Fasting Blood Glucose, Cholesterol, and Risk of Primary Liver Cancer: The Kailuan Study

        Xiangming Ma,Haozhe Cui,Miaomiao Sun,Qian Liu,Xining Liu,Guangjian Li,Yaochen Wei,Qingjiang Fu,Siqing Liu,Liying Cao 대한암학회 2021 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.53 No.4

Purpose The influence of fasting blood glucose (FBG) and cholesterolemia primary liver cancer (PLC) in China was analyzed via a large prospective cohort study based on a community population, and the combined effects between them were investigated. Materials and Methods Overall, 98,936 staff from the Kailuan Group who participated in and finished physical examinations bet-ween 2006 and 2007 were included in the cohort study. Their medical information was collected and they were followed up after examination. The correlations of serum FBG or total cholesterol (TC) with PLC were analyzed. Then, we categorized all staff into four groups: normal FBG/non-hypocholesterolemia, normal FBG/hypocholesterolemia, elevated FBG/non-hypocholesterolemia, elevated FBG/hypocholesterolemia, and normal FBG/non-hypocholesterolemia was used as a control group. The combined effects of elevated FBG and hypocholesterolemia with PLC were analyzed using the Age-scale Cox proportional hazard regression model. Results During 1,134,843.68 person-years follow-up, a total of 388 PLC cases occurred. We found the elevated FBG and hypocholesterolemia increase the risk for PLC, respectively. Compared with the non-hypocholesterolemia/normal FBG group, the risk of PLC was significantly increased in the non-hypocholesterolemia/elevated FBG group (hazard artio [HR], 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.88 to 1.62) and hypocholesterolemia/normal FBG group (HR, 1.53; 95% CI, 1.19 to 1.97), and in the hypocholesterolemia/elevated FBG group (HR, 3.16; 95% CI, 2.13 to 4.69). And, a significant interaction effect was found of FBG and TC on PLC. All results were independent from the influence of liver disease. Conclusion Elevated serum FBG and hypocholesterolemia are risk factors for PLC, especially when combined. Thus, for the prevention and treatment of PLC, serum FBG and TC levels should be investigated.

STABILITY OF THE MILSTEIN METHOD FOR STOCHASTIC DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS WITH JUMPS

Liu Hu,Siqing Gan 한국전산응용수학회 2011 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.29 No.5

In this paper the Milstein method is proposed to approximate the solution of a linear stochastic differential equation with Poisson-driven jumps. The strong Milstein method and the weak Milstein method are shown to capture the mean square stability of the system. Furthermore using some technique, our result shows that these two kinds of Milstein methods can well reproduce the stochastically asymptotical stability of the system for all suffciently small time-steps. Some numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the conclusions.

Characterization of the global transcriptome and microsatellite marker information for spotted halibut Verasper variegatus

        Jianlong Ge,Siqing Chen,Changlin Liu,Li Bian,Huiling Sun,Jie Tan 한국유전학회 2017 Genes & Genomics Vol.39 No.3

The spotted halibut Verasper variegatus is an economically important flatfish species distributed in Japan, Korea and China. However, the genomic resources regarding this species were scarcity, which hindered our understanding of the genetics and biological mechanisms in spotted halibut. In this study, we examined the global transcriptome from six major tissues of spotted halibut. Approximately 40 million of high quality reads were generated using Illumina paired-end sequencing technology. More than 9 Gbp data were generated, and de novo assembled into 59,235 unigenes, with an N50 of 938 bp. Based on sequence similarity search with known protein database, 34,084 (57.5%) showed significant similarity to known proteins in Nr database, and 28,875 (48.7%) had BLAST hits in Swiss-Prot database. 19,562 and 23,037 unigenes were assigned into gene ontology categories and clusters of orthologous group, respectively. 9138 unigenes were mapped to 211 KEGG pathways. For functional marker development, 13,322 candidate simple sequence repeats were identified in the transcriptome and 7235 primer pairs were successfully designed. Among 72 primer pairs selected for validation, 67 (93.1%) were successful in PCR amplification and 14 (19.4%) exhibited obvious repeat length polymorphisms in a culture spotted halibut population. The transcriptomic data and microsatellite markers will provide valuable resources for future functional gene analyses, genetic map construction, and quantitative trait loci mapping in V. variegatus.

Relationships Among Character Strengths, Self-efficacy, Social Support, Depression, and Psychological Well-being of Hospital Nurses

        Xie Jianfei,Liu Min,Zhong Zhuqing,Zhang Qiuxiang,Zhou Jianda,Wang Lu,Ma Keke,Ding Siqing,Zhang Xiaohong,Sun Qian,Cheng Andy S.K. 한국간호과학회 2020 Asian Nursing Research Vol.14 No.3

Purpose: From the perspective of positive psychology, our study aimed to explore depressive symptoms and psychological well-being among Chinese nurses, as well as analyze the impacts of character strengths, self-efficacy and social support on the mental health of nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive design using five self-reported questionnaires was used to investigate a cohort of 4238 nurses during 2018. A structural equation modeling analysis was used to verify a hypothetical model linking character strengths, self-efficacy, social support, depressive symptoms, and psychological well-being. Results: The prevalence of depression among this cohort of Chinese nurses was 58.1%. The mean scores for caring, inquisitiveness, and self-control were 19.93 (SD ¼ 2.82), 15.94 (SD ¼ 3.00), and 16.34 (SD ¼ 2.95), respectively. The hypothesized model was a good fit of the data (c2/df ¼ 1.77, p ¼ .183, root mean square error of approximation ¼ 0.04, goodness of fit index ¼ 1.00, comparative fit index ¼ 1.00, TuckereLewis index ¼ 1.00). Except for the path from self-control to depression, the other hypothetical paths investigated were statistically significant. Conclusion: Character strengths were directly and positively associated with psychological well-being. Inquisitiveness was the strongest direct protective factor for depression. In addition, character strengths indirectly alleviated depression and increased psychological well-being through mediating variables of social support and self-efficacy. This study should alert nurse managers that more attention should be paid to the character strengths and mental health of nurses. This study provides evidence for interventions based on character strengths as a management strategy to support the mental health of nurses.

Transcriptome analysis of gene expression patterns during embryonic development in golden cuttlefish (Sepia esculenta)

        Li Bian,Changlin Liu,Siqing Chen,Fazhen Zhao,Jianlong Ge,Jie Tan 한국유전학회 2018 Genes & Genomics Vol.40 No.3

Golden cuttlefish (Sepia esculenta) is an important economic species in China. Because of the rapid decline of its natural resource, researchers are exploring breeding technique for this species. The major obstacle that hinders artificial breeding of S. esculenta is the low larvae survival rate. Mortality is especially high during the mouth-opening stage. Investigating the embryogenesis before the first feed could provide theoretical guidance for reproduction control and breeding of S. esculenta and other Sepia species. In this study, we analyzed the dynamics of the S. esculenta transcriptome along different stages of embryonic development by mRNA-sEq. Our bioinformatics protocol identified 1492 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) across the early developmental stages. Gene ontology enrichment analysis showed that the DEGs were significantly involved in developmental processes and molecular functions, including chitin metabolic process, peptidase activity, catalytic activity, and calcium ion binding. Our results indicated that genes related to cuttlebone development and gene regulation functions were active during the early life phase of S. esculenta. Hierarchical clustering of the DEGs reflected the successiveness of the developmental stages, revealing that gene expression patterns of neighboring stages were similar. The DEG analysis allowed us to identify specific genes and relevant biological pathways to better understand the molecular mechanisms during each developmental stage. This study provides novel insights into the processes underlying the early developmental stages of S. esculenta. The transcriptomic data and identified genes will serve as valuable references for the developmental biology of this species and will help promote its aquaculture research.

Adsorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solution to Ni-doped bamboo charcoal

        Yin Wang,Xuejiang Wang,Xin Wang,Mian Liu,Zhen Wu,Lianzhen Yang,Siqing Xia,Jianfu Zhao 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.1

Bamboo charcoal (BC) obtained by pyrolysis of Makino bamboo in the absence of oxygen was used as support for the preparation of Ni-doped adsorbent (Ni-BC). The low-cost composite was characterized and used as an adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from water. The results showed that both BET surface area and total pore volume of Ni-BC increased. The adsorption of Pb(II) strongly depended on solution pH,temperature and ionic strength. The adsorption isotherms followed Langmuir isotherm model well, and the maximum adsorption capacities of Pb(II) at 298 K were 25.0 and 142.7 mg/g for BC and Ni-BC,respectively. The adsorption processes were well fitted by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorptions of Pb(II) onto both adsorbents were feasible, spontaneous, and exothermic under the studied conditions. The spent Ni-BC could be readily regenerated for reuse.

      • Microbiota-Derived Lactate Accelerates Intestinal Stem-Cell-Mediated Epithelial Development

        Lee, Yong-Soo,Kim, Tae-Young,Kim, Yeji,Lee, Su-Hyun,Kim, Seungil,Kang, Sung Wan,Yang, Jin-Young,Baek, In-Jeoung,Sung, Young Hoon,Park, Yun-Yong,Hwang, Sung Wook,O, Eunju,Kim, Kwang Soon,Liu, Siqing,Ka Elsevier 2018 Cell host & microbe Vol.24 No.6

Summary

Symbionts play an indispensable role in gut homeostasis, but underlying mechanisms remain elusive. To clarify the role of lactic-acid-producing bacteria (LAB) on intestinal stem-cell (ISC)-mediated epithelial development, we fed mice with LAB-type symbionts such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus spp. Here we show that administration of LAB-type symbionts significantly increased expansion of ISCs, Paneth cells, and goblet cells. Lactate stimulated ISC proliferation through Wnt/β-catenin signals of Paneth cells and intestinal stromal cells. Moreover, Lactobacillus plantarum strains lacking lactate dehydrogenase activity, which are deficient in lactate production, elicited less ISC proliferation. Pre-treatment with LAB-type symbionts or lactate protected mice in response to gut injury provoked by combined treatments with radiation and a chemotherapy drug. Impaired ISC-mediated epithelial development was found in mice deficient of the lactate G-protein-coupled receptor, Gpr81. Our results demonstrate that LAB-type symbiont-derived lactate plays a pivotal role in promoting ISC-mediated epithelial development in a Gpr81-dependent manner.

Highlights

Symbiont-generated lactate is critical for Lgr5+ ISC-mediated epithelial development

Lactate signals through the G-protein-coupled receptor Gpr81 to elicit ISC proliferation

Lactobacillus plantarum lacking lactate dehydrogenase fails to induce ISC regeneration

Pre-feeding of lactate protects mice from chemotherapy- and radiation-induced gut damage

Graphical Abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
