Cells express several antioxidant enzymes to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for oxidative damages and various human diseases. Therefore, antioxidant enzymes are considered biomedicine candidates. Among them, extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD3) had showed prominent efficacy against asthma and inflammation. Despite its advantages as a biomedicine, the difficulty in obtaining large quantity of active recombinant human SOD3 (rhSOD3) has limited its clinical applications. We found that a significant fraction of overexpressed rhSOD3 was composed of the inactive apo-enzyme and its potency against inflammation depended on the rate of metal incorporation. Also, purified rhSOD3 was unstable and lost its activity very quickly. Here, we suggest an ideal preparative method to express, purify, and store highly active rhSOD3. The enzymatic activity of rhSOD3 was maximized by incorporating metal ions into rhSOD3 after purification. Also, albumin or polyethylene glycol prevented rapid inactivation or degradation of rhSOD3 during preparative procedures and long-term storage. [BMB Reports 2015; 48(2): 91-96]

Background/Aims: To evaluate the diagnostic value of contrast (SonoVue®) enhancement ultrasonography (CEUS) and to compare this method with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in evaluating liver masses. Methods: CEUS (n=50), CT (n=47), and MRI (n=43) were performed on 50 liver masses in 48 patients for baseline mass characterization. The most likely impression for each modality and the final diagnosis, based on the combined biopsy results (n=14), angiography findings (n=36), and clinical course, were determined. The diagnostic value of CEUS was compared to those of CT and MRI. Results: The final diagnosis of the masses was hepatocellular carcinoma (n=43), hemangioma (n=3), benign adenoma (n=2), eosinophilic abscess (n=1), and liver metastasis (n=1). The overall diagnostic agreement with the final diagnosis was substantial for CEUS, CT, and MRI, with κ values of 0.621, 0.763, and 0.784, respectively. The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy were 83.3%, 87.5%, and 84.0%, respectively, for CEUS; 95.0%, 87.5%, and 93.8%, respectively, for CT; and 94.6%, 83.3%, and 93.0%, respectively for MRI. After excluding the lesions with poor acoustic sonographic windows, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy for CEUS were 94.6%, 87.5%, and 93.3%, respectively, with a κ value of 0.765. Conclusions: If an appropriate acoustic window is available, CEUS is comparable to CT and MRI for the diagnosis of liver masses.

This paper describes design and characteristic analysis of long primary type linear synchronous motor (LSM) for high speed train system. LSM is designed using loading distribution method and magnetic equivalent circuit. For characteristic analysis of LSM, analytical and numerical methods are applied. Analytical method for solving the magnetic field distribution of the analytic model is based on the Maxwell’s equations. Using the characteristic equation and magnetic equivalent circuit, we analyze the effect of variation of parameters, and then we validate the result by comparing with numerical method by finite element method (FEM). We compare the analytical method with numerical method for analyzing the effect by variable parameters. This result will be useful of design and forecast of performance without FEM.

Bismuth telluride (Bi(2)Te(3)) nanowires are of great interest as nanoscale building blocks for high-efficiency thermoelectric devices. Their low-dimensional character leads to an enhanced figure-of-merit (ZT), an indicator of thermoelectric efficiency. Herein, we report the invention of a direct growth method termed On-Film Formation of Nanowires (OFF-ON) for making high-quality single-crystal compound semiconductor nanowires, that is, Bi(2)Te(3), without the use of conventional templates, catalysts, or starting materials. We have used the OFF-ON technique to grow single crystal compound semiconductor Bi(2)Te(3) nanowires from sputtered BiTe films after thermal annealing at 350 degrees C. The mechanism for wire growth is stress-induced mass flow along grain boundaries in the polycrystalline film. OFF-ON is a simple but powerful method for growing perfect single-crystal compound semiconductor nanowires of high aspect ratio with high crystallinity that distinguishes it from other competitive growth approaches that have been developed to date.

Freshwater Benthic Macroinvertebrate Fauna of Jindo Island, Korea
Sung Hwan Park,Christine Jewel C. Uy,Hak Myeong Baek,Daseul Ham,Sang Woo Seok,Yong Lak Jeon,Yeon Jae Bae 한국동물분류학회 2016 Korean Journal of Systematic Zoology Special Issue Vol.- No.9
Freshwater benthic macroinvertebrates were investigated from five sampling sites on Jindo Island located in the southwestern end of the Korean Peninsula. A total of 47 species (average 14±3.16 species per site, 40 species in lotic area, and 13 species in lentic area) belonging to 38 families, 14 orders, 5 classes, and 3 phyla were sampled. Coleoptera, Diptera, Ephemeroptera, and Trichoptera were the major groups of benthic macroinvertebrates with relatively high species richness. Species diversity indices (H′) and richness indices (RI) of upper streams were relatively higher than those of lower streams, which were affected by agricultural effluent from the paddy fields.

In this paper, linear induction motor is analyzed by 3-D finite-element method (3-D FEM) to consider influence of construction of secondary reaction plate on the transverse edge effect. A effective 3-D analysis model for considering the transverse edge effect caused by the finite widths of the primary and the secondary is not only proposed, but also the simple method measuring the transverse edge effect by using the patterns of currents induced in the secondary reaction plate is proposed. With this effective analysis method, various models with overhang and cap have been analyzed to consider the relationship between the construction of secondary reaction plate and the transverse edge effect.

Abstract

Rice bran is a byproduct of the rice milling process. It contains high levels of bioactive phytochemicals such as phytosterols, tocopherols, tocotrienols, γ-oryzanol, triterpene alcohol, and other minor compounds, which have antioxidant and health-promoting properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the?protective effect of unsaponifiable matter (USM) from rice bran against oxidative damages induced by tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) in HepG2 cells. Levels of cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), cellular lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione (GSH), and antioxidant enzyme activity were evaluated as biomarkers of the cellular oxidative status. HepG2 cells were pretreated with various concentrations of USM (0–100?μg/mL) for 12?h prior to TBHP exposure. Pretreatment of HepG2 cells with USM prevented the cell damage induced by TBHP in a dose-dependent manner. Cellular generation of ROS, formation of malondialdehyde (MDA), and depletion of GSH induced by TBHP were prevented by pretreatment with USM. In addition, treatment with TBHP increased the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione reductase. However, pretreatment with USM significantly reduced the activities of these enzymes. These results indicate that treatment of HepG2 cells with USM confers significant protection against oxidative damage by modulating ROS production, GSH levels, and antioxidant enzyme activity.

Highlights

Unsaponifiable matter (USM) was prepared from rice bran.

USM prevented the cell damage in a dose-dependent manner.

Oxidative changes induced by oxidative stress were prevented by USM.

USM significantly modulated antioxidant enzyme activities of HepG2 cells.
