Gerstmann-Sträussler-Scheinker (GSS) disease is a rare hereditary prion disease which is clinically characterized by a progressive cerebellar ataxia followed by cognitive impairment. We report a rare case of GSS disease in a 39-year-old male patient who complained of a progressive gait disturbance followed by dysarthria with cognitive impairment, after five months from the onset of initial symptom. His brain MRI scan revealed multifocal symmetric diffusion restricted lesions with T2/FLAIR hyperintensities in bilateral cerebral cortices, basal ganglia, and thalami. His family members also manifested similar symptoms in their 40–50s, suggesting the possibility of a genetic disease. Finally, he was genetically diagnosed with GSS disease by real-time quaking-induced conversion and prion protein (PRNP) gene sequencing test.

Cancer immunotherapy has been acknowledged as a new paradigm for cancer treatment, with notable therapeutic effects on certain cancer types. Despite their significant potential, clinical studies over the past decade have revealed that cancer immunotherapy has low response rates in the majority of solid tumors. One of the key causes for poor responses is known to be the relatively low immunogenicity of solid tumors. Because most solid tumors are immune desert ‘cold tumors’ with antitumor immunity blocked from the onset of innate immunity, combination therapies that combine validated T-based therapies with approaches that can increase tumor-immunogenicity are being considered as relevant therapeutic options. This review paper focuses on immunogenic cell death (ICD) as a way of enhancing immunogenicity in tumor tissues. We will thoroughly review how ICDs such as necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis can improve anti-tumor immunity and outline clinical trials targeting ICD. Finally, we will discuss the potential of ICD inducers as an adjuvant for cancer immunotherapy. [BMB Reports 2023; 56(5): 275-286]
Isolated Intracranial Rosai–Dorfman Disease Mimicking Meningioma: A Case Report

Rosai–Dorfman Disease (RDD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disease, and the occurrence of isolated intracranial RDD is extremely rare. Most cases of intracranial RDDs present as dural masses showing homogenous enhancement on MRI, which makes it difficult to differentiate these masses from meningiomas before surgery unless massive cervical lymphadenopathy is observed. We herein report a rare case of isolated intracranial RDD in a 65-year-old male. Brain MRI revealed a well-defined enhancing mass-like lesion involving the right frontal convexity and subtle diffusion restriction. However, only a subtle blush was observed on the preoperative cerebral angiogram. Although instances of isolated intracranial RDD are rare, it should be considered as a potential differential diagnosis when a dural mass with hypovascularity is visualized on the cerebral angiogram.

무의 생육 온도에 따른 제1 본엽의 발생 시기를 예측하는 모형을 개발하고자 제1 본엽의 발생 속도(Rate of emergence of the first leaf, REFL)를 계산하였다. 이를 위해 무 ‘신청일’ 품종을 대상으로 생장상(상대습도, 50~70%; 주간/야간 시간, 12/12)에서 다섯 가지 온도처리(평균온도 10, 15, 20, 25, 30°C, 주야간 일교차 6°C)를 하였다. 무의 제 1본엽 발생 시기를 파종일부터 20일 동안 조사하여 각 처리에서 제1 본엽 발생 시기까지의 평균 경과 일수를 계산하고 그 값에 역수를 취하여 온도별 REFL를 구하였다. 그 결과 REFL은 10°C에서 25°C까지 증가하였지만 25°C와 30°C에서는 차이가 나지 않았다. 온도와 REFL의 관계식은 비선형모형인 briere 2수식을 이용하였을 때 결정계수(r²)는 0.97로 양호한 모형 적합성을 나타내었고 최적 온도는 28.2°C로 분석되었다. 제1 본엽 발생이 완료되는 시기의 변이를 나타내는 발생완료분포모형은 3-parameter Weibull 함수를 사용하였으며, 결정계수(r²)는 0.94로 높은 값을 나타내었다. 이를 통하여 시간에 따라 발생이 완료되는 개체들의 비율을 알 수 있다. 이번 연구의 결과는 환경에 따른 무의 최적 생육을 구명하기 위한 일환으로 무 생리 변화를 기반으로한 모델링의 초석이 될 것으로 사료된다.
