Mummification in Korea and China: Mawangdui, Song, Ming and Joseon Dynasty Mummies

<P>Over the decades, mummy studies have expanded to reconstruct a multifaceted knowledge about the ancient populations' living conditions, pathologies, and possible cause of death in different spatiotemporal contexts. Mainly due to linguistic barriers, however, the international knowledge of East Asian mummies has remained sketchy until recently. We thus analyse and summarize the outcomes of the studies so far performed in Korea and China in order to provide mummy experts with little-known data on East Asian mummies. In this report, similarities and differences in the mummification processes and funerary rituals in Korea and China are highlighted. Although the historical periods, the region of excavation, and the structures of the graves differ, the cultural aspects, the mechanisms of mummification, and biological evidence appear to be essentially similar to each other. Independently from the way they are called locally, the Korean and Chinese mummies belong to the same group with a shared cultural background.</P>

[Aims] Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler has many commercial strains both morphologically and physiologically similar to each other. At present, detection of polymorphism in rDNA-IGS region (Babasaki, 2006) and/or RAPD marker (Zhang and Molina, 1995) is generally used for strain typing of L. edodes. However, it is rather time-and-cost consuming. Inter-retrotransposon amplified polymorphism (IRAP)-PCR method mainly used for horticultural crops takes less time and lower in cost in strain typing (Kalendar et al, 1999). In this study, we designed IRAP primers for L. edodes and verified their strain typing efficiency. [Method] Thirty three strains were provided for this study. Either fungal cultures on PDA or fungal tissues of fruit bodies were cut into approximately 4 x 4 x 4 mm. Total DNA of each samples were extracted by DNeasy Plant Mini Kit (QIAGEN). For PCR, IRAP primer set and Pfu-X polymerase (greiner) were performed. Based on LTR (Long Terminal Repeat) sequence in L. edodes, we designed one set of primers amplifying the regions between retrotransposons. Ampricons were electrophored for 50 min at 100 V on 1.7 % agarose gel with GelRed (Biotium) and evaluated under UV irradiation. [Results] The products obtained by IRAP-PCR were determined using mini-gel electrophoresis system. The band patterns of IRAP-PCR products differ among strains except the ones having the same parental cultivar. The detected bands were bright and clear without smearing. The IRAP-PCR products of fungal cultures on PDA and correlating fungal tissues of fruit bodies showed the same band pattern, suggesting that the procedure is highly reproducible. Thus, it is considered that IRAP-PCR with short ranged (ca. 1 kb) electrophoresis is a time-efficient and practical strain typing method of L. edodes.

Background/Aims: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA) using Franseen needles is reportedly useful for its high diagnostic yield. This study compared the diagnostic yield and puncturing ability of EUS-TA using 22-gauge cobalt-chromium (CO-Cr) needles with those of stainless-steel Franseen needles in patients with solid pancreatic lesions. Methods: Outcomes were compared between the 22-gauge Co-Cr Franseen needle (December 2019 to November 2020; group C) and stainless-steel needle (November 2020 to May 2022; group S). Results: A total of 155 patients (group C, 75; group S, 80) were eligible. The diagnostic accuracy was 92.0% in group C and 96.3% in group S with no significant intergroup differences (p=0.32). The rate of change in the operator (from training fellows to experts) was 20.0% (15/75) in group C and 7.5% (6/80) in group S. Stainless-steel Franseen needles showed less inter-operator difference than Co-Cr needles (p=0.03). Conclusions: Both Co-Cr and stainless-steel Franseen needles showed high diagnostic ability. Stainless-steel Franseen needles are soft and flexible; therefore, the range of puncture angles can be widely adjusted, making them suitable for training fellows to complete the procedure.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Purpose</B></P> <P>The goal of this study was to evaluate the moxifloxacin-induced QT interval prolongation in healthy male and female Korean and Japanese volunteers to investigate interethnic differences.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>This multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 2-way crossover study was conducted in healthy male and female Korean and Japanese volunteers. In each period, a single dose of moxifloxacin or placebo 400 mg was administered orally under fasting conditions. Triplicate 12-lead ECGs were recorded at defined time points before, up to 24 hours after dosing, and at corresponding time points during baseline. Serial blood sampling was conducted for pharmacokinetic analysis of moxifloxacin. The pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic data between the 2 ethnic groups were compared by using a typical analysis based on the intersection-union test and a nonlinear mixed effects method.</P> <P><B>Findings</B></P> <P>A total of 39 healthy subjects (Korean, male: 10, female: 10; Japanese, male: 10, female: 9) were included in the analysis. The concentration–effect analysis revealed that there was no change in slope (and confirmed that the difference was caused by a change in the pharmacokinetic model of moxifloxacin). A 2-compartment model with first-order absorption provided the best description of moxifloxacin’s pharmacokinetic parameters. Weight and sex were selected as significant covariates for central volume of distribution and intercompartmental clearance, respectively. An E<SUB>max</SUB> model ( E [ C ] = [ <SUB> E max </SUB> ⋅ C ] / [ <SUB> EC 50 </SUB> + C ] ) described the QT interval data of this study well. However, ethnicity was not found to be a significant factor in a pharmacokinetic–pharmacodynamic link model.</P> <P><B>Implications</B></P> <P>The drug-induced QTc prolongations evaluated using moxifloxacin as the probe did not seem to be significantly different between these Korean and Japanese subjects. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in patients with surgically altered anatomy is technically challenging. Forexample, scope insertion, selective cannulation, and intended procedures, such as stone extraction or stent placement, can be difficult. Single-balloon enteroscopy (SBE)-assisted ERCP has been used to effectively and safely address these technical issues in clinical prac-tice. However, the small working channel limits its therapeutic potential. To address this shortcoming, a short-type SBE (short SBE)with a working length of 152 cm and a channel of 3.2 mm diameter has recently been introduced. Short SBE facilitates the use of largeraccessories to complete certain procedures, such as stone extraction or self-expandable metallic stent placement. Despite the develop-ment in the SBE endoscope, various steps have to be overcome to successfully perform such procedure. To improve success, the chal-lenging factors of each procedure must be identified. At the same time, endoscopists need to be mindful of adverse events, such as per-foration, which can arise due to adhesions specific to the surgically altered anatomy. This review discussed technical tips regardingSBE-assisted ERCP in patients with surgically altered anatomy to increase success and reduce the risk of adverse events associated withERCP.

Characteristics of oscillating lifted flames in coflow have been investigated experimentally with highly<br/> diluted propane in normal and micro gravities to elucidate the stabilization mechanism. In normal gravity,<br/> oscillating lifted flames with the frequency of 2-5 Hz were observed in a certain range of fuel mole fraction<br/> and jet velocity. The oscillation frequency correlated well with jet velocity in terms of Strouhal number,<br/> defined with the stoichiometric laminar burning velocity. This demonstrated the importance of the<br/> propagation characteristics of tribrachial flames at the base of lifted flames in the flame oscillation.<br/> Microgravity experiments have been conducted after the oscillating lifted flames are stabilized in normal<br/> gravity. During the change in gravitational acceleration, the flames rapidly stabilized as nozzle attached<br/> flame mode and became stationary. This behavior confirmed that the lifted flame oscillation in normal<br/> gravity is due to the buoyancy driven instability. Numerical simulation has also been performed<br/> accounting the change in gravitational acceleration. The results successfully predicted the transition<br/> behavior from oscillating lifted flame in normal gravity to stationary attached flame in microgravity and the<br/> variation of flame shapes during the transition.
