This paper presents the findings of two design research cycles on learning and teaching different proofs of the Pythagorean theorem in German secondary schools during distance learning in the first research cycle and a flipped classroom in the second research cycle. The study explores students’ difficulties when learning proofs in the different scenarios by analyzing students’ proof schemes, occurring error patterns, the students’ descriptions of their proof comprehension, and evaluations of the learning scenarios. The findings indicate that typical difficulties occur less in the flipped setting, especially for students with a low or average level of prior knowledge. Further analysis of the evaluation of the learning activities suggests that this can be attributed to the implemented adaptations of the learning scenario when changing it from a distance learning setting to a flipped learning setting, in particular, the opportunity to work collaboratively and direct support the teacher. These results have implications regarding the potential of the flipped classroom as a way for educators to integrate instructional approaches they developed during the COVID-19 pandemic into their in-person teaching in the future.
Our Fragile Attitude towards Migrants Case Study: Germany
Johanna Rothe,Park Jin-woo 통섭인문학회 2022 통섭인문학 Vol.1 No.2
The aim of the article is to investigate the shift of public opinion in Germany on the continuing issue of migration. The general premise of this paper is the unprecedented wave of migration into Europe in the Summer of 2015. The sequence of events during the 2015 New Year’s celebration and the following ramifications provide a framework to understand the societal shift within Germany towards a more extreme and right-winged sentiment. The unfortunate hate crimes and political disputes in December 2015 led to the revelation of deeply rooted discriminatory structures. The guidance and direction of the current government is crucial for the future of Germany, but also for Europe, in the question of how to react and handle the lasting stream of refugees into the continent. Through this analysis it is suggested the Korean government should find proper guidance and follow directions embracing migrants.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The high tendency of tetravalent plutonium to form polymeric complexes and colloids is well known but the exact processes underlying their formation are still controversially discussed. In the present work, the nucleation of small polynuclear hydroxide complexes,<I>i.e.</I>, ionic species containing more than one Pu ion, their aggregation and formation of larger colloids (polymers exceeding some 5 nm in size) and finally ripening processes of freshly formed amorphous Pu(IV) colloids towards more crystalline particles are investigated by use of a combination of various spectroscopic techniques. By electrospray mass-spectrometry small polymers such as dimers, trimers and tetramers containing mixed oxidation states of Pu were observed. These polymers might be responsible for the equilibration between the Pu(III)/Pu(IV) and the plutonyl species Pu(V)/Pu(VI) even in dilute solutions in the absence of colloids or precipitates.</P>
A robust genome-editing method for wild plant species Nicotiana attenuata
강문영,안효민,Eva Rothe,Ian T. Baldwin,Kim Sang-Gyu 한국식물생명공학회 2020 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.14 No.5
CRISPR genome-editing techniques theoretically enable us to edit any genes in any plants. However, plant tissue culture is required for generating targeted mutants in plants, except in some model plant species such as Arabidopsis thaliana. To modify ecologically or agronomically important traits in plants using the CRISPR system, a robust plant regeneration method and efcient genome-editing tools must be developed. This study shows the entire process of genome editing and the regeneration process for wild tobacco, Nicotiana attenuata. We delivered T-DNA harboring Streptococcus pyogenes Cas9 (SpCas9) and guide RNA (gRNA) via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation into the hypocotyl cells of the wild tobacco and regenerated gene-edited plants. The efcacy of genome editing was measured in N. attenuata protoplasts in which SpCas9 and gRNA were transiently expressed. Light intensity (476.66–627.00 μW/cm2 , 20.69–52.21 μE) was optimized to enhance the emergence of plant shoots during callus induction, and the core step of dealing with plant tissues was recorded. In addition, we found that wounding the bottom part of mature plants was critical for root regeneration. By tracking mutation patterns and efciency at each regeneration step, we found that the mutation was induced early on in the tissue culture process and maintained throughout the regeneration process. Genome-editing techniques have opened the way to study the function of the genes in all plants, and this study will provide guidelines for editing a gene in the plant of interest.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The formation of ternary Mg-UO2-CO3complexes under weakly alkaline pH conditions was investigated by time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and compared to Ca-UO2-CO3complexes. The presence of two different Mg-UO2-CO3complexes was identified by means of two distinct fluorescence lifetimes of 17±2 ns and 51±2 ns derived from the multi-exponential decay of the fluorescence signal. Slope analysis in terms of fluorescence intensity coupled with fluorescence intensity factor as a function of log [Mg(II)] was conducted for the identification of the Mg-UO2-CO3complexes forming. For the first time, the formation of both MgUO2(CO3)32−and Mg2UO2(CO3)3(aq) species was confirmed and the corresponding equilibrium constants were determined as log β0113=25.8±0.3 and log β0213=27.1±0.6, respectively. Complementarily, fundamental structural information for both Ca-UO2-CO3and Mg-UO2-CO3complexes was gained by extended EXAFS revealing very similar structures between these two species, except for the clearly shorter U-Mg distance (3.83 Å) compared with U-Ca distance (4.15 Å). These results confirmed the inner-sphere character of the Ca/Mg-UO2-CO3complexes. The formation constants determined for MgUO2(CO3)32−and Mg2UO2(CO3)3(aq) species indicate that ternary Mg-UO2-CO3complexes contribute to the relevant uranium species in carbonate saturated solutions under neutral to weakly alkaline pH conditions in the presence of Mg(II) ions, which will induce notable influences on the U(VI) chemical species under seawater conditions.</P>
Nonlocal Transport in the Quantum Spin Hall State
Roth, A.,Brune, C.,Buhmann, H.,Molenkamp, L. W.,Maciejko, J.,Qi, X.-L.,Zhang, S.-C. American Association for the Advancement of Scienc 2009 Science Vol.325 No.5938
<P>Nonlocal transport through edge channels holds great promise for low-power information processing. However, edge channels have so far only been demonstrated to occur in the quantum Hall regime, at high magnetic fields. We found that mercury telluride quantum wells in the quantum spin Hall regime exhibit nonlocal edge channel transport at zero external magnetic field. The data confirm that the quantum transport through the (helical) edge channels is dissipationless and that the contacts lead to equilibration between the counterpropagating spin states at the edge. The experimental data agree quantitatively with the theory of the quantum spin Hall effect. The edge channel transport paves the way for a new generation of spintronic devices for low-power information processing.</P>
