The Bible and Environmental Ethics An Introduction to the Earth Bible Project

Contemporary ecological crises require a reevaluation of how humans understand themselves in relationship to the rest of the natural world, including a reassessment of the role religion has played in the history of ecological degradation. This article introduces the Earth Bible Project, the work of an international team of biblical scholars in conversation with scholars from other disciplines, especially ecologists, that engages in such a reevaluation of the Christian Bible. This reevaluation has led to the conclusion that the Christian Bible contains both historic roots that have contributed to the ecological crisis as well as ecological wisdom that should be retrieved so that humans may reimagine their relationship to the environment in ways that contribute to environmental ethics.
DISCRETE GROUPS ACTING ON S³ x Rⁿ

We study the Seifert fiber space constructions modelled on the product space S3 x W in terms of Lee and Raymond's characterization ([LR2]), and show that if a discrete group Q acts properly discontinuously on a space W, then the trivial extension S3 x Q is the only extension of S3 by Q that can act weakly S3 -equivariantly on S3 x W. When Q is a discrete group acting properly on R² with compact quotient, the discrete groups acting on S3 x R² as a group of weakly S3 -equivariant homeomorphisms (i.e. , as Seifert automorphisms) are characterized and the actions are described.
From Dominion Day to Canada Day, 1946-1982: History, Heritage and National Identity

The more than twenty attempts in the Canadian Parliament from 1946 to 1982 to change the official name of Canada’s birthday from Dominion Day to Canada Day shows that change did not come rapidly to national symbols after the Second World War. The struggle over the name change was not a contest between those who wanted to keep Canada British and those who wanted Canada to have its own unique Canadian identity, but rather a debate over the role that Canada’s history and heritage should play in shaping national symbols. This paper also contends that the place that Canada’s British heritage played in Canada’s national identity became a partisan political issue as the federal government began to remove lingering symbols of the British heritage to meet the growing separatist movement in Quebec. In other words, Canada’s national identity was being manipulated and manufactured in the pursuit of national unity.

Purpose: Treatment for periodontitis has evolved over the years as new technologies have become available. Currently, lasers seem attractive as a treatment modality, but their effectiveness needs to be verified. The purpose of this project was to evaluate Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure® (LANAP®) surgery as a single treatment modality. Methods: As part of a mandatory training program for periodontists and other dentists, 22 consecutive patients diagnosed with moderate to severe periodontitis (probing depth [PD] up to 11 mm) were treated with the LANAP® surgical approach using a 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser as part of a multi-step protocol. Following single-session active therapy, they were entered into a maintenance program. Their clinical status was re-evaluated at 12–18 months following surgery. Results: All 22 patients completed the 12- to 18-month follow-up. PD, clinical attachment level, and furcation (FURC) showed substantial improvement. Recession was minimal (mean, 0.1 mm), while 93.5% of PD measurements were 3 mm or less at re-evaluation. Furthermore, 40% of grade 2 FURC closed clinically. Conclusions: Within the limits of this case series, LANAP® was found to be an effective, minimally invasive, laser surgical therapy for moderate to advanced periodontitis.
Antioxidant C-glycosylflavones of Drymaria cordata (Linn.) Willd

A new C-glycosylflavone, drymaritin E (6-C- (3-keto-b-digitoxopyranosyl)-40-O-(b-D-glucopyranosyl)- 7-methoxyl-5,40-dihydroxylflavone) 1 was isolated from the oily upper phase (SU) of the MeOH extract from aerial parts of Drymaria cordata together with two known compounds (cassiaoccidentalin A 2 and anemonin 3) and an inseparable mixture of two known C-glycosylflavones 5,40- dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone-6-C-(200-O-a-L-rhamnopyranosyl)- b-D-glucopyranoside 4a and 5,7,30,40-tetrahydroxyflavone- 6-C-(200-O-a-L-rhamnopyranosyl)-b-D-glucopyranoside 4b. The alkaline hydrolysis of 3 led to a new hemisynthetic derivative, sodium anemonate (sodium 2-((1’E) 20-sodium-carboxylate-vinyl)-5-oxo-cyclohex- 1-ene carboxylate) 3a. The chemical structures were determined by spectroscopic methods (1H NMR, 13C NMR, 1H-1H COSY, HMBC, HSQC, and NOESY) and mass spectrometry (ESI–MS). C-glycosylflavones had significant free radical-scavenging activities on the radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). However, SU and compounds 3 and 3a exhibited no activity. In particular, compound 1 exhibited a concentration-dependent radical scavenging activity on DPPH with EC50 of 31.43 lg/mL.
