Obesity has become a major health threat in developed countries. However, current medications for obesity are limited because of their adverse effects. Interest in natural products for the treatment of obesity is thus rapidly growing. Korean Medicine (KM) is characterized by the wide use of herbal formulas. However, the combination rule of herbal formulas in KM lacks experimental evidence. According to Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, the earliest book of herbal medicine, Veratrum nigrum (VN) has antagonistic features against Panax ginseng (PG), and the PG-VN pair is strictly forbidden. In this study, we have shown the effects of PG, VN, and their combination on obesity in high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese mice and in 3T3-L1 cells. PG, VN, and PG-VN combination significantly reduced weight gain and the fat pad weight in HF diet-induced obese mice. They also significantly decreased lipid accumulation and the expressions of two major adipogenesis factors, PPARγ and C/EBPα, in 3T3-L1 cells. In addition, the PG-VN combination had synergistic effects compared with the mixture of extracts of PG and VN on inhibition of PPARγ and C/EBPα expressions at lower doses. These results indicate a new potential anti-obese pharmacotherapy and also provide scientific evidence supporting the usage of herbal combinations instead of mixtures in KM.

Um, Bu-Yong,Kim, Jong-Ryul,Kim, Sang-Hoon,Lee, Jae-Hoon,Cheon, Jimin,Choi, Jaehyuk,Chun, Jung-Hoon The Institute of Electronics and Information Engin 2017 Journal of semiconductor technology and science Vol.17 No.1
This paper describes a CMOS image sensor (CIS) with dual correlated double sampling (CDS) and column-parallel analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and its measurement method using a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) integrated module. The CIS is composed of a $320{\times}240$ pixel array with $3.2{\mu}m{\times}3.2{\mu}m$ pixels and column-parallel 10-bit single-slope ADCs. It is fabricated in a $0.11-{\mu}m$ CIS process, and consumes 49.2 mW from 1.5 V and 3.3 V power supplies while operating at 6.25 MHz. The measured dynamic range is 53.72 dB, and the total and column fixed pattern noise in a dark condition are 0.10% and 0.029%. The maximum integral nonlinearity and the differential nonlinearity of the ADC are +1.15 / -1.74 LSB and +0.63 / -0.56 LSB, respectively.

Biomass Waste, Coffee Grounds-derived Carbon for Lithium Storage
Um, Ji Hyun,Kim, Yunok,Ahn, Chi-Yeong,Kim, Jinsoo,Sung, Yung-Eun,Cho, Yong-Hun,Kim, Seung-Soo,Yoon, Won-Sub The Korean Electrochemical Society 2018 Journal of electrochemical science and technology Vol.9 No.3
Biomass waste-derived carbon is an attractive alternative with environmental benignity to obtain carbon material. In this study, we prepare carbon from coffee grounds as a biomass precursor using a simple, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly method through physical activation using only steam. The coffee-derived carbon, having a micropore-rich structure and a low extent of graphitization of disordered carbon, is developed and directly applied to lithium-ion battery anode material. Compared with the introduction of the Ketjenblack (KB) conducting agent (i.e., coffee-derived carbon with KB), the coffee-derived carbon itself achieves a reversible capacity of ~200 mAh/g (0.54 lithium per 6 carbons) at a current density of 100 mA/g after 100 cycles, along with excellent cycle stability. The origin of highly reversible lithium storage is attributed to the consistent diffusion-controlled intercalation/de-intercalation reaction in cycle life, which suggests that the bulk diffusion of lithium is favorable in the coffee-derived carbon itself, in the absence of a conducting agent. This study presents the preparation of carbon material through physical activation without the use of chemical activation agents and demonstrates an application of coffee-derived carbon in energy storage devices.

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) has been used widely to treat patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. However, this method can induce various adverse events caused by necrosis of the tumor itself or damage to nontumor tissues. In particular, neurologic side effects such as cerebral infarction and paraplegia, although rare, may cause severe sequelae and permanent disability. Detailed information regarding the treatment process and prognosis associated with this procedure is not yet available. We experienced a case of paraplegia that occurred after conducting TACE through the intercostal artery to treat hepatocellular carcinoma that had metastasized to the rib. In this case, TACE was attempted to relieve severe bone pain, which had persisted even after palliative radiotherapy. A sudden impairment of sensory and motor functions after TACE developed in the trunk below the level of the sternum and in both lower extremities. The patient subsequently received steroid pulse therapy along with supportive care and continuous rehabilitation. At the time of discharge the patient had recovered suffi ciently to enable him to walk by himself, although some paresthesia and spasticity remained. (Clin Mol Hepatol 2012;18:316-320)

Background/Aims: Endoscopic mucosal resection can cure early gastric cancer. The risk of lymphatic metastasis is related to the depth of submucosal invasion by the mucosal malignancy, with a resection depth of 500 μm generally accepted as a safe cut-off. However, excessive thinning induced by stretching of the resected tissue sometimes preventing a precise diagnosis. We studied the effects of stretching on different layers and sites of gastric tissue. Methods: Porcine stomachs were cut into 2.0×2.0 cm pieces, and pieces from body were stretched to 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 cm. Pieces from the cardia, body, and antrum were also stretched to 3.0 cm. The thickness of each layer was measured and analyzed statistically. Results: Whole gastric wall and submucosal layers showed gradual thinning, with stretching to 3.5 cm tearing the tissues and resulting in imperfect extension. The submucosa was thinner in body tissue than in cardia and antrum tissues. Stretching to 3.0 cm induced a consistent decrease in submucosal thickness (30-70%). The change in thickness varied widely between individual samples. Conclusions: A resection margin of 500μm might be insufficient for the complete removal of malignancy. Moreover, the thickness of the submucosal layer differs with the gastric site and between individuals. Future studies are needed to confirm the findings in human tissue. (Gut and Liver 2008;2:199-204)
