Protective effect of Rehmannia glutinosa on the UV-induced apoptosis in U937 cells.
Shin, Seoung Woo,Park, Chan Ik,Yang, Chae Ha,Park, Jeen-Woo Institute for Advanced Research in Asian Science a 2008 The American journal of Chinese medicine Vol.36 No.6
<P>Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been shown to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as singlet oxygen, superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxide in a variety of cells. These ROS have the potential to damage critical cellular components such as DNA, proteins, and lipids and eventually result in physical and chemical damage to tissues that may lead to cell death. The steamed root of Rehmannia glutinosa (Saeng Jihuang, SJH) is reported to have an antioxidant activity. We investigated the effect of SJH on UV-induced apoptosis in U937 cells. Upon exposure to UV, there was a distinct difference between untreated cells and cells pre-treated with 0.5-2 mg/ml SJH for 12 hours in regard to cellular redox status and morphological change to cells. SJH pre-treated cells showed significant suppression of apoptotic features such as DNA fragmentation, damage to mitochondrial function, and modulation of apoptotic marker proteins upon exposure to UV. This study indicates that SJH may play an important role in regulating the apoptosis induced by UV presumably through scavenging of reactive oxygen species.</P>
Anti-skin Aging Effect of Pleurotus citrinopileatus Extracts
Seoung-Woo Shin(신승우),Hyea-Jung Koh(고혜정),Eun-Sun Jung(정은선) 한국화장품미용학회 2018 한국화장품미용학회지 Vol.8 No.3
To develop a new functional agent for cosmetics, we investigated the anti-aging activities in fibroblasts using Pleurotus citrinopileatus extracts. The antioxidant activities of Pleurotus citrinopileatus extracts (PCE) were determined by using four different methods, namely, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assay, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assay and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay. And antioxidant effect of PCE was evaluated by estimating its protective effects against the oxidative stress induced by H₂O₂ on HDFs. PCE showed radical scavenging and cytoprotective activity against oxidative stress in a dose dependent manner. PCE additionally prevented the elevation of MMP-1 and reduction of Type I collagen (COL1A1) induced by H₂O₂. Theses finding indicated that PCE protects HDFs from H₂O₂-induced damage by antioxidant activity and therefore can be used as an anti aging agent.
Glutathionylation regulates cytosolic NADP+-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase activity.
Shin, Seoung Woo,Oh, Chang Joo,Kil, In Sup,Park, Jeen-Woo Harwood Academic ; Distributed by STBS Ltd 2009 Free radical research Vol.43 No.4
<P>Cytosolic NADP+-dependent isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDPc) is susceptible to inactivation by numerous thiol-modifying reagents. This study now reports that Cys269 of IDPc is a target for S-glutathionylation and that this modification is reversed by dithiothreitol as well as enzymatically by cytosolic glutaredoxin in the presence of GSH. Glutathionylated IDPc was significantly less susceptible than native protein to peptide fragmentation by reactive oxygen species and proteolytic digestion. Glutathionylation may play a protective role in the degradation of protein through the structural alterations of IDPc. HEK293 cells treated with diamide displayed decreased IDPc activity and accumulated glutathionylated enzyme. Using immunoprecipitation with an anti-IDPc IgG and immunoblotting with an anti-GSH IgG, we purified and positively identified glutathionylated IDPc from the kidneys of mice subjected to ischemia/reperfusion injury and from the livers of ethanol-administered rats. These results suggest that IDPc activity is modulated through enzymatic glutathionylation and deglutathionylation during oxidative stress.</P>

Background Mastectomy leaves unsightly scarring, which can be distressing to patients. Laser therapy for scar prevention has been consistently emphasized in recent studies showing that several types of lasers, including fractional ablation lasers, are effective for reducing scar formation. Nonetheless, there are few studies evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of ablative CO2 fractional lasers (ACFLs). Methods This study had a randomized, comparative, prospective, split-scar design with blinded evaluation of mastectomy scars. Fifteen patients with mastectomy scars were treated using an ACFL. Half of each scar was randomized to "A," while the other side was allocated to group "B." Laser treatment was conducted randomly. Scars were assessed using digital photographs of the scar and Vancouver scar scale (VSS) scores. Histological assessments were also done. Results The mean VSS scores were 2.20±1.28 for the treatment side and 2.96±1.40 for the control side. There was a significant difference in the VSS score between the treatment side and the control side (P=0.002). The mean visual analog scale (VAS) scores were 4.13±1.36 for the treatment side and 4.67±1.53 for the control side. There was a significant difference in VAS score between the treatment side and the control side (P=0.02). Conclusions This study demonstrated that early scar treatment using an ACFL significantly improved the clinical results of the treatment compared to the untreated scar, and this difference was associated with patient satisfaction.

Antiphospholipid antibodies may be produced in cases involving autoimmune diseases and can sometimes be caused by infections, such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection. However, antiphospholipid antibodies causing thrombosis associated with M. pneumoniae pneumonia in children have rarely been reported. We report a case of an 8-year-old boy with M. pneumoniae pneumonia with antiphospholipid antibodies, complicated by brachial artery thrombosis. He was found to have antiphospholipid antibodies and low protein S levels. The brachial artery thrombus was removed via thrombectomy. The titers of antiphospholipid antibodies turned normal within 5 months. This is a rare case of M. pneumoniae infection with brachial artery thrombosis associated with transient antiphospholipid antibodies.

Synthesis process from the data produced by different types of sensor into a single information is being studied and used in a variety of platforms in terms of multi-sensor data fusion. Heterogeneous sensors has been integrated into various aircraft and modern avionic systems manage them. As the performance of sensors in aircraft is getting higher, the integration of sensor information is required from the viewpoint of avionics gradually. Information fusion is not studied widely in the view of software that provide a pilot with fused information from data produced by the sensor in the form of symbology on a display device. The purpose of information fusion is to assist pilots to make a decision in order to perform mission by providing the correct combat situation from avionics of the aircraft and to minimize their workload consequently. In the aircraft avionics equipped with different types of sensors, the software architecture that produce a comprehensive information using the sensor data through multi-sensor data fusion process to the user is shown in this paper.

Park, Seoung Woo,Yoon, Soo Han,Cho, Ki Hong,Shin, Yong Sam,Ahn, Young Hwan Lippincott Williams Wilkins, Inc. 2007 1528-1159) Vol.32 No.1
STUDY DESIGN.: Clinical case report of a spinal subdural abscess in an infant presenting with sacral dermal sinus tract (DST). OBJECTIVES.: To suggest that sacral DST with caudal direction may require surgical resection as early as possible. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA.: DST may induce the formation of a spinal abscess. However, it is sometimes difficult to decide on early surgical resection for DST, especially in cases that are located at a lower level than the lumbar spine and directed caudally that is not accompanied by cerebrospinal fluid leakage. METHODS.: A 9-month-old girl was transferred due to intermittent fever and vomiting, with the midline sinus of the lower back at the second sacral spinal level. She showed mild tenderness of the lower back and slight weakness of both lower extremities with increased residual urine volume of the bladder. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed that the low-lying sacral DST traced into the subdural space with caudal orientation, and the presence of extensive subdural spinal abscess from the first lumbar spine to the fourth sacrum. RESULTS.: Emergency resection of the sacral DST was performed after laminotomy from the first lumbar spine to the second sacrum, and the subdural spinal abscess was also surgically removed. After 8 weeks of intravenous antibiotic treatment, she showed no neurologic deficit and no evidence of residual abscess on MRI. CONCLUSION.: We suggest that even low-lying sacral DST may require surgical resection as early as possible because it may result in indolent and extensive spinal abscesses.

It is difficult to make an accurate estimate of the economic value and effects on societal economy of Nano-technologies. This research measures an economic value of Nano-technologies quantitatively and analyzes its influences on societal economy. This paper chooses some major industries as analysis targets and adapts the DEFRA comparative methodology model which has been developed in the UK and recommended by OECD. For this reason, some industries which are in range of economic value assessment were investigated and related data were collected. Also, the economic value and societal influences of Nano-technologies were calculated, through the procedure of the model. In addition, this study conducts a questionnaire to experts for the validity of measurement results and procedures. This paper suggests a guideline for economic value and effects on societal economy of Nano-technologies assessments through quantitative Defra comparative methodologies.
