The excessive initial corrosion rate of Mg is a critical limitation in the clinical application of biodegradable Mg implantsbecause the device loses its fi xation strength before the fractured bone heals. This study suggests a new approach to overcomethis hurdle by accelerating tissue regeneration instead of delaying the implant biodegradation. As angiogenesis is anessential process in early bone regeneration, a Mg implant coated with electrospun nanofi bers containing nitric oxide (NO),which physiologically promotes angiogenesis, is designed. The integrated device enables adjustable amounts of NO to bestored on the NO donor-conjugated nanofi ber coating, stably delivered, and released to the fractured bone tissue near theimplanted sites. An in vitro corrosion test reveals no adverse eff ect of the released NO on the corrosion behavior of the Mgimplant. Simultaneously, the optimal concentration level of NO released from the implant signifi cantly enhances tube networkformation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells without any cytotoxicity problem. This indicates that angiogenesis canbe accelerated by combining NO-releasing nanofi bers with a Mg implant. With its proven feasibility, the proposed approachcould be a novel solution for the initial stability problem of biodegradable Mg implants, leading to successful bone fi xation.
QTL analysis of shank color variation in five lines of Korean native chicken

한국재래닭은 깃털색 표현형을 기초로 다섯 계통으로 나누어져 있다. 이들 계통을 구축할 때 정강이 색에 대한 선발은 브로일러와의 차별성을 위해 회흑색 또는 암녹색의 개체를 선발해왔다. 그러나 여러 세대를 거듭한 선발에도 불구하고 모든 계통에서 다양한 정강이 색을 가진 개체들이 나타나고 있다. 본 연구는 한국재래닭 다섯 계통에서 나타나는 정강이 색의 변이를 조사하고 QTL분석을 통하여 정강이 색에 영향을 미치는 후보유 전자를 탐색하고자 실시하였다. 총 596마리 F1 개체들을 이용하여 양적형질좌위(QTL) 분석을 실시한 결과 총 8(GGA 1, 3, 4, 7, 14, 17, 24, 27)개의 염색체에서 정강이 색에 영향을 미치는 12개의 QTL을 확인하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 확인된 QTL영역에 존재 하는 후보유전자 동정을 거쳐 차후 정강이 색과 관련된 마커도움선발에 이용될 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.
Epistatic Effects of Six Candidate Genes on Fatty Acid Composition in Korean Native Chicken

지방산 조성은 고기의 풍미에 영향력 있는 중요한 경제 형질 중 하나이며, 다양한 유전자들의 효과가 알려져 있다. 본 연구는 한국 재래닭의 지방산 조성에 유의적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 조사된 6개의 후보 유전자들(DEGS1, ELOVL6, FABP3, FABP4, FASN, SCD)의 51개 SNP 조합에 대한 추가적인 분석결과로, 선행연구를 통하여 확인된 SNP 조합들이 가지는 상위성 효과에 대하여 조사하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 매우 다양한 유형의 SNP 조합들이 한국 재래닭의 지방산 조성에 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었으며, 추후에 지방산 조성과 같은 다유전자성 형질들을 실제 육종 프로그램에 활용하기 위해서는 이러한 분석이 이루어져야 될 것으로 생각된다. 본 연구 결과는 한국 재래닭의 육질, 특히 지방산 조성의 개선을 위한 유전학적인 정보를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 생각된다. Fatty acid composition is an important economic trait that affects meat flavor. Several genes that influence fatty acid composition in meat have been investigated. In a previous study, we identified 51 significant SNP × SNP interactions (P≤0.05) between nine SNPs of six candidate genes (DEGS1, ELOVL6, FABP3, FABP4, FASN, and SCD) on meat fatty acid composition in Korean native chicken. This study further investigated the patterns of the SNP × SNP interactions to understand how they affect the fatty acid content in thigh and breast meat of Korean native chicken. The significant epistatic effects of SNP combinations showed various patterns for each fatty acid trait. The results of this study suggest that the respective additive effects of each SNP on polygenic traits, such as fatty acid composition, should be considered in combination with the epistatic effect of SNP combinations in animal breeding programs. The findings of this study have provided new genetic information for improving meat quality, especially the fatty acid composition, of Korean native chicken.
Cognitive Function and Self-care in Patients with Heart Failure: A Pilot Study from Korean Patients

Purpose: Despite poor cognitive function in heart failure (HF), few studies have examined cognition and its probable implication in self-care among Korean HF patients. The purposes of this study were (1) to describe cognition in the domains of global, memory, and executive functions, (2) to explore the relationship between cognition and self-care, and (3) to determine the amount of dietary sodium intake among Korean HF patients. Methods: A pilot study was conducted: 7 HF patients (3 men, mean age 68 years) completed face-to-face interviews for neuropsychological tests of cognition and self-care including dietary sodium intake. Results: More than half of the patients had impaired global cognition, memory, or executive function; patients with more severe HF were at higher risk of poor cognitive function. Korean HF patients exhibited poor self-care, with a high dietary sodium intake (5.6 g/day), approximately twice more than the suggested guideline of 2~3 g/day for patients with stable HF. Conclusion: Cognitive dysfunction and inadequate self-care with noncompliance with dietary sodium restriction were evident in Korean HF patients. More studies are warranted that examine the prevalence of cognitive impairment and areas of deficit using neuropsychological tests in a larger sample and that examine how cognition affects self-care and compliance in salt-intake.
Heart Failure Self-management Interventions: Evidence from Korean Patients

Purpose: The aims of this study were to (1) summarize the HF self-management interventions and (2) identify gaps and priorities for further investigation. Methods: A computer search of the literature over the past decade yielded 9 HF self-management studies. Six studies used non-experimental design; only 3 (33%) studies used quasi-experimental design which were included in this review. Results: The three pivotal HF self-management interventions studies were important because they highlight the positive effects of self-management compliance and other quality of life outcomes as well as discussing various issues. The informational booklet and telephone follow-up were the most common modalities in these interventions. The periodic telephone counseling offered in 2 studies effectively facilitated patient self-management compliance. There were some methodological flaws such as small sample sizes (range 8~21 in each group) and lack of experimental designs, long-term follow-up, and random group assignment. Additionally, the use of valid, reliable outcome measures is necessary to compare the effects of the interventions worldwide. Conclusion: More clinical evidence on HF self-management is needed using a larger sample size and the efficacy needs to be tested for various outcomes, including morbidity, mortality, and health care cost.
Identification of quantitative trait loci for the fatty acid composition in Korean native chicken

Objective: Fatty acid composition is one of the most important meat quality traits because it can contribute to functional, sensorial, and nutritional factors. In this study, quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses for fatty acid composition traits were investigated in thigh and breast meat of Korean native chicken (KNC). Methods: In total, 18 fatty acid composition traits were investigated from each meat sample using 83 parents, and 595 $F_1$ chicks of 20 week old. Genotype assessment was performed using 171 informative DNA markers on 26 autosomes. The KNC linkage map was constructed by CRI-MAP software, which calculated genetic distances, with map orders between markers. The half-sib and full-sib QTL analyses were performed using GridQTL and SOLAR programs, respectively. Results: In total, 30 QTLs (12 in the thigh and 18 in the breast meat) were detected by the half-sib analysis and 7 QTLs (3 in the thigh and 4 in the breast meat) were identified by the full-sib analysis. Conclusion: With further verification of the QTL regions using additional markers and positional candidate gene studies, these results can provide valuable information for determining causative mutations affecting the fatty acid composition of KNC meat. Moreover, these findings may aid in the selection of birds with favorable fatty acid composition traits.
