Purpose: The Trastuzumab for gastric cancer (GC) trial identified human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) as a predictor of successful treatment with trastuzumab (HER2 receptor targeting agent) among patients with advanced/metastatic GC. To date, the prevalence of HER2 overexpression in the Korean population is unknown. The present study aimed to assess the incidence of HER2 positivity among GC and gastroesophageal (GE) junction cancer samples and the relationship between HER2 overexpression and clinicopathological characteristics in Korean patients. Materials and Methods: Tumor samples collected from 1,695 patients with histologically proven GC or GE junction enrolled at 14 different hospitals in Korea were examined. After gathering clinicopathological data of all patients, HER2 status was assessed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) at each hospital, and IHC 2+ cases were subjected to silver-enhanced in situ hybridization at 3 central laboratories. Results: A total of 182 specimens tested positive for HER2, whereas 1,505 tested negative. Therefore, the overall HER2-positive rate in this study was 10.8% (95% confidence interval=9.3%-12.3%). The HER2-positive rate was higher among intestinal-type cases (17.6%) than among other types, and was higher among patients older than 70 years and 50 years of age, compared to other age groups. Conclusions: Our evaluation of the HER2 positivity rate (10.8%) among Korean patients with GC and GE junction indicated the necessity of epidemiological data when conducting studies related to HER2 expression in GC and GE junction.
Using $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT to Detect an Occult Mesenchymal Tumor Causing Oncogenic Osteomalacia

Oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by renal phosphate excretion, hypophosphatemia, and osteomalacia. This syndrome is often caused by tumors of mesenchymal origin. Patients with oncogenic osteomalacia have abnormal bone mineralization, resulting in a high frequency of fractures. Tumor resection is the treatment of choice, as it will often correct the metabolic imbalance. Although oncogenic osteomalacia is a potentially curable disease, diagnosis is difficult and often delayed because of the small size and sporadic location of the tumor. Bone scintigraphy and radiography best characterize osteomalacia; magnetic resonance imaging findings are nonspecific. Here, we report a case of oncogenic osteomalacia secondary to a phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor that was successfully detected by $^{18}F$-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography ($^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT). This case illustrates the advantages of $^{18}F$-FDG PET/CT in detecting the occult mesenchymal tumor that causes oncogenic osteomalacia.
An Inserted Epitaxial Layer for SiC Single Crystal Growth by the Physical Vapor Transport Method
Seo, Jung Doo,An, Joon Ho,Kim, Jung Gon,Kim, Jung Kyu,Kyun, Myung Ok,Lee, Won Jae,Kim, Il Soo,Shin, Byoung Chul,Ku, Kap Ryeol Trans Tech Publications, Ltd. 2007 Materials science forum Vol.556 No.-

SiC single crystal ingots were prepared onto different seed material using sublimation PVT techniques and then their crystal quality was systematically compared. In this study, the conventional SiC seed material and the new SiC seed material with an inserted SiC epitaxial layer on a seed surface were used as a seed for SiC bulk growth. The inserted epitaxial layer was grown by a sublimation epitaxy method called the CST with a low growth rate of 2μm/h. N-type 2”-SiC single crystals exhibiting the polytype of 6H-SiC were successfully fabricated and carrier concentration levels of below 1017/cm3 were determined from the absorption spectrum and Hall measurements. The slightly higher growth rate and carrier concentration were obtained in SiC single crystal ingot grown on new SiC seed materials with the inserted epitaxial layer on the seed surface, maintaining the high quality.

Voluntary stand-up physical activity enhances endurance exercise capacity in rats

Involuntary physical activity induced by the avoidance of electrical shock leads to improved endurance exercise capacity in animals. However, it remains unknown whether voluntary stand-up physical activity (SPA) without forced simulating factors improves endurance exercise capacity in animals. We examined the effects of SPA on body weight, cardiac function, and endurance exercise capacity for 12 weeks. Twelve male Sprague-Dawley rats (aged 8 weeks, n=6 per group) were randomly assigned to a control group (CON) or a voluntary SPA group. The rats were induced to perform voluntary SPA (lifting a load equal to their body weight), while the food height (18.0 cm) in cages was increased progressively by 3.5 every 4 weeks until it reached 28.5 cm for 12 weeks. The SPA group showed a lower body weight compared to the CON group, but voluntary SPA did not affect the skeletal muscle and heart weights, food intake, and echocardiography results. Although the SPA group showed higher grip strength, running time, and distance compared to the CON group, the level of irisin, corticosterone, genetic expression of mitochondrial biogenesis, and nuclei numbers were not affected. These findings show that voluntary SPA without any forced stimuli in rats can effectively reduce body weight and enhance endurance exercise capacity, suggesting that it may be an important alternative strategy to enhance endurance exercise capacity.
