<P>Self-assembly of inter- and intraphases between the ionomer membrane and mechanical reinforcements in reinforced polymeric composite membranes is of great interest in both physics and chemistry, particularly for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) application. One of the greatest challenges is to obtain an optimally structured polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-reinforced perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) composite membrane <I>via</I> solution processing. For high- performance and durable PEMFC applications, the self-assembly of interphases of the ionomers/reinforcements and intraphases of the ionomers in the composite PEM needs to be carefully tailored. Here, we show that post-assembly modification of a PTFE/PFSA composite membrane using a spin-drying method can significantly improve fuel cell performance and reliability. The forced assembly of PFSA ionomers during spinning results in greater infiltration yields into the porous PTFE media. In this way, spin-drying post-treatment results in lower gas crossover and improved mechanical durability. This process also yields larger regions of ionic clusters, which facilitate proton conduction at low relative humidity, affording higher fuel cell currents and greater efficiency.</P>
Reemergence of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus on Jeju Island

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) strains responsible for recent outbreaks in the United States have been occurring in Mainland Korea since late 2013. Over the past 10 years, PEDV outbreaks have not been reported on Jeju Island. However, in late March of 2014, PEDV re-emerged on Jeju Island and was found to be genetically identical to PEDV strains currently circulating in Mainland Korea. The present study was conducted to provide a better understanding of the epidemiology of PEDV and more effective preventive measures against PED.

<P>In late 2013, outbreaks of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) infection recurred in South Korea. Genetic and phylogenetic analyses showed that isolates from the outbreaks were most closely related to emergent US strains of PEDV. These US strain–like PEDV variants are prevalent in South Korea and responsible for recent outbreaks in the country.</P>
Cancer‐upregulated gene 2 (CUG2) overexpression induces apoptosis in SKOV‐3 cells

<P><B>Abstract</B></P>10.1002/cbf.1678.abs<P>Cancer‐upregulated gene 2 (CUG2) was originally identified as a potential oncogene commonly up‐regulated in various human cancers. Recently, CUG2 was also identified as a new member of a centromere protein complex, important in the formation of a functional kinetochore complex. Presently, we report the pro‐apoptotic effect of CUG2 when this gene was overexpressed in the SKOV‐3 human ovarian cancer cell line. Apoptotic cell death mediated by CUG2 overexpression was independently demonstrated using cell viability determination, flow cytometry analysis, chromosome fragmentation assay, and the cleavage of the death substrate poly(ADP‐ribose) polymerase. Moreover, activation of caspase‐3 and ‐8 and the cytoplasmic translocation of mitochondrial cytochrome <I>c</I> were evident upon CUG2 expression. Apoptotic cell death was also observed during early development of zebrafish when CUG2 was overexpressed in zebrafish embryo. We propose that high expression of CUG2 induces apoptotic cell death. The efficacy of the CA-2-MP120 vaccine, a cell culture-attenuated strain of virulent porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), was assessed in pigs. Despite the persistence of viremia in all vaccinated animals during the immunization period, the virus was not detected in vaccinated pigs following challenge. Furthermore, no pigs in the vaccinated group shed PRRSV nasally, orally or rectally throughout the experiment. Moreover, histopathological lung and lymph node lesions in the immunized group were much milder than those in the unimmunized and challenged group. These results indicated that CA-2-MP120 can provide effective protection against virulent wild-type PRRSV-2.

Malignant tumors located in the head and neck areas intermittently show symptoms similar to a temporomandibular disorder (TMD). In our case, a patient who first visited us complaining of TMD-like symptoms, such as trismus and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain on the left side, was identified as a sufferer of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) that arose from the left maxillary sinus. The patient may have a TMD symptom, but we are skeptical because the patient also complained of a spontaneously developed numbness on the same side of his upper lip. We observed the panoramic radiograph closely and found the blurred maxillary sinus inferior wall. Dental cone-beam computed tomography confirmed the tentative diagnosis of malignancy on the maxillary sinus. After he had been referred to the Department of Otolaryngology, the diagnosis of the ACC was confirmed. Adequate diagnosis is vital for a quick treatment of the malignancy. There are some keys for differential diagnosis of TMD-like symptoms.
