Background: To meet the need for a subspecialized skin type system, the Baumann skin type (BST) system was proposed. Objective: To evaluate the distribution of BST types and influencing factors among Korean women. Methods: BST questionnaires were administered to 1,000 Korean women. The possible responses were as follows: oily (O) or dry (D), sensitive (S) or resistant (R), pigmented (P) or non-pigmented (N), and wrinkled (W) or tight (T). The correlations of the BST with the subjects` age, location, ultraviolet (UV) ray exposure, drinking and smoking habits, and blood type were assessed. Results: The OSNT, DSNT, DRNT, and OSNW skin types were the most common skin types (55.3%). The O, S, P, and W types accounted for 46.6%, 68.8%, 23.2%, and 31.9%, respectively. The proportion of the O and S type was the highest in Gyeongsangbuk-do (55.0%) and Seoul (77.2%). The proportion of the P and W type was the highest in Gyeongsangbuk-do (33.0%) and Chungcheong-do (39.0%). The O type decreased in the higher age group, whereas the P and W type showed a reversed tendency. In smokers, the proportion of W type was significantly higher than in the non-smokers (66.3% vs. 24.1%, p<0.05). Conclusion: The 4 most common BST types were OSNT, DSNT, DRNT, and OSNW. In the comparison across the 4 BST parameters according to the age, region, smoking and drinking habits, occupation, blood type, and UV exposure, significant differences were observed. Individualized and customized skin care is required according to the personal skin type. (Ann Dermatol 29(5) 586∼596, 2017)

Lee, Yu-Na,Lee, Dong-Hun,Park, Jae-Keun,Lim, Tae-Hyun,Youn, Ha-Na,Yuk, Seong-Su,Lee, Youn-Jeong,Mo, In-phil,Sung, Haan-Woo,Lee, Joong-Bok,Park, Seung-Yong,Choi, In-Soo,Song, Chang-Seon American Association of Avian Pathologists [etc.] 2011 Avian diseases Vol.55 No.4
<P>An outbreak of avian influenza, caused by an H9N2 low-pathogenic avian influenza virus (AIV), occurred in a chicken farm and caused severe economic losses due to mortality and diarrhea. AIV was isolated and identified in a sample from an affected native Korean chicken. Genetic analysis of the isolate revealed a high sequence similarity to genes of novel reassortant H9N2 viruses isolated from slaughterhouses and live bird markets in Korea in 2008 and 2009. Animal challenge studies demonstrated that the replication kinetics and pathogenicity of the isolate were considerably altered due to adaptation in chickens. Vaccine protection studies indicated that commercial vaccine was not able to prevent virus shedding and clinical disease when chickens were challenged with the isolate. These results suggest that the novel H9N2 virus possesses the capacity to replicate efficiently in the respiratory system against vaccination and to cause severe disease in domestic chickens. The results also highlight the importance of appropriate updating of vaccine strains, based on continuous surveillance data, to prevent the possibility of a new H9N2 epidemic in Korea.</P>

Caspases are a family of cysteine proteases that play an important role in the apoptotic pathway. Caspase-6 is an apoptosis effector that cleaves a variety of cellular substrates. The active form of the enzyme is required for use in research. However, it has been difficult to obtain sufficient quantities of active caspase-6 from Escherichia coli. In the present study, we constructed a caspase-6 with a 23-amino-acid deletion in the pro-domain. This engineered enzyme was expressed as a soluble protein in E. coli and was purified using affinity resin. In vitro enzyme assay and cleavage analysis revealed that the engineered active caspase-6 protein had characteristics similar to those of wild-type caspase-6. This novel method can be a valuable tool for obtaining active caspase-6 that can be used for screening caspase-6-specific substrates, which in turn can be used to elucidate the function of caspase-6 in apoptosis.
Zinc Chloride Toxicity on Free Proline and Organic Acids in Germinating Rice Seed

The study was conducted to find the critical concentrations of zinc toxicity and to determine the changes of the contents of free proline and organic acids with treatment of different zinc chloride concentrations during rice germination and seedlings grown for seven days. The concentration of zinc chloride, 140 ppm, inhibited root elongation as much as 46 times compared with the control, and the germination rate was also decreased in all treatments of zinc chloride, showing that the germination rate decreased more with increasing concentrations of zinc chloride. Its rate was only 13% with treatment of 140 ppm zinc chloride. The content of free proline with treatment of zinc chloride, 140 ppm, was highest about 4,873 ~mu M at 3 days compared with the control. Malic acid concentration with treatment of zinc chloride, 140 ppm, increased to approximately 4 times compared to the control. Citric and succinic acid content were also slightly increased in all treatments of zinc chloride

<P>In the present study, we investigated the ex vivo expansion of human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ATSCs) to identify factors that promoted efficient expansion while preserving stem cell potential. We examined several growth factors and steroids, and found that the combination of a low concentration of fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) (1 ng/mL) and dexamethasone (DEX) or betamethasone (BET) enhanced the proliferation of ATSCs by approximately 30-60% as compared to control. Enhanced proliferation under these conditions was confirmed using ATSCs isolated from three independent donors. ATSCs that were expanded in the presence of FGF-2 and DEX for 5 days were capable of differentiating into either osteoblastic or adipogenic cells, and the cells were positive for the mesenchymal stem cell markers such as CD29, CD44, CD90, CD105, and CD146, suggesting that the stem cell potential of the ATSCs was preserved. Analysis of signaling pathway revealed that tyrosine phosphorylation of Src kinase was dramatically increased in response to FGF-2 and DEX, suggesting the involvement of Src-dependent pathways in the stimulatory mechanism of proliferation of ATSCs by FGF-2 and DEX. Moreover, Src family kinase inhibitors (SU6656 and Src kinase inhibitor I) substantially reduced the FGF-2 and DEX-induced proliferation of ATSCs. SU6656 also inhibited the osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation of ATSCs. The results of the current study demonstrate that FGF-2 in combination with DEX stimulates the proliferation and osteoblastic and adipogenic differentiation of ATSCs through a Src-dependent mechanism, and that FGF-2 and DEX promote the efficient ex vivo expansion of ATSCs.</P>
A case of cutaneous myiasis associated with basal cell carcinoma on the scalp
( Sung Eun Song ),( Young Uk Kim ),( Seung Woo Lee ),( Kea Jeung Kim ),( Joon Hong Min ),( Eun Phil Heo ) 대한피부과학회 2015 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.67 No.1
Cutaneous myiasis is the infestation of skin by larvae of different fly species within the arthropod order Diptera. There are two main clinical presentations of cutaneous myiasis: wound and furuncular. The treatment of cutaneous myiasis involves usage of anti-larval measures promoting larval asphyxia and inducing them to exit from the wound, followed by mechanical removal of the larvae.Larvae rupture must be avoided. In larger lesions, or when there is adjacent cellulitis, removal of devitalized tissue is recommended. A broad antibiotics cover is recommended to prevent secondary infections. A 78-year-old Korean woman presented with a ulcerative and hemorrhagic scalp mass which in some parts is covered by larvae. The larvae were mechanically removed, and the biopsy of the ulcerative scalp mass confirmed the diagnosis of adenoid type basal cell carcinoma. The patient was referred to plastic surgeon for resection and graft of the basal cell carcinoma on the scalp. Cutaneous myiasis has rarely been reported in skin tumors such as basal cell carcinoma. So, we report a case of cutaneous myiasis associated with basal cell carcinoma on the scalp.
Underwater Navigation of AUVs Using Uncorrelated Measurement Error Model of USBL
Lee, Pan-Mook,Park, Jin-Yeong,Baek, Hyuk,Kim, Sea-Moon,Jun, Bong-Huan,Kim, Ho-Sung,Lee, Phil-Yeob Korean Society of Ocean Engineers 2022 韓國海洋工學會誌 Vol.36 No.5
This article presents a modeling method for the uncorrelated measurement error of the ultra-short baseline (USBL) acoustic positioning system for aiding navigation of underwater vehicles. The Mahalanobis distance (MD) and principal component analysis are applied to decorrelate the errors of USBL measurements, which are correlated in the x- and y-directions and vary according to the relative direction and distance between a reference station and the underwater vehicles. The proposed method can decouple the radial-direction error and angular direction error from each USBL measurement, where the former and latter are independent and dependent, respectively, of the distance between the reference station and the vehicle. With the decorrelation of the USBL errors along the trajectory of the vehicles in every time step, the proposed method can reduce the threshold of the outlier decision level. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, simulation studies were performed with motion data obtained from a field experiment involving an autonomous underwater vehicle and USBL signals generated numerically by matching the specifications of a specific USBL with the data of a global positioning system. The simulations indicated that the navigation system is more robust in rejecting outliers of the USBL measurements than conventional ones. In addition, it was shown that the erroneous estimation of the navigation system after a long USBL blackout can converge to the true states using the MD of the USBL measurements. The navigation systems using the uncorrelated error model of the USBL, therefore, can effectively eliminate USBL outliers without loss of uncontaminated signals.
