Variable-channel Threshold-based Hybrid AF-DF Cooperative Communications with Packet Splitting

Cooperative communications has been widely researched as an attractive way to improve wireless communications systems with a small number of antennas and low power consumption. However, forward processing in the relay terminals means consuming the power of relays in other terminals. Therefore, the waste of electricity from forwarding is to be reduced as much as possible. In this paper, we propose and analyze a new relay system for three-node, hybrid, cooperative communications systems, where the relay terminal may choose to transmit messages using amplifyand-forward (AF) with expansion of the channel matrix or using decode-and-forward (DF) with packet-splitting transmission. This is based on the qualities of the channels in the source–relay and source–destination links. Then, in the proposed system, the decision on the forwarding scheme is made in order to calculate a threshold based on the equation of the channel capacity. From the simulation results, the proposed system can improve the bit error rate and reduce the load from forward processing latency at the relay.
Complete Resolution of a Case of Calcific Tendinitis of the Longus Colli with Conservative Treatment

Acute calcific tendinitis of the longuscolli is a self-limiting inflammatory condition caused by calcium hydroxyapatite deposition in the longuscolli tendon. Although several case reports have described its radiological presentation, few reports provide detailed chronological accounts through symptomatic and radiologic resolution. A 59-year-old woman presented with severe neck pain and stiffness of a few days duration as well as moderate discomfort when swallowing. Lateral radiographs revealed a large calcium deposit anterior to the C1–C2 joint and swelling of the prevertebral soft tissue from C1 to C5. CT and magnetic resonance imaging showed fluid in the retropharyngeal gap.A soft collar and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug were prescribed, without antibiotics. At 4 months after presentation, the calcium deposit and all symptoms had resolved completely. Although this disease is comparatively rare, physicians should keep it in mind when a patient presents with acute severe neck pain.
The C:N:P ratio of plankton and its significance for nutrient cycling in Lakes.

In the main (north) basin of Lake Biwa, an oli해-meso-trophic and phosphorus-limited lake in central Japan, and abundant accumulation of nitrate in the hypolimnion was observed during the stagnation period, in contrast with no such accumulation of phosphate. In order to clarify the mechanism of this phenomenon, seston was collected in summer from both epilimnion and hypolimnion of Lake Biwa and decomposed aerobically for three months in the laboratory. A large amount of nitrate but not phosphate was released from decomposing seston. The reason for this different release pattern of nitrate and phosphate was attributed to the high C:P and N:P ratios of the plankton grown in severely phosphorus-limited environment of Lake Biwa. Thus, it was concluded that the C:N:P ratio of plankton plays an important role in the recycling of nitrogen and phosphorus in lakes.
SYSTEMATIC RISK AND COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT IN THE JAPANESE SHIPPING INDUSTRY

This study addresses the issue of how the competitive environment, particularly the introduction of competitive policies such as the Shipping Act of 1984 and the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998 in the US, affects the Japanese liner shipping industry. In order to evaluate the competitive environment and the market performance after the introduction of such competitive policies, we examine the risk structure of the Japanese shipping industry using stock price data. To analyze the risk structure, we estimate the time varying systematic risk beta of each Japanese liner shipping company and show the possibility that the introduction of competitive policies would increase beta, whereas inter-firm cooperation such as alliance would decrease it.
