Effects of Different Nitrogen Source on Arginine in Buds of Pinus radiata

P. radiata grafts were fertilized with ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate and urea to the soil in the field and arginine solution was applied to the soil or foliage of potted grafts in a glasshouse in order to increase arginine content in buds. Following results were obtained. 1. Of the nitrogen sources tested in the field urea was the most effective: its treatment significantiy increased the level of arginine in buds of some clones. 2. Ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate and sodium nitrate did not result in a consistent increase in arginine content of the bud tissue, The effect varied with the clone tested. 3. Soil-watering with an arginine solution increased several-fold the levels of arginine in the buds.

The field of nuclear medicine is entering a new era of gamma-camera technology. Solid-state SPECT/CT systems will graduallyreplace the thallium-activated sodium-iodide NaI(Tl) systems. This digital technology allows drastic improvements inimage quality, radiotracer dose reduction, and procedure efficiency. This pictorial review presents our initial experience onan NM/CT 870 CZT system (GE Healthcare), equipped with dual-head cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors, for I-123metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) imaging in pediatric neuroblastoma. On planar imaging, CZT shows greater image qualitythan at conventional gamma-camera using the Infinia Hawkeye (GE Healthcare). Physiologic structures such as salivaryglands and myocardium show sharper borders with a more notable signal-to-noise ratio at CZT than conventional gammacamera. On SPECT imaging, the CZT scanner, combined with resolution recovery, demonstrates either comparable or greaterimage quality at 80% of the conventional gamma camera’s acquisition time. Due to the 2.46-mm detector pixel with fullyregistered collimator holes matching each pixel and direct conversion of photons into electrical signals, the CZT gammacamera system provides significant advantages in photon localization and energy resolution.

Our objective of this study is to design and develop a polyethylene glycol (PEG2000)-modifed multiwall carbon nanotube (PEGylated MWCNT) formulation for oral controlled metronomic chemotherapeutic drug delivery. Multiwall carbon nano�tubes undergo various chemical modifcations including oxidation with strong acids, conjugation of polyethylene glycol, and coating with cellulose acetate phthalate which resulted in the formation of aqueous dispersion and prevention of drug degradation in acidic environment. Advanced analytical procedure such as Fourier transform infra-red, X-ray difraction, diferential scanning calorimetry, thermal gravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, and dynamic light scat�tering techniques were used to evaluate physicochemical characterization. We also performed in vitro cytotoxic study by MTT assay and results revealed that carboplatin-loaded PEGylated MWCNTs did not show signifcant detrimental efect on the viability of MDA-MB-231 (human breast cancer) cells. The maximum encapsulation and drug-loading capacity were determined to be 71.58±0.04 and 39.62±0.07%, respectively. The release of carboplatin from PEGylated MWCNTs was investigated at simulated intestinal fuid (SIF), pH 6.8, after optimizing at simulated gastric fuid (SGF), pH 1.2, by enteric coating. Enteric-coated PEGylated MWCNTs exhibit pH-responsive drug activity in a sustained manner especially at pH 6.8. This surface modifcation strongly suggests that PEGylated MWCNTs could be a potential carrier for metronomic chemotherapeutic agent for high drug resistance, drug with maximum adverse efect and poorly oral bioavailable drugs.

Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) and graph searches show that proton conduction limiting barriers and trajectories in $BaZr_{0.875}Y_{0.125}O_3$ are affected by the presence of other protons. At 1000 K, KMC limiting conduction barriers increase from 0.39 eV to 0.45 eV as the proton number is increased. The proton-proton radial distribution begins to rise at $2{\AA}$ and peaks at $4{\AA}$, which is half the distance expected, based on the proton concentration. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations find proton/proton distances of 2.60 and $2.16{\AA}$ in the lowest energy two-proton configurations. A simple average of the limiting barriers for 7-10 step periodic long range paths found via graph theory at 1100 K shows an increase in activation barrier from 0.32 eV to 0.37 eV when a proton is added. Both KMC and graph theory show that protons can affect each other's pathways and raise the overall conduction barriers.

Seasonal changes in free arginine concentration in Pinus radiata buds were studied in four clones from May, 1974 to June, 1975. The buds were from the tips of first order branches which had flowered the previous year, and the significant findings were as follows: (1) In general, arginine concentration in the buds of the four clones showed the highest peaks from December to March, a period spanning the time of flower initiation, and the lowest levels in Angust and September. (2) The timing of individual arginine peaks during the period of flower initiation matched roughly the timing of initiation of several female cone clusters, as determined from Clone 7 which characteristically initiates three cycles of female cones on its leading shoot. (3) The heavy-flowering clones showed higher arginine concentration than ther poorer flowering ones, especially at the time of flower initiation.
