What Coaches Value about Coaching Knowledge: A Comparative Study Across a Range of Domains

( Sofia Figueiredo Marques Dos Santos ),( Isabel Maria Ribeiro Mesquita ),( Amandio Braga Dos Santos Greca ),( Antonio Fernando Boleto Rosado ) 체육과학연구원 2010 International Journal of Applied Sports Sciences Vol.22 No.2

This study aimed to provide a better understanding of what coaches value about the knowledge necessary to effectively accomplish their job tasks across a range of domains. Coaches` perceptions related to knowledge areas were analyzed regarding the influence of professional experience and academic background. A sample of 343 coaches from 22 different sports responded to a questionnaire applied to understand coaches` perception of the knowledge value, and to relate it to demographic characteristics. Data analysis began with an exploratory factorial analysis with Maximum Likelihood Factoring (MLF) and Oblimin rotation. The emergent factors were then submitted to One-way ANOVA and Tukey`s post hoc multiple comparisons to analyse the influence of professional experience and academic background. The results showed that important knowledge areas for coaches are assembled in two major domains: knowledge about sport-specific contents and knowledge about educating other coaches and management. Coaches` characteristics influenced their perceptions about the value of sport-specific knowledge as the more experienced coaches and those with higher education degrees, both in Physical Education and Sport and in other courses, ascribed more importance to sport-specific knowledge than coaches with less experience or academic qualification. On the other hand, coaches` characteristics did not induce differences in coaches` perceptions about knowledge to educate other coaches and management.

Difficulties of Portuguese Patients Following Acute Myocardial Infarction: Predictors of Readmissions and Unchanged Lifestyles

        Sofia Nunes,Guilhermina Rego,Rui Nunes 한국간호과학회 2016 Asian Nursing Research Vol.10 No.2

Purpose: Myocardial infarction can occur due to known risk factors and lifestyle choices. The difficulties that patients experience after discharge can lead to readmission and nonadherence to lifestyle change. The purpose of this study was to analyze the difficulties experienced by patients after hospitalization due to myocardial infarction and to identify the predictors of readmission and unchanged lifestyles. Methods: The study used a mixed-methods design across 106 patients who had experienced a first episode of acute myocardial infarction. The data were collected from two patient interviews and the patients' medical records. A logistic regression was used to predict nchanged lifestyle and readmission. Results: In the first interview, 74.5% of the patients reported receiving information prior to discharge. Six months after discharge, 80.2% mentioned that they had changed their lifestyles, but only 59.4% reported that their health had improved, and 75.5% continued to have concerns regarding their health. Patients described difficulties with regard to psychological problems, family dynamics, professional issues, problems with managing cardiovascular symptoms, and complications associated with hospital interventions. A follow-up assessment revealed that 12.3% of patients had been readmitted for cardiovascular disease. Conclusions: The analysis revealed significant predictors of readmission amongst patients with hypertension and three-vessel disease. Specifically, the number of people in the household, per capita income, and a lack of information/education provided at discharge as well as problems related to mental health after discharge predicted unchanged lifestyle. An educational program might be advantageous to clarify doubts and involve patients in their own disease management.

Modifications to Treatment Plan of Rectal Cancer in Response to COVID-19 at the Philippine General Hospital

        Sofia Isabel T. Manlubatan,Marc Paul J. Lopez,Mark Augustine S. Onglao,Hermogenes J. Monroy III 대한대장항문학회 2021 Annals of Coloproctolgy Vol.37 No.4

Purpose: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has strained healthcare resources worldwide. Despite the high number of cases, cancer management should remain one of the priorities of healthcare, as any delay would potentially cause disease progression. Methods: This was an observational study that included nonmetastatic rectal cancer patients managed at the Philippine General Hospital from March 16 to May 31, 2020, coinciding with the lockdown. The treatment received and their outcomes were investigated. Results: Of the 52 patients included, the majority were female (57.7%), belonging to the age group of 50 to 69 years (53.8%), and residing outside the capital (59.6%). On follow-up, 23.1% had no disease progression, 17.3% had local progression, 28.8% had metastatic progression, 19.2% have died, and 11.5% were lost to follow up. The initial plan for 47.6% patients was changed. Of the 21 patients with nonmetastatic disease, 2 underwent outright resection. The remaining 19 required neoadjuvant therapy. Eight have completed their neoadjuvant treatment, 8 are undergoing treatment, 2 had their treatment interrupted, and 1 has yet to begin treatment. Among the 9 patients who completed neoadjuvant therapy, only 1 was able to undergo resection on time. The rest were delayed, with a median time of 4 months. One has repeatedly failed to arrive for her surgery due to public transport limitations. There was 1 adjuvant chemotherapy-related mortality. Conclusion: Delays in cancer management resulted in disease progression in several patients. Alternative neoadjuvant treatment options should be considered while taking into account oncologic outcomes, acceptable toxicity, and limitation of potential COVID-19 exposure.

The Evolving Epidemiology of Serotype Distribution and Antimicrobial Resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae Strains Isolated from Adults in Crete, Greece, 2009–2016

        Sofia Maraki,Viktoria Eirini Mavromanolaki,Dimitra Stafylaki,George Hamilos,George Samonis 대한감염학회 2018 Infection and Chemotherapy Vol.50 No.4

Background: Pneumococcal disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, especially in patients with comorbidities and advanced age. This study evaluated trends in epidemiology of adult pneumococcal disease in Crete, Greece, by identifying serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of consecutive Streptococcus pneumoniae strains isolated from adults during an 8-year time period (2009–2016) and the indirect effect of the infant pneumococcal higher-valent conjugate vaccines 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). Materials and Methods: Antimicrobial susceptibility was performed by E-test and serotyping by Quellung reaction. Multidrug resistance (MDR) was defined as non-susceptibility to penicillin (PNSP) combined with resistance to ≥2 non-β-lactam antimicrobials. Results: A total of 135 S. pneumoniae strains were isolated from adults during the study period. Twenty-one serotypes were identified with 17F, 15A, 3, 19A, and 11A, being the most common. The coverage rates of PCV10, and PCV13 were 17.8% and 37.8%, respectively. PCV13 serotypes decreased significantly from 68.4% in 2009 to 8.3% in 2016 (P = 0.002). The most important emerging non-PCV13 serotypes were 17F, 15A, and 11A, with 15A being strongly associated with antimicrobial resistance and MDR. Among all study isolates, penicillin-resistant and MDR strains represented 7.4% and 14.1%, respectively. Predominant PNSP serotypes were 19A (21.7%), 11A (17.4%), and 15A (17.4%). Erythromycin, clindamycin, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and levofloxacin resistant rates were 30.4%, 15.6%, 16.3%, 16.3%, and 1.5%, respectively. Conclusion: Although pneumococcal disease continues to be a health burden in adults in Crete, our study reveals a herd protection effect of the infant pneumococcal higher-valent conjugate vaccination. Surveillance of changes in serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance among pneumococcal isolates are necessary to guide optimal prevention and treatment strategies.

      • HAPPINESS AND THE ASYMMETRIC MOTIVATION BEHIND EXPERIENTIAL AND MATERIAL PURCHASES

Sofia Kousi,Flora Kokkinaki 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2016 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2016 No.7

The motivation behind experiential and material purchases is asymmetric: experiences are more strongly motivated by happiness-seeking and meaning-seeking than materials are. The two motivators mediate the elicited happiness from purchases. Strong happiness or meaning seeking motivation will result in similar levels of happiness for both experiences and materials.

        Eco-friendlier and sustainable natural-based additives for poly(vinyl chloride)-based composites

        Sofia Marceneiro,Irene Lobo,Isabel Dias,Elizabete de Pinho,Ana M.A. Dias,Hermínio C. de Sousa 한국공업화학회 2022 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.110 No.-

This work presents novel natural-based and solvent-free additives for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), namelycalcium soaps, obtained for the first time from naturally occurring epoxidized soybean and linseed oils(ESO/ELO); and biogenic calcium carbonate, obtained from chicken eggshells (EG) after different acidand/or thermal pre-treatments. Results show that these additives were able to: i) reduce the concentrationof volatile organic compounds released from PVC films, including alcohols, aldehydes, esters andphthalates (97,95,90 and 84% chromatographic peak area reduction, respectively), originating safer materials;ii) improve the long-term thermal stability of PVC-based materials, while maintaining theirmechanical performance and when compared to control samples formulated with a high-performancecommonly employed solvent-based thermal stabilizer. Films formulated with ESO-based calcium soapsand with EG powders treated with acid and thermal treatment (200 C) presented the best performancein terms of heat aging and long-term thermal stability. The former also slightly improved the thermomechanicalproperties of the films indicating that these additives are also working as secondary plasticizersfor PVC. This work gives an important contribution towards the safety and sustainability of highperformancePVC-based materials, by allowing the substitution of commercially available thermal stabilizersby new eco-friendlier and safer alternatives obtained from renewable sources.

Susceptibility of Glycopeptide-Resistant Enterococci to Linezolid, Quinupristin/dalfopristin, Tigecycline and Daptomycin in a Tertiary Greek Hospital

        Sofia Maraki,George Samonis,Dimitra Dimopoulou,Elpis Mantadakis 대한감염학회 2014 Infection and Chemotherapy Vol.46 No.4

We investigated the antibiotic susceptibility of glycopeptide-resistant enterococci (GRE). Seventy consecutive GRE were tested. Sixty-two isolates were identified as Enterococcus faecium (88.6%), and 8 (11.4%) as Enterococcus faecalis. All strains weresusceptible to linezolid and daptomycin, while 17.1% (12/70) and 11.4% (8/70) were resistant to quinupristin/dalfopristin (QD)and tigecycline, respectively. All E. faecalis isolates were resistant to QD, while 4 of 62 (6.5%) E. faecium isolates were resistantto QD. All E. faecalis isolates were susceptible to tigecycline, while 14.5% (9/62) E. faecium isolates were resistant. Continuedsurveillance of GRE antibiotic susceptibilities is important for combating these multi-resistant nosocomial pathogens.
