; in the case of oxygen mass transfer coefficient (ko), a rate of 50.0 × 10^-5 cm·s^-1 was observed compared with a rate of 20.8 × 10^-5 cm/s in the Nafion PEM. Increased numbers of PC layers were found to reduce the oxygen mass transfer coefficient. In addition, the diffusion coefficient of oxygen (D_O) for PC (2.0-3.3 × 10^-6 cm²/s) was lower than that of the Nafion PEM (3.8 × 10^-6 cm²/s). The PC was found to have a low ohmic resistance (0.29-0.38 Ω) in the MFC, which was similar to that of Nafion PEM (0.31 Ω); this resulted in comparable maximum power density and maximum current density in MFCs with PC and those with Nafion PEMs. Moreover, a higher average current generation was observed in MFCs with PC (104.3 ± 15.3 A/m³) compared with MFCs with Nafion PEM (100.4 ± 17.7 A/m³), as well as showing insignificant degradation of the PC surface, during 177 days of use in swine wastewater. These results suggest that PC separators could serve as a low-cost alternative to Nafion PEMs for construction of cost-effective MFCs.

Beyond the numbers: The effect of 10-K tone on firms’ performance predictions using text analytics

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Investors use annual reports that companies mandatorily disclose every fiscal year-end when they make important investment-related decisions. The Securities and Exchange Commission in the United States has implemented and monitors the “Plain-English Rule” to create a transparent and readable annual report. However, only a general guideline exists for the description of annual reports (Plain English Rule), and there are no specific regulations on volume and format. As such, it is risky to interpret business managers’ positive expressions because the data can include business managers’ subjective opinions and viewpoints from the companies’ perspectives. Additionally, the business managers’ unrevealed tendencies, such as strategic reporting or cognitive bias, remain unknown. Therefore, this study focuses on the narrative sections of the annual reports that companies need to disclose after every fiscal year-end and uses text mining to determine the relationship between the assessment information of companies created by business managers and the performance of companies. The methodology of this study is grounded in text-mining. To analyze these relationships, we collected all the 10-Ks of all public firms in the United States and employed the text-mining method to identify the tones of these 10-K narratives to determine whether they changed in line with current earnings levels. Individuals gather information online to resolve problems in their daily lives and make various decisions about the purchase of products or services. With the revolutionary development of information technology, Web 2.0 has allowed more people to easily generate and use online reviews such that the volume of information is rapidly increasing, and the usefulness and significance of analyzing the unstructured data have also increased. This paper presents an analysis on the lexical features of expert product reviews to determine their influence on consumers’ purchasing decisions. The focus was on how unstructured data can be organized and used in diverse contexts through text mining. In addition, diverse lexical features of expert reviews of contents provided by a third-party review site were extracted and defined. Expert reviews are defined as evaluations by people who have expert knowledge about specific products or services in newspapers or magazines; this type of review is also called a critic review. Consumers who purchased products before the widespread use of the Internet were able to access expert reviews through newspapers or magazines; thus, they were not able to access many of them. Recently, however, major media also now provide online services so that people can more easily and affordably access expert reviews compared to the past. The reason why diverse reviews from experts in several fields are important is that there is an information asymmetry where some information is not shared among consumers and sellers. The information asymmetry can be resolved with information provided by third parties with expertise to consumers. Then, consumers can read expert reviews and make purchasing decisions by considering the abundant information on products or services. Therefore, expert reviews play an important role in consumers’ purchasing decisions and the performance of companies across diverse industries. If the influence of qualitative data such as reviews or assessment after the purchase of products can be separately identified from the quantitative data resources, such as the actual quality of products or price, it is possible to identify which aspects of product reviews hamper or promote product sales. Previous studies have focused on the characteristics of the experts themselves, such as the expertise and credibility of sources regarding expert reviews; however, these studies did not suggest the influence of the linguistic features of experts’ product reviews on consumers’ overall evaluation. However, this study focused on experts’ recommendations and evaluations to reveal the lexical features of expert reviews and whether such features influence consumers’ overall evaluations and purchasing decisions. Real expert product reviews were analyzed based on the suggested methodology, and five lexical features of expert reviews were ultimately determined. Specifically, the “review depth” (i.e., degree of detail of the expert’s product analysis), and “lack of assurance” (i.e., degree of confidence that the expert has in the evaluation) have statistically significant effects on consumers’ product evaluations. In contrast, the “positive polarity” (i.e., the degree of positivity of an expert’s evaluations) has an insignificant effect, while the “negative polarity” (i.e., the degree of negativity of an expert’s evaluations) has a significant negative effect on consumers’ product evaluations. Finally, the “social orientation” (i.e., the degree of how many social expressions experts include in their reviews) does not have a significant effect on consumers’ product evaluations. In summary, the lexical properties of the product reviews were defined according to each relevant factor. Then, the influence of each linguistic factor of expert reviews on the consumers’ final evaluations was tested. 실크 광도파로를 이용한 휴먼케어용 센서 소자 개발

본 논문은 생체 적합성이 뛰어나고 유연한 실크 광도파로를 이용하여 생체 내 삽입 가능한 휴먼케어용 센서 소자를 개발하였다. 생체 내외에서 진단 및 검출에 대한 중요성이 높아짐에 따라 빛을 이용한 광학 바이오 센서에 대한 연구는 많은 주목을 받고있다. 본 연구에서는 대류자가조립 기술을 사용하여 성공적으로 금 나노입자를 실크 광도파로 말단에 균일하게 증착하였다. 실크 소재의 초고감도 SERS (Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering, 표면증강라만산란)기반 센서를 통해 생체 내부로 빛이 도달하여 검출대상인 생체분자의 증폭된 라만신호를 검출할 수 있다. 제작한 실크 광도파로의 민감도 및 선형성을 확인하기 위해 4-ABT 라만 프로브 물질을 사용한 라만 신호 측정실험을 진행하였다. 본 연구에서는 대류자가조립 기술을 사용하여 감도 향상의 효과를 보이는 라만 분광기반의 새로운 실크 광도파로 휴먼케어용센서를 제안한다. 향후 생체 내 의료 모니터링을 포함한 의료플랫폼에서 다방면으로 활용 가능할 것으로 기대한다.

기존 소프트웨어의 재활용을 위해 시도되고있는 대부분의 프로그램 변환기의 문제점으로 지적되는 것은 언어간의 완전한 변환이 불가능하다는 것과 변환된 코드의 부정확성, 또한 결과 코드의 비구조화로 인한 판독성이 떨어진다는 것으로 요약될 수 있다. 이는 기본적으로 언어간의 구조적인 차이 때문에 발생하는 문제이다. 언어 간의 번역 방식을 이용한 언어 변환기는 언어의 구문 형식과 문법, 예약어의 차이로 구분들 사이의 정확한 대응이 어렵다. 따라서 이러한 구조적인 차이를 극복하기 위하여 원시 언어를 목적 언어로 직접 변환하는 방식 대신 원시 언어로부터 자료 구조와 제어의 흐름을 분석하여 필요한 정보를 추출한 후 이를 보다 판독성이 향상된 중간 단계의 추상화된 언어로 표현하고 다시 원하는 목적 언어로 변환하는 과정을 제안하고자 한다.

RuO_2계 캐패시터 전극의 제작 및 그 특성에 관한 연구

Recently RuO_2·xH_2O is one of the best candidates for use as a pseudocapacitance material, but ruthenium is a very expensive material compared to activated carbon. In this work, we prepared active material by sol-gel method. Ruthenium oxide was loaded into activated carbon by impregnating the activated carbon in an aqueous RuCl3 solution followed by neutralization. The fabricated electrode capacities were examined by measurements of cyclic voltammograms. The electrochemical behavior of activated carbon loaded with a small quantity of ruthenium oxide to increase its capacitance were identified. As a result, the maximum capacity obtained in this study was 285F/g for MSC-30 and 280 F/g for BP-20 loaded with 15 wt% ruthenium. And it was found that the capacitance of activated carbon increased by loading it with RuO_2 despite of a decrease in surface area.

<P><B>Summary</B></P><P>The use of next‐generation sequencers and advanced genotyping technologies has propelled the field of plant genomics in model crops and plants and enhanced the discovery of hidden bridges between genotypes and phenotypes. The newly generated reference sequences of unstudied minor plants can be annotated by the knowledge of model plants via translational genomics approaches. Here, we reviewed the strategies of translational genomics and suggested perspectives on the current databases of genomic resources and the database structures of translated information on the new genome. As a draft picture of phenotypic annotation, translational genomics on newly sequenced plants will provide valuable assistance for breeders and researchers who are interested in genetic studies.</P>
