        이상설 : 한국 근대수학교육의 아버지

        본 논문은 한국수학사에서 연구와 정리가 취약한 시기인 근대수학의 도입기를 조사하면서, 그 근대수학의 도입기에서 만나게 되는 인물인 이상설(李相卨)에 대한 조명을 시도한다. 시대적 상황이 모든 분야의 침체기를 가져온 구한말 이상설은 근대수학에서 당대를 대표하는 높은 학식을 쌓고 뛰어난 재능을 보여주었다. 그간 이상설에 대해 '근대수학교육의 아버지'라는 평가가 없지 않았음에도 불구하고 낯설게 느껴진다면, 그것은 그가 독립운동가로만 강하게 각인된 탓일 것이다. 하지만 그는 19세기말 조선 근대수학의 첫 번째 교과서 편저자이자 수학교사이기도 했음을 새겨둘 필요가 있다. 대유학자이면서도 선구적으로 외국어와 서양과학 특히 근대 서양수학을 이해한 면모는 한국이 배출한 천재 중 하나라는 평가가 결코 과장이 아님을 보여준다. 이에 본 논문에서는 한국 근대수학교육에 커다란 기여를 한 인물인 이상설의 교육과 학문 및 실천업적을 조명한다. 보재 이상설이 1886년경에 쓴 책 <수리>와 최초로 수학과 과학을 관립교육기관의 교육과정에 편성한 과정, 최초의 근대수학교과서로 여겨지는 <산술신서>의 발간, 민족교육기관인 '서전서숙'의 설립 및 운영을 포함한 보재의 업적을 한국수학사 관점에서 조명한다. 또한 <산술신서>의 목차와 구체적인 내용 및 1901년에 출간된 <신정산술>의 내용을 소개하고, 지금까지 부정확하게 알려진 <수리>와 <산술신서>에 관한 몇 가지 역사적 사실을 발굴하여 재조명한다. Most who have heard of Sang-Seol Lee know him for his contribution to the Korean independence movement nearly a hundred years ago. This paper, however, will discuss Lee's other great contribution to his country; that of being "The father of modern mathematical education in Korea". Lee passed the rigorous government officer examination with the highest honor and became a teacher for the royal prince. Later he became the president of Sunkyunkwan, a national institute of higher learning since 1398, and eventually a well-known university bearing the same name. Lee was also a highly regarded Confucian scholar and well versed in foreign languages. He wanted Korea to become a modern country and felt that the areas of science and engineering were studies that needed improving in order to achieve modernization. While researching Western textbooks on the subjects he realized that Western mathematics would be especially important for Korea. With that, it became his mission to integrate Western mathematics into the Korean educational system. This paper will explain the importance of Sang-Seol Lee's contributions to mathematic education in Korea and how it helped Korea become the modern nation it is today.

        Rhodopseudomonas sp. KCTC 1437의 수소생성에 있어서의 Hydrogenase와 Nitrogenase의 관계

        Rhodopseudomonas sp. KCTC 1437은 N $H_4^+$나 빛에 무관하게 수소를 발생할 수 있다. 이 사실로부터 이 균주는 nitrogenase뿐만 아니라 hydrogenase 에 의해서도 수소를 생성할 수 있다는 것을 확인했다. 이 두 효소의 수소생성 능력을 in vivo에서 측정할 수 있는 조건을 확립한 뒤 여러 가지 조건에 대해 발생한 수소양을 측정하였다. Hydrogenase 는 nitrogenase의 수소생성을 저해하는 $O_2$나 $N_2$, $C_2$ $H_2$ 등에 대해서도 그 활성의 감소가 없거나 작았으며, $H_2$에 의해서는 오히려 수소생성능이 증대되었단. 또 이 균주는 hydrogenase에 의해 수소를 밭아들여 $CO_2$를 광환원시킬 수도 있음도 알았다. 이상의 결과, hydrogenase가 혐기적이면서 빛이 있는 조건에서만 수소를 생성하는 nitrogenase보다 더 광범위하고 유리한 조건에서 수소를 생성할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 이러한 사실은 이 균주로 대량의 수소생산을 할 때 유리하게 이용될 수 있을 것이다. Both hydrogenase and nitrogenase were found to be involved in hydrogen evolution independently in Rhodopseudomonas sp. KCTC 1437. The hydrogen formation in this bacterium was independent on light illumination and presence of N $H_4^{+}$ After establishment of conditions to measure the amount of hydrogen evolved by each of the enzymes in vivo, the several factors affecting on the hydrogen evolution, e.g. presence of gases ( $C_2$ $H_2$, $H_2$, $O_2$ or $N_2$), C/N ratio, were investigated, Hydrogenase was less inhibited than nitrogenase under $O_2$ and was active independent on the presence of $N_2$ or $C_2$ $H_2$ which were the strong inhibitor of nitrogenase. Besides, the hydrogenase activity was increased after incubation with $H_2$. And it was verified that this bacterium consume hydrogen and photoreduce $CO_2$ by hydrogenase. From above results, it is concluded that hydrogenase in Rhodopseudomonas sp. KCTC 1437 can produce hydrogen under more favorable condition that nitrogenase.e.

        The Determination of Stress Distribution in WC-Ni Cemented Carbide Composites by Neutron Diffraction

        The thermal stress distribution of WC and Ni binder phases In WC-26st.%Ni and WC-6wt.%Ni composites has been investigated over the temperature range 100-900 K using a time-of-flight neutron diffractometer. To determine the stress distribution, the breadths of WC and Ni peaks in the reference powder and the composites were analyzed. The peak breadths were corrected for particle size effect using a procedure based on the integral peak breadth method of particle size-strain analysis. The result shows a broad range of strain, and thus stress, is present in the WC and Ni binder phases of the composites. The strain distribution of both phases broadens as the temperature decreases, and some fraction of total strain distribution of the WC phase remains tensile regardless of the temperature. The strain distribution of the WC phase broadens as the binder content increases, and that of Ni binder phase broadens as the binder content decreases, which means the strain distribution broadens as the absolute value of residual stress increase.

        SiO<sub>2</sub> ceramic nanoporous substrate-reinforced sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) composite membranes for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

        Porous substrate-reinforced composite membranes have been extensively investigated due to their promising application to proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). In this study, we develop a new ceramic-based reinforcing porous substrate, which consists of hygroscopic silica (SiO<SUB>2</SUB>) nanoparticles interconnected by 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS)-based silicate binders and a poly(paraphenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) nonwoven support. This unusual ceramic substrate is featured with the strong mechanical strength, well-developed nanoporous structure (i.e., nanosized interstitial voids formed between the close-packed SiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanoparticles), high hydrophilicity, and more notably, good water retention capability. The nanostructured pores of the ceramic substrate are subsequently impregnated with sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone) (SPAES, degree of sulfonation = 49.3%). In comparison to a pristine SPAES membrane, the ceramic substrate-reinforced SPAES composite membrane offers the significantly improved dimensional change and also effectively mitigates the steep decline of proton conductivity at low humidity conditions, which is further discussed by considering the state of water in the reinforced composite membrane.

        Involvement of Cathepsin D in Apoptosis of Mammary Epithelial Cells

        During involution of the mammary gland after the lactation period, the gland undergoes an extensive epithelial cell death. In our previous study, overexpression of an extracellular proteinase inhibitor (Expi) gene accelerated apoptosis of mammary epithelial cells. Here we found that expression of the cathepsin D gene was induced in the Expi-overexpressed apoptotic cells. To understand the role of cathepsin D in apoptosis, we transfected cathepsin D gene into mammary epithelial HC11 cells and established the stable cell lines overexpressing the cathepsin D gene. We found that overexpression of the cathepsin D gene partially induced apoptosis of mammary epithelial cells. Expression patterns of the cathepsin D gene were examined in mouse mammary gland at various reproductive stages. Expression of the cathepsin D gene was increased during involution stages compared to lactation stages, and highest expression levels were shown at involution on day 4. We also examined expression of the cathepsin D gene in various mouse tissues. Mammary gland at involution on day 2 showed highest levels of cathepsin D mRNA of the mouse tissues that we examined. Liver tissues showed high levels of cathepsin D expression. These results demonstrate that cathepsin D may contribute to the apoptotic process of mammary epithelial cells.

      • Design Strategy for a Piezoelectric Nanogenerator with a Well-Ordered Nanoshell Array

        <P>The piezoelectric nanogenerator (PNG) has been spotlighted as a promising candidate for use as a sustainable power source in wireless system applications. For the further development of PNGs, structural optimization is essential, but the structural analysis progress in this area has been scant. In the present study, we proposed a PNG with a well-ordered nanoshell array structure. The nanoshell structure has been considered as an effective core nanostructure for PNGs due to its effective stress confinement effect but has not been experimentally introduced thus far due to the challenging fabrication method required. To produce a controllable nanoshell structure, a top-down silicon nanofabrication technique which involves advanced spacer lithography is introduced. A comprehensive design strategy to enhance the piezoelectric performance is proposed in terms of the nanoshell diameter and shell-to-shell space. Both simulated and measured data confirm that an extremely high density of a structure is not always the best answer to maximize the performance. The highest amount of power can be achieved when the shell diameter and shell-to-shell space are within their proper ranges.
