Study of electronic structure and dielectric properties of Gd-doped cobalt nanoferrites

Kumar Arvind,Gora Mahendra Kumar,Kumar Sanjay,Choudhary Banwari Lal,Singhal Rishi Kumar,Dolia Satya Narain 한국물리학회 2022 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.81 No.9

The current article explores the dielectric and electronic properties of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles with Gd substitution in a series CoGdxFe2-xO4 (0≤x≤0.1, in step x=0.02) synthesized by the sol–gel self-combustion way. All the samples were studied with Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and impedance (dielectric) analyzer. One absorption band (υ1) was observed in FTIR measurements, which is the characteristic feature of spinel nanoferrites in fcc type structure. The presence of active Raman modes in Raman spectra at room temperature demonstrated single phase formation of cobalt nanoferrites with metallic–metallic and metallic–oxygen bonding vibrations in the tetrahedral and octahedral sites. XPS data analysis confrmed phase purity and revealed incorporation of Gd ion in the spinel fcc lattice. The valence states of Fe, Co & Gd atoms in all these nanoparticles are found as Fe3+, Co2+, & Gd3+. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss are measured in a broad frequency range of 100 Hz to 120 MHz. The dielectric constant reduces with a rise in Gd concentration and frequency. This study reveals that electronic and dielectric properties could be efectively tuned by varying concentrations of gadolinium in cobalt ferrite nanoparticles.

Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption among Indian Women

Rishi Kumar,Risheek Sood 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2020 Asian Women Vol.36 No.2

Excessive consumption of alcohol and tobacco is a serious public health issue. However, consumption among women is an underexplored area, especially in the context of India. This study aims to explore the factors associated with a greater likelihood of Indian women consuming alcohol and tobacco; the inputs can be used to profile women at higher risk of doing so. The study is based on the latest round of the National Family and Health Survey (NFHS), a large-scale and nationally representative dataset. It employs logistic regression to determine factors that are linked to higher odds of Indian women consuming alcohol and tobacco. We found that, while rural women consume more alcohol as compared to their urban counterparts, their consumption of tobacco is lower. Also, less-educated women consume more of both alcohol and tobacco and the same holds true for women whose husbands/partners are less educated. Also, women with alcoholic husbands/partners consume more alcohol. The paper represents an important addition to gender-focused research on the neglected area of alcohol and tobacco consumption among Indian women, and makes an important contribution toward policy formulation for reducing their consumption of these products.

      • Serum Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-A (VEGF-A) as a Biomarker in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Head and Neck Patients Undergoing Chemoradiotherapy

Srivastava, Vikas Kumar,Gara, Rishi Kumar,Rastogi, Namrata,Mishra, Durga Prasad,Ahmed, Mohd Kaleem,Gupta, Shalini,Goel, Madhu Mati,Bhatt, Madan Lal Brahma Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.7

Background: To evaluate serum VEGF-A levels in squamous cell carcinoma of head and neck (SCCHN) patients and relationships with response to therapy. Materials and Methods: Serum VEGF-A levels in patients (n=72) treated with radiotherapy (RT) or radio-chemotherapy (RCT) and controls (n=40) were measured by ELISA. Results: Serum VEGF-A levels of the SCCHN cases were significantly higher (p=0.001) than in healthy controls, and in patients with positive as compared to negative lymph node status (p=0.004). Similarly, patients with advanced stage (Stage III-IV) disease had more greatly elevated levels of serum VEGF-A level than their early stage (Stage I-II) counterparts (p=0.001). In contrast, there was no significant difference (p=0.57) in serum level of VEGF-A in patients with advanced T-stage (T3-4) as compared to early stage (T1-2). Similarly, patients with distant metastasis had no significant (p=0.067) elevation in serum VEGF-A level as compared to non-metastatic disease. However, the non-responder patients had significantly higher serum VEGF-A level as compared to responders (p=0.001). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the serum VEGF-A level may be a useful biomarker for the prediction of response to therapy in SCCHN.

Identification of New Source of Resistance to Powdery Mildew of Indian Mustard and Studying Its Inheritance

        Joghee Nanjundan,Channappa Manjunatha,Jalli Radhamani,Ajay Kumar Thakur,Rashmi Yadav,Arun Kumar,Mohan Lal Meena,Rishi Kumar Tyagi,Devender Kumar Yadava,Dhiraj Singh 한국식물병리학회 2020 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.36 No.2

Powdery mildew of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea), caused by Erysiphe cruciferarum, is emerging as ma- jor problem in India. All the Indian mustard cultivars presently grown in India are highly susceptible to pow- dery mildew and so far no resistance source has been reported. In this study, with an aim to identify resistant source, 1,020 Indian mustard accessions were evaluated against E. cruciferarum PMN isolate, at Wellington, The Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, India under natural hot spot conditions. The study identified one accession (RDV 29) with complete resistance against E. cruciferarum PMN isolate for the first time, which was consistent in five independent evaluations. Genetic analysis of F1, F2 and backcross populations obtained from the cross RSEJ 775 (highly susceptible) × RDV 29 (highly resistant) for two season revealed that the resistance is governed by two genes with semi-dominant and gene dosage effect. Further, a new disease rating system using six scales (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) has also been proposed in this study to score powdery mildew based on progress of fungal growth in different plant parts of the F2 population. The outcome of this study viz. newly identified powdery mildew-resistant Indian mustard accession (RDV 29), information on inheritance of resistance and the newly developed disease rating scale will provide the base for development of powdery mildew-resistant cultivars of Indian mustard.

Theoretical study of temperature dependent lattice anharmonicity in TlCl and TlBr

Rishi Pal Singh,Rajendra Kumar Singh 한국물리학회 2010 Current Applied Physics Vol.10 No.4

Effect of temperature on ultrasonic attenuation in BCC structured (CsCl-type) thallium halides (TlCl and TlBr) have been investigated in a wide temperature range 50–500 K for longitudinal and shear modes along [1 0 0], [1 1 0] and [1 1 1] directions of propagation. Starting with nearest neighbour distance and repulsive parameter and taking interactions up to next nearest neighbours, second and third order elastic moduli have been evaluated, which in turn have been used for evaluating thermal relaxation time,Gruneisen numbers, acoustic coupling constants, ultrasonic velocity and ultrasonic attenuation. Ultrasonic attenuation in these bcc structured crystalline materials has been found less than the fcc crystalline materials. The results have been discussed and compared with available data.

Vascular Injuries Due to Penetrating Missile Trauma in Anti-Terrorism Ops

        ( Rishi Dhillan ),( Alok Bhalla ),( Sushil Kumar Jha ),( Hakam Singh ),( Aman Arora ) 대한외상학회 2019 大韓外傷學會誌 Vol.32 No.2

Purpose: Penetrating vascular trauma though less common poses a challenge to all Surgeons. This study was designed to analyse the profile, management modalities of vascular trauma and the outcomes thereof at a Trauma Care Centre in a Tertiary care setting in hostile environment in India. Methods: A prospective review of all patients with arterial and venous injuries being transferred to the Trauma Center at out Tertiary Care Center between June 2015 and May 2018 was done. Demographics, admission data, treatment, and complications were reviewed. Results: There were a total of 46 patients with 65 vascular injuries, 39 arterial injuries and 26 venous injuries. The age range was 21 to 47 years. Nineteen patients had both arterial and venous injuries. A total of 42 cases presented within 12 hours of injury and complete arterial transections were found in 33 cases (80.49%). There were three mortalities (6.52%) and three amputations (8.33%). The overall limb salvage rate was 91.67% with popliteal artery being the commonest injured artery. Poor prognosticators for limb salvage were increasing time to present to the trauma centre, hypovolemic shock, multi-organ trauma and associated venous injuries. Conclusions: Penetrating missile trauma leading to vascular injuries has not been widely reported. Attempting limb salvage even in cases with delayed presentation should be weighed with the threat to life before revascularisation and should preferably be done at a centre with vascular expertise. A team approach with vascular, orthopaedic, general surgeons, and critical care anaesthesiologists all aboard improve the outcomes manifold. Use of tourniquets and early fasciotomies have been emphasized as is the use of native veins as the bypass conduit. This is probably the largest study on penetrating Vascular trauma in anti-terrorism ops from the Indian subcontinent. It highlights the significance of prompt recognition and availability of vascular expertise in optimally managing cases of vascular trauma.

Congenital Absence of Posterior Elements of C2 Vertebra with Atlanto-Axial Dislocation and Basilar Invagination: A Case Report and Review of Literature

Sudhir Kumar Srivastava,Pradip Sharad Nemade,Rishi Anil Aggarwal,Sunil Krishna Bhoale 대한척추외과학회 2016 Asian Spine Journal Vol.10 No.1

Developmental anomalies of the axis are commonly encountered, especially anomalies involving the odontoid process. Anomalies of the posterior elements are uncommon. We describe a unique case of agenesis of posterior elements of C2 with basilar invagination and atlanto-axial dislocation. An obese 8-year-old boy presented with symptoms of cervical myelopathy. Radiological workup revealed a craniovertebral junction anomaly with occipitalised atlas, absent posterior elements of axis, and hypertrophied C3 spinous process. Atlanto-axial instability and basilar invagination was present. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed hypoplastic left vertebral artery. Traction with cervical tongs failed to improve the alignment and symptoms. Anterior trans-oral release, followed by posterior decompression and custom-made instrumentation, was done. The patient recovered completely and was asymptomatic at the end of two years. X-ray and computed tomography scan demonstrated reduction of basilar invagination and maintenance of alignment. This is the first case to be reported of agenesis of posterior elements of axis associated with basilar invagination. One should look for this condition in patients with hypertrophied spinous process of C3. Utilization of hypoplastic pedicle of axis serves as an additional fixation point to increase the stability of the construct.

The Versatile Approach: A Novel Single Incision Combined with Anterior and Posterior Approaches for Decompression and Instrumented Fusion to Treat Tuberculosis of the Thoracic Spine

        Sudhir Kumar Srivastava,Rishi Anil Aggarwal,Sunil Krishna Bhosale,Kunal Roy,Pradip Sharad Nemade 대한척추외과학회 2017 Asian Spine Journal Vol.11 No.2

Study Design: Retrospective case series. Purpose: To describe a novel single incision that combines anterior and posterior approaches for decompression and instrumented fusion to treat tuberculosis of the thoracic spine and study the neurological and radiological outcomes. Overview of Literature: Tuberculosis of the spine remains a major health issue in many developing countries. The options for treating tuberculosis of the thoracic spine include the anterior, posterior, and combined approaches, each with its advantages and disadvantages. Methods: Totally, 143 patients with tuberculosis of the thoracic spine were surgically treated using the “Versatile approach”. Posterior fixation was performed using sublaminar wires and a Hartshill rectangle in all patients. Anterior reconstruction was accomplished using bone graft harvested from autologous rib, iliac crest, or fibula. Results: The study included 45 males and 98 females, with a mean age of 33.18±18.65 years (range, 3–82 years) and a mean followup of 60.23±24.56 months (range, 18–156 months). Kyphosis improved from a mean value of 24.02 preoperatively to 10.25 postoperatively. A preoperative neurological deficit was observed in 131 patients, with 130 patients regaining ambulatory power. No patient had deterioration of neurological status following surgery. Fusion was achieved in all cases. The visual analogscale score improved from an average score of 7.02 preoperatively to 1.51 at final follow-up. Eight patients had superficial macerations, which healed spontaneously. One patient had buckling of the anterior graft, and one patient had implant breakage following road traffic accident. Conclusions: The “Versatile approach” is an effective, single-stage, single-incision method that combines anterior and posterior approaches for the surgically treating tuberculosis of the thoracic spine. It offers the advantage of direct visualization for decompression and reconstruction of the anterior and posterior vertebral columns, thus providing an excellent, long-lasting clinical outcome.

Apical Vertebral Column Resection with Sagittal Rotation and Controlled Anterior Opening and Posterior Closing Maneuver for the Treatment of Severe Post-Tubercular Kyphosis: Case Series and Literature Review

        Sudhir Kumar Srivastava,Rishi Anil Aggarwal,Sunil Krishna Bhosale,Kunal Roy,Pradip Sharad Nemade,Shaligram Purohit 대한척추외과학회 2019 Asian Spine Journal Vol.13 No.3

Study Design: Retrospective case series. Purpose: Describe the technique and evaluate the outcome of apical vertebral column resection (VCR) with sagittal rotation and anterior opening and posterior closing (AOPC) maneuver for correction of severe post-tubercular kyphosis (PTK). Overview of Literature: The surgical procedures described for the correction of PTK are VCR, pedicle subtraction osteotomy, transpedicular decancellation osteotomy, and closing-opening osteotomy. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 21 patients who had been operated on with single stage apical VCR with AOPC maneuver. Radiographs were obtained before surgery and at regular follow-up intervals. These were used to calculate the angle of kyphosis. Back pain was rated using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and neurological status was graded using Frankel grading. Radiological outcome was assessed by the improvement in the angle of kyphosis and fusion following surgery. Neurological status was assessed using Frankel grading. Results: The study included eight males and 13 females with a mean age of 21.9 and average follow-up time of 30.4 months. The average number of vertebral bodies destroyed was 2.57. Kyphosis was improved from a mean of 68.42°±13.23° preoperative to 8.71°±4.58° postoperative. The average correction achieved was 87.10%. Preoperative VAS score improved from a mean of 6.38±0.92 preoperative to 1.38±0.49 postoperative. No patients had any sign of neurological deterioration. Seven out of eight patients with a preoperative neurological deficit improved following surgery. Two patients developed superficial wound maceration, one had persistent postoperative hypotension, and the other developed hemothorax. All patients recovered fully without a need for additional surgery. Conclusions: Single stage simultaneous anterior column lengthening and posterior column shortening is an effective method for surgical correction of severe PTK.
