We irradiated the ears of C3H mice with UVB 200mJ/㎤ and 400mJ/㎤ in a single dose at one time and 5 fractionated doses for 5 days and 10 fractionated doses for 10 days and performed biopsies on the ears of the control and experimental groups after, 2, 7, 14, 21 days of irradiation and stained them by the immunoperoxidase method. The results are summarized as follows. 1. A more significant decrease in the number of Ia-positive epidermal Langerhans cells was observed in single-dose-exposed group than fractionated-dose-exposed groups on the second day of irradiation. 2. On the seventh day of exposure, the number of the Ia-positive epidermal cells in single-dose-exposed group returned to normal, but in fractionated-dose-exposed groups the number of Langerhans cells decreased most remarkably. 3. In fractionated-dose-exposed groups, the number of Langerhans cells returned to normal on the 14th or 21st day of expposure. (Kor J Dermatol 29(4) : 459-465, 1991)

물리적 방법을 이용한 키토산 올리고당의 제조에 관한 기초 자료를 제시하기 위하여 키토산용액을 20kHz의 초음파로 처리하였으며, 초음파 처리 효과에 미치는 처리 조건의 영향을 조사하였다. 키토산 용액의 고유점도는 초음파 처리 5분까지는 급속하게 감소하였고 그 이후로는 서서히 감소하였다. 키토산 용액의 부피가 작을수록 초음파 처리효과는 컸으며, 키토산 용액의 온도는 초음파 처리에 별다른 효과가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 5분간 초음파 처리 후의 점도는 용매의 종류에 따라 큰 차이가 없었으나, acetate buffer의 경우 초음파 처리효과가 가장 컸다. pH가 높을수록 초음파 처리효과는 크게 나타났으며, 이온강도와 염의 종류에 따른 효과는 나타나지 않았다. 이상의 결과에서, 용액의 부피는 10~20ml, 온도는 20~30℃, 용액의 pH는 4.5, 그리고 용매의 종류는 acetate buffer로 하는 것이 최적 초음파 처리조건으로 추정된다. As the first step of studies related to production of chitooligosaccharides by physical methods, chitosan solution were sonicated with 20kHz and various treatment effects were examined to present fundamental data of sonicated chitosan solution. Intrinsic viscosity of chitosan solution sharply decreased from 3.76dl/g to 2.90dl/g until 5 minutes of sonication and then slowly decreased. With low volume of chitosan solution, sonication was very effective and temperature of chitosan solution slightly affected the efficiency of sonication. In case of changing the solvent, no significant differences were observed on the effect of sonication, however, acetate buffer had highest sonication effect among various solvents. The sonication effect was increased as the increasement of the value of pH, on the contrary, ionic strength and type of counterions showed no effect on sonication, With these results, we assumed that optimal sonication treatment would be as follows, solution volume was 10 ~20ml, temperature range was 20~30℃ , pH value of solution was 4.5 and type of solvent was acetate buffer

We used a survey about the need for an educational training of infectious disease response staff in Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) and officer in metropolitan cities and provincial government to conduct field epidemiological investigation. The survey was conducted from January 25 to March 15, 2016. A total of 173 participants were selected from four different groups as follows: 27 clinical specialists, 22 Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officers, 82 KCDC staff, and 42 local health department officials. Results revealed that 83% of KCDC staff and 95% of local health department officials agreed on the need for educational training to strengthen capability of personnel to conduct epidemic research and investigation. The level of their need for training was relatively high, while self-confidence levels of individuals to conduct epidemic research and investigation was low. It was concluded that there was a need to develop training programs to enhance the ability of public health officials, EIS officers, KCDC staff, and local health department personnel to conduct epidemic research and investigation.

<P>The fruit of Terminalia chebula Retz has been used as a traditional medicine in Asia and contains tannic acid, chebulagic acid, chebulinic acid and corilagin. Extract from T. chebula seeds (TCE) has various biological functions. We observed the neuroprotective effects of TCE against ischemic damage in the hippocampal C1 region (CA1) of the gerbil that had received oral administrations of TCE (100?mg/kg) once a day for 7?days before the induction of transient cerebral ischemia. In the TCE-treated ischemia group, neuronal neuclei (a marker for neurons)-positive neurons were distinctively abundant (62% of the sham group) in the CA1 4?days after ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) compared to those (12.2% of the sham group) in the vehicle-treated ischemia group. Four days after I-R TCE treatment markedly decreased the activation of astrocytes and microglia in the ischemic CA1 compared with the vehicle-treated ischemia group. In addition, immunoreactivities of Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD1), Mn-superoxide dismutase (SOD2) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the CA1 of the TCE-treated ischemia group were much higher than those in the vehicle-ischemia group 4?days after I-R. Protein levels of SOD1, SOD2 and BDNF in the TCE-treated ischemia group were also much higher than those in the vehicle-ischemia group 4?days after I-R. These results indicate that the repeated supplement of TCE protected neurons from ischemic damage induced by transient cerebral ischemia by maintaining SODs and BDNF levels as well as decreasing glial activation.</P>

<P>BACKGROUND: Recombinant human bone morphogenic protein-2 stimulates bone augmentation in animal models. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of bovine bone mineral coated with synthetic oligopeptides to enhance guided bone regeneration in the beagle 3-wall defect model and the clinical implications. METHODS: The second and fourth mandibular premolars of four adult beagle dogs were extracted bilaterally, and the extraction sites were allowed to heal for 2 months. An L-shaped defect was prepared at the central part of the extraction site with a round bur on a low-speed motor. Peptide-coated bone mineral was implanted on one side, and uncoated bone mineral was implanted on the other side. The membrane was tucked underneath the mobilized lingual flap. New bone formation at the test and control sites was determined at 4 weeks. RESULTS: No specimen revealed any evidence of infection or foreign body reaction, and all wounds showed a good healing response. Sites augmented with peptide-coated bone mineral and uncoated mineral exhibited excellent maintenance of the ridge contour. There was more new bone at sites with peptide-coated bone mineral than at control sites. The new bone in sites with peptide-coated bone mineral was deposited evenly around the graft material, and bone mineral was integrated fully into the new bone. CONCLUSION: Deproteinized cancellous bovine bone coated with synthetic oligopeptides enhanced new bone formation, and it seemed to be a better material for guided bone regeneration in the beagle L-shaped defect model.</P>

<P>In this work, medical diagnosis of sepsis was conducted via quantitative analysis of lysophosphatidylcholine 16:0 (LPC 16:0) by using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry based on a parylene-matrix chip. In the first step, specific mass peaks for the diagnosis of sepsis were searched by comparing MALDI-TOF mass spectra of sepsis patient sera with healthy controls and pneumonia patient sera. Two mass peaks at <I>m</I>/<I>z</I> = 496.3 and 518.3 were chosen as those that are specifically different for sepsis sera to compare with healthy controls and pneumonia patient sera. These mass peaks were identified to be protonated and sodium adducts of LPC 16:0 by using tandem mass spectra (MS<SUP>2</SUP> and MS<SUP>3</SUP>) of purely synthesized LPC 16:0 and extracted LPC 16:0 from a healthy control and a sepsis patient. In the next step, a standard curve for LPC 16:0 for the quantitative analysis of LPC 16:0 with MALDI-TOF MS based on the parylene-matrix chip was prepared, and the statistical correlation to the LC-MS analysis results was demonstrated by using the Bland-Altman test and Passing-Bablok regression. Finally, MALDI-TOF MS based on the parylene-matrix chip was used for the quantification of LPC 16:0 with sera from patients with severe sepsis and septic shock (<I>n</I> = 143), pneumonia patients (<I>n</I> = 12), and healthy sera (<I>n</I> = 31). The sensitivity and the selectivity of medical diagnosis of sepsis was estimated to be 97.9% and 95.5% by using MALDI-TOF MS based on the parylene-matrix chip, respectively.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

<P>We present a library of high-resolution (R lambda/Delta lambda similar to 45,000) and high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N >= 200) near-infrared spectra for stars of a wide range of spectral types and luminosity classes. The spectra were obtained with the Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrograph covering the full range of the H (1.496-1.780 mu m) and K (2.080-2.460 mu m) atmospheric windows. The targets were primarily selected for being MK standard stars covering a wide range of effective temperatures and surface gravities, with metallicities close to the solar value. Currently, the library includes flux-calibrated and telluric-absorption-corrected spectra of 84 stars, with prospects for expansion to provide denser coverage of the parametric space. Throughout the H and K atmospheric windows, we identified spectral lines that are sensitive to T-eff or log g and defined corresponding spectral indices. We also provide their equivalent widths (EWs). For those indices, we derive empirical relations between the measured EWs and the stellar atmospheric parameters. Therefore, the derived empirical equations can be used to calculate the T-eff and log g of a star without requiring stellar atmospheric models.</P>
