A Study on Fire Characteristics in a Tall and Narrow Atrium

The modeling on fire safety assessment for a tall and narrow atrium is carried out using a reduced and full scale atrium models based on the performances of flow behavior in and near comer fire and smoke ventilation system. The comer (or wall) effects on the flame behavior considering air entrainment into a flame was evaluated theoretically and experimentally. Temperature, upward velocity, inlet air velocity, and pressure difference between the atrium space and atmosphere were measured systematically in a reduced scale model. The performance of the modeling to estimate temperature rise and natural air ventilation volume was verified based on the experimental results. Smoke filling rate from a model fire source set at the center of a tall and narrow atrium is fastest in the other cases in which fire source set in or near a corner. This suggested that the centering of the fire source is acceptable as the fire source position to assess the fire safety design for a tall and narrow atrium.

<P>Primordial germ cells (PGCs) develop only into sperm and oocytes <I>in vivo</I>. The molecular mechanisms underlying human PGC specification are poorly understood due to inaccessibility of cell materials and lack of <I>in vitro</I> models for tracking the earliest stages of germ cell development. Here, we describe a defined and stepwise differentiation system for inducing pre-migratory PGC-like cells (PGCLCs) from human pluripotent stem cells (PSCs). In response to cytokines, PSCs differentiate first into a heterogeneous mesoderm-like cell population and then into PGCLCs, which exhibit minimal PRDM14 expression. PGC specification in humans is similar to the murine process, with the sequential activation of mesodermal and PGC genes, and the suppression of neural induction and of <I>de novo</I> DNA methylation, suggesting that human PGC formation is induced via epigenesis, the process of germ cell specification via inductive signals from surrounding somatic cells. This study demonstrates that PGC commitment in humans shares key features with that of the mouse, but also highlights key differences, including transcriptional regulation during the early stage of human PGC development (3–6 weeks). A more comprehensive understanding of human germ cell development may lead to methodology for successfully generating PSC-derived gametes for reproductive medicine.</P>

Quantum degenerate gases of ytterbium atoms in three-dimensional optical lattices are studied for bosonic isotopes and mixtures of bosonic and fermionic isotopes. A quantum phase transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulating state is observed for bosonic isotopes. In the deep Mott insulating region, we perform one-color photoassociation spectroscopy and investigate the site occupancy. In addition, Bose-Fermi mixtures of Yb isotopes in optical lattices are studied using two different combinations of mixtures.
Estimates of Hyperbolic Metric with Applications to Teichmuller Spaces

We show a monotonicity property of the hyperbolic metric of a punctured rectangular torus. We will then deduce a lower estimate of the hyperbolic metric of the domain C\{0,1}. We also determine the value of hyperbolic sup-norm of standard quadratic differentials on the once-punctured square torus or the symmetric four-times punctured sphere. This enables us to compute numerically the inner and outer radii of the Bers embedding of the corrdesponding Teichmuller space under the hypothesis of some conjectural properties of it

In this paper, we study analytic and geometric properties of the solution q(z) to the differential equation q(z) + zq'(z)/q(z) = h(z) with the initial condition q(0) = 1 for a given analytic function h(z) on the unit disk |z| < 1 in the complex plane with h(0) = 1. In particular, we investigate the possible largest constant c > 0 such that the condition |Im [zf"(z)/f'(z)]| < c on |z| < 1 implies starlikeness of an analytic function f(z) on |z| < 1 with f(0) = f'(0) - 1 = 0.
Uniformly locally univalent functions and Hardy spaces

We consider the class of uniformly locally univalent functions on the unit disk with prescribed pre-Schwarzian norm. In the present paper, we show that the class is contained in the Hardy space of a specific exponent depending on the norm.
