This study was conducted to find pork quality to meet the needs of consumers. Thus, the meat quality and fatty acid composition of longissimus muscles from purebred pigs (Landrace, Yorkshire, and Duroc) and three-way crossbred LYD pigs were compared and evaluated. Chemical compositions of longissimus muscles were significant (p<0.05) different among pigs. Duroc contained significant (p<0.05) higher fat contents than other pigs, whereas significant (p<0.05) higher moisture contents were observed in Landrace, Yorkshire, and LYD pigs compared to those of Duroc pigs. The values of pH<sub>24 h</sub> and pH<sub>14 d</sub> were the highest in Landrace pigs. Myoglobin contents of LYD pigs were higher (p<0.05) than those of purebred pigs. Regarding meat color, Duroc and Yorkshire pigs had higher redness values than Landrace and LYD pigs, while Landrace pigs had the lowest (p<0.05) color values among all pigs. There was no significant difference in shear force or water holding capacity (WHC). Duroc pigs maintained the lowest drip loss during 14 d of cold storage. In sensory evaluation, the marbling scores of Duroc pigs were higher (p<0.05) than other pigs. Regarding fatty acid compositions, total USFA, poly-, n-3, and n-6 contents were the highest (p<0.05) in LYD pigs, while total SFA contents were the highest (p<0.05) in Duroc pigs. Based on these results, purebred pigs had superior overall meat quality to crossbred pigs.
Role of neutrophils in persistent airway obstruction due to refractory asthma

<P><B>ABSTRACT</B></P><P><B>Background and objective: </B> One of the clinical manifestations of refractory asthma (RA) in a certain group of patients is persistent airway obstruction (PAO), despite treatment with high doses of inhaled and/or systemic corticosteroids. Airway neutrophilic inflammation is frequently observed in RA; however, the relationship between neutrophilic inflammation and PAO has not been evaluated in this group of patients. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical parameters and patterns of inflammatory cells between patients with or without PAO due to RA, and to identify the factors associated with PAO.</P><P><B>Methods: </B> Seventy‐seven patients with RA were recruited from a cohort of 2298 asthmatic patients. Sputum differential cell counts were performed at initial presentation. Clinical and physiological parameters were compared between patients with (<I>n</I> = 19) or without PAO (<I>n</I> = 58).</P><P><B>Results: </B> The group with PAO had a longer duration of asthma and a higher frequency of near‐fatal asthma than the non‐PAO group, although higher doses of inhaled corticosteroids were used in the PAO group (<I>P</I> = 0.037). Neutrophilic inflammation was predominant in the group with PAO, whereas eosinophilic inflammation was predominant in the non‐PAO group (<I>P</I> = 0.003). When both groups were stratified according to smoking status, the non‐smoking PAO group had the longest duration of asthma, with early onset of asthma (<I>P</I> < 0.05). The non‐smoking PAO group tended to have the highest percentage of sputum neutrophils. Irrespective of smoking status, the percentage of sputum eosinophils was significantly higher in the non‐PAO group than in the PAO group.</P><P><B>Conclusions: </B> Patients with PAO due to RA show different clinical manifestations when compared with those without PAO and have neutrophil‐dominant airway inflammation.</P>

The copolymer, Sty-HEA-LMA, was synthesized by solution polymerization based on styrene (Sty), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), and lauryl methacrylate (LMA). The synthesized copolymer was crosslinked with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) and glutar aldehyde (GA) via esterification. The sulfonation reaction was performed to introduce sulfonic groups into the membrane with sulfuric acid as the sulfonating agent. The chemical structures of the membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ($^1H$ NMR), respectively. The basic membrane properties, such as the water uptake, ion exchange capacity (IEC), ion transport number and electrical properties, were measured for the prepared ion exchange membranes. The IEC value and electrical conductivity increased with increasing sulfonation time due to the ionic group ($-SO_3H$), and were in the range of 0.31-1.15 meq/g and $0.5{\times}10^{-4}-0.1S/cm$, respectively.

<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>A new rabies vaccine for animals, including raccoon dogs, in Korea is needed to eradicate rabies infection. In this study, we constructed two recombinant adenoviruses expressing the glycoprotein or nucleoprotein of the rabies virus (RABV). We then investigated the safety and immunogenicity of these strains in raccoon dogs, depending on inoculation route.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>Recombinant adenoviruses expressing the glycoprotein (Ad-0910G) or nucleoprotein (Ad-0910N) of rabies were constructed in 293A cells using an adenoviral system. One-year-old raccoon dogs underwent intramuscular (IM) inoculation or oral administration of the recombinant Ad-0910G and Ad-0910N. Clinical symptoms were observed and virus-neutralizing antibodies (VNA) against RABV were measured at 0, 2, 4, and 6 weeks after the immunization. Raccoons were considered positive if VNA titers were ≥ 0.1 IU/mL.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Raccoon dogs inoculated with the combined Ad-0910G and Ad-0910N virus via the IM route did not exhibit any clinical sign of rabies during the observation period. All raccoon dogs (n = 7) immunized IM had high VNA titers, ranging from 0.17 to 41.6 IU/mL at 2 weeks after inoculation, but 70% (7/10) of raccoon dogs administered viruses via the oral route responded by 6 weeks after administration against RABV.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Raccoon dogs inoculated with Ad-0910G and Ad-0910N viruses showed no adverse effects. Immunization with the combined Ad-0910G and Ad-0910N strains may play an important role in inducing VNA against RABV in raccoon dogs.</P>

Previous studies have shown that transforming growth factor beta ($TGF-{\beta}$) is a potent regulator of cell growth and differentiation. To study the effects of $TGF-{\beta}$ on cell morphology and cytoskeleton reorganization, we conducted a survey using Mv1Lu mink lung epithelial cells with antibodies to cytoskeletal proteins and an extracellular matrix protein. While the untreated cells showed a cuboidal shape of typical epithelia, the Mv1Lu cells displayed a drastic shape change in the presence of $TGF-{\beta}$. This alteration was most prominent when near-confluent cells were treated with $TGF-{\beta}$. Since the morphology alteration is known to be accompanied by the reorganization of cytoskeletal proteins in other cell types, we investigated the intracellular distribution of the three major cytoskeletal structures: microfilaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments. In the microfilament system, $TGF-{\beta}$ induced new stress fiber formation, which was caused primarily by the polymerization of cytoplasmic G-actin. However, $TGF-{\beta}$ appeared not to induce any significant changes in microtubular structures and vimentin filaments as determined by indirect fluorescence microscopy. Finally we confirmed the rapid accumulation of fibronectin by immunoblot analysis and chased the protein locations by immunofluorescence microscopy.
Fabrication of PIN Photo-Diode from Si0.2Ge0.8/Si strained MQWs

A pin photo-diode was fabricated from the Si0.2Ge0.8/Si strained multiple quantum-well (MQW) structure grown by using ultra high vacuum chemical vapor deposition (UHV-CVD). The structural properties of the Si0.2Ge0.8/Si strained MQW were investigated using high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD). Specifically, the recent advances in the dry etching of Si0.2Ge0.8/Si strained MQW have been used to define pin photo-diode active layer mesas. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of pin photodiodes fabricated from these MQWs was measured. Also, the spectral response spectrum of pin photodiodes was measured at room temperature.
The State of Patient Satisfaction after Hernioplasty on an Ambulatory Basis

Purpose: There have been no studies employing a specific questionnaire relating to patient satisfaction following ambulatory hernioplasty. Via the production of a novel specific questionnaire, attempts were made to determine the factors associated with patient satisfaction following hernioplasty on an ambulatory basis. Methods: Patient satisfaction was evaluated via cross-sectional telephone surveys administered 10.5 (range of 2∼23) months after their operations, consisting of six questions, regarding; anesthetic technique, surgical method, necessity for admission, necessity for follow-up, intraoperative pain, and postoperative pain. Each of the questions was then scored using a 4-point scoring system, with global satisfaction determined via the addition of each score. Factors related to global satisfaction were determined among preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative factors. Results: Telephone questionnaire interviews were conducted on all 131 consecutive patients. Four respondents (3.1%) expressed dissatisfaction with the ambulatory surgery. Twelve (9.2%) had been admitted overnight after the operation. Thirteen (9.9%) required analgesics for over 3 days. No patients required a re-operation, although 20 (15.3%) experienced minor postoperative complications. Significant factors for global dissatisfaction were analgesic requirement for over 3 days and the presence of surgical complication (P value <0.05). Time until return to work and required overnight admission were important factors for patient satisfaction, but these were not significant. Conclusion: Patient satisfaction was associated with postoperative pain and surgical complications. Therefore, a more appropriate method for pain control and prevention of minor surgical complication are suggested might serve to enhance patient satisfaction after hernioplasty on an ambulatory basis.
