<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Herein, a straightforward and highly specific dot-blot immunoassay was successfully developed for the detection of <I>Mycobacterium tuberculosis</I> antigen (10 kDa culture filtrate protein, CFP-10) <I>via</I> the formation of copper nanoshell on the gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) surface. The principle of dot-blot immunoassay was based on the reduction of Cu2+ ion on the GBP-CFP10G2-AuNPs conjugates, which has gold binding and antigen binding affinities, simultaneously, favouring to appear red dot that can be observed with naked-eye. The dot intensity is proportional to the concentration of tuberculosis antigen CFP-10, which offers a detection limit of 7.6 pg/mL. The analytical performance of GBP-CFP10G2-AuNPs-copper nanoshell dot-blot was superior than that of conventional silver nanoshell. This method was successfully applied to identify the CFP-10 antigen in the clinical urine sample with high sensitivity, specificity, and minimized sample preparation steps. This method exhibits great application potential in the field of nanomedical science for highly reliable point-of-care detection of CFP-10 antigen in real samples to early diagnosis of tuberculosis.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A specific dot-blot immunoassay to detect tuberculosis antigen CFP-10. </LI> <LI> Copper nanoshell enhancement by amplifying the signal of AuNPs on the paper strip. </LI> <LI> Signal detection with naked-eye or smartphone camera of detection limit of 8 pg/mL. </LI> <LI> Great application potential in the field of nanomedical science. </LI> </UL> </P>

We report an optical characterization of PtSi films for thermoelectric device applications which was done by using nondestructive spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). A Pt monolayer and a Pt-Si multilayer which consisted of three pairs of Pt and Si layers were deposited on p-doped-silicon substrates by using sputtering method; then, rapid annealing process was done to form PtSi films through intermixing of Pt and Si atoms at the interface. Pseudodielectric function data < " > = < "1 > + i < "2 > for the PtSi/Si samples were obtained from 1.12 to 6.52 eV by using spectroscopic ellipsometry. Employing the Tauc-Lorentz and the Drude models, determined the dielectric function (") of the PtSi films. We found that the composition ratio of Pt:Si was nearly 1:1 for the PtSi monolayer and we observed transitions between occupied and unoccupied states in the Pt 5d states. We also observed the formation of PtSi layers in the Pt-Si multilayer sample. The SE results were confirmed by the transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

Purpose: Work-related asthma (WRA) occupies about 10%–30% of all asthma cases. Among 2 subtypes of WRA (occupational asthma [OA] and work-exacerbated asthma [WEA]), the rate of WEA has been reported to increase recently. WRA is described as having worse characteristics than non-WRA (NWRA), while WEA is known to show similar severity to OA in terms of symptoms and exacerbations. However, these data were mainly based on indirect surveys. Ulsan is a highly industrialized city in Korea; therefore, it is estimated to have a high incidence of WRA. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of WRA in the city. Methods: This was a prospective asthma cohort study of individuals diagnosed with asthma and treated at Ulsan University Hospital between Jan 2015 and Dec 2016. Baseline characteristics and work-related inquiry (9 questionnaires) were investigated at enrollment. Various severity indices and job change were then investigated for the longitudinal analysis at 12 months after enrollment. Results: In total, 217 asthma patients completed the study. WRA accounted for 17% (36/217), with an equal number of WEA and OA (18 patients each). Before the work-related survey, only 33% (n = 12) of WRA patients (22% [4/18] of WEA and 44% [8/18] of OA) were diagnosed with WRA by the attending physicians. Compared to the NWRA group and the OA subgroup, the WEA subgroup had more outpatient visits, more oral corticosteroids prescriptions, and trends of low asthma control test scores and severe asthma. The rate of job change was markedly lower in the WEA subgroup than in the OA subgroup (20% vs. 5%). Conclusions: The overall prevalence of WRA (17%) was similar to those of previous studies, but the share of WEA was high (50% of WRA). WEA was more severe than OA or NWRA. The possible reason for this severity is ongoing workplace exposure.

Carbon ions and protons from a double-layer target, a copper foil coated with a polymer exhibit non-Maxwellian spectral shapes, when an ultra-intense laser pulse with a high temporal contrast ratio was focused on the metal side of the target. The spectral shapes, showing strong reduction of low-energy ions, a high-energy island, and a modulated structure, are diferent from a typical thermal distribution usually obtained from a pure metal target in the laser acceleration of ions. In the case of C6+ ion, a high-energy island with an energy spread of 0.5 MeV/u was observed, which is separated from the low-energy spectrum by 0.2 MeV/u. A modulation in the proton energy spectrum was observed, which leads to a secondary peak at 2.2 MeV/u in addition to a peak at a low energy of 1.5 MeV/u. The maximum energy obtained from the double-layer target at a laser intensity of 3 × 1020 W/cm2 is 3.4 MeV/u for C6+ ions and 10 MeV/u for protons, which are higher than those obtained from a single metal foil by factors of 1.7 and 1.3, respectively. Such a spectral shape and energy enhancement could be accounted for by a bulk electrostatic feld formed at the metal-polymer interface and multi-species interactions. These results show that the spectral shape of the ion beam can be tailored with an adequate structure of micrometer-thick target.

Taurine is a type of sulfur-containing amino acid having a sulfate functional group, that is biosynthesized from cyste- ine. It is mainly distributed in high concentrations in animal tissues and is known to have various effects such as osmotic pres- sure control, calcium control, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and hepatocellular protection. Also, taurine deficiency causes a variety of symptoms, including visual impairment. In particular, in the case of cats, taurine is not biosynthesized and must be supplied through food, so it is classified as an essential amino acid. In this study, an analysis method using mass spectrometry was developed instead of the commonly used derivatization method to quickly, environmentally, and precisely analyze taurine in various animal feeds. The developed analytical method showed good linearity (R 2 > 0.99), accuracy (81.97-105.78%), and pre- cision (0.07-12.37%). In addition, the developed method was further verified through quantitative comparison with the derivat- ization method. This developed method was used in the determination of taurine in 20 animal feed samples obtained from South Korea. The levels of taurine found ranged from 81.53 to 6,743.53 mg/kg. The developed analysis method will be used for the detection and quantification of taurine in domestic feed.
