Three Ecotypes of Compsopogon coeruleus (Rhodophyta) from Orissa State, East Coast of India

Ratha, Sachitra Kumar,Jena, Mrutyunjay,Rath, Jnanendra,Adhikary, Siba Prasad The Korean Society of Phycology 2007 ALGAE Vol.22 No.2

Three ecotypes of the freshwater red alga Compsopogon coeruleus (Balbis) Montagne were recorded from different freshwater and brackish water habitats of Orissa state in the east coast of India. These three had persistent differences in their branching pattern, e.g. (i) acute angle between main axis and lateral branch, (ii) equal or near to right angle between main axis and lateral branch, and (iii) short spine-like outgrowth instead of a branch in older filaments, besides having differences in the length, breadth and thickness of cortex of the thallus. Morphological observation of these taxa, and the ecological characteristics of the habitat of their occurrence is presented.

      • Seven-Day Bismuth-based Quadruple Therapy as an Initial Treatment for Helicobacter pylori Infection in a High Metronidazole Resistant Area

Vilaichone, Ratha-korn,Prapitpaiboon, Hatainuch,Gamnarai, Pornpen,Namtanee, Juraiwan,Wongcha-um, Arti,Chaithongrat, Supakarn,Mahachai, Varocha Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.14

Background: The prevalence of metronidazole-resistant H. pylori is almost 50% in Thailand which severely limits the use of this drug for eradication therapy. The aims of this study were to evaluate the efficacy and safety profiles of 7-day bismuth-based quadruple therapy including metronidazole as an initial treatment for H. pylori infection in a high metronidazole resistance area. Materials and Methods: This study was performed at Thammasat University Hospital and King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital during January 2009 to October 2010. Patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) with active H. pylori infection were assigned to receive seven days of quadruple therapy (pantoprazole 40 mg bid, bismuth subsalicylate 1,048 mg bid, amoxicillin 1 gm bid and metronidazole 400 mg tid). H. pylori infection was defined as positive H. pylori culture or two positive tests (rapid urease test and histology). Antibiotic susceptibility test for metronidazole by Epsilometer test (E-test) was performed in all positive cultures. At least four weeks after treatment, $^{13}C$ urea breath test ($^{13}C-UBT$) was performed to confirm H. pylori eradication. Results: A total of 114 patients were enrolled in this study, 50 males and 64 females with a mean age of 49.8 years. All 114 patients had a diagnosis of NUD. Overall eradication as confirmed by negative $^{13}C-UBT$ was achieved in 94 out of 114 patients (82.5%). 44 patients had positive cultures and success for E-test. In vitro metronidazole resistance was observed in 22/44 (50%) patients. Eradication rate in patients with metronidazole resistant strains was 16/22 (72.7%) and 20/22 (90.1%) with metronidazole sensitive strains (72.7% vs 90.1%, p-value=0.12; OR=3.75 [95%CI=0.6-31.5]). Minor adverse reactions included nausea, bitter taste, diarrhea and black stools but none of the patients dropped out from the study. Conclusions: Initial treatment with 7-day bismuth-based quadruple therapy including metronidazole, amoxycillin and pantoprazole is highly effective and well tolerated for metronidazole-sensitive H. pylori infections. However, the efficacy markedly decline with metronidazole resistance. Longer duration of this regimen might be required to improve the eradication rate and larger multi-center studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Longitudinal Dispersion Subjected to Rigid Vegetation in a Channel

        Dwarikanath Ratha,Avinash Chandra,Richa Babbar,Arindam Sarkar 대한토목학회 2018 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.22 No.12

Estimation of longitudinal dispersion coefficient is an important parameter for dispersion of the contaminants and hence can be used in any river water quality management intervention. Since the natural river water body is dominated by the presence of vegetation, it is expected that the longitudinal dispersion coefficient will be affected by the presence or absence of the vegetation. Hence in this study the effect of vegetation on longitudinal dispersion coefficient has been studied. Experiments have been conducted in a channel having rigid vegetation using rhodamine as tracer and concentrations of rhodamine is measured at various time intervals at 2 and 4 m downstream from the point of injection. The longitudinal dispersion coefficient is determined in the presence as well as absence of vegetation in the channel having Reynolds number varying from 2500-10000 and Froude’s number varying from 0.02- 0.05. It is found that the longitudinal dispersion coefficient downstream to the vegetation is affected in the presence of the vegetation. It is also found that the dispersion coefficient depends on number of rows of vegetation but significantly depends on the diameter of vegetation. A new functional relationship between dimensionless terms is derived using dimensional analysis for predicting the dispersion coefficient.

      • Clinical Characteristics and Helicobacter pylori Status of Gastric Cancer in Thailand

Vilaichone, Ratha-Korn,Panarat, Wirat,Aekpongpaisit, Surasak,Mahachai, Voracha Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.20

Background: Gastric cancer is the second leading course of cancer death worldwide and H. pylori infection is an important risk factor for gastric cancer development. This study was design to evaluate the clinical, pathological features, survival rate and prevalence of H. pylori infection in gastric cancer in Thailand. Materials and Methods: Clinical information, histological features, endoscopic findings and H. pylori status were collected from gastric cancer patients from Thammasat university hospital during June 1996-December 2011. H. pylori infection was assessed by histological evaluation, rapid urease test and serological test. Clinical information, endoscopic findings and histopathology of all patients were recorded and compared between patients with active or non-active H. pylori infection. Results: A total of 100 gastric cancer patients (55 men and 45 women with mean age of $55{\pm}16.8years$) were enrolled in this study. Common presenting symptoms were dyspepsia (74%), weight loss (66%), anemia (63%) and anorexia (38%). Mean duration of symptoms prior to diagnosis was 98 days. Overall prevalence of H. pylori infection was 83% and active H. pylori infection was 40%. 1-year and 5-year survival rates were 43% and 0%. There was no significant difference between active H. pylori infection in different locations (proximal vs non-proximal: 47.1% vs 48.5%; P-value = 0.9, OR=0.9; 95%CI=0.3-3.1) and histology of gastric cancer (diffuse type vs intestinal type: 47.4% vs 50%; P-value = 0.8, OR=0.9, 95%CI=0.3-2.7). However, linitis plastica was significantly more common in non-active than active H. pylori infection (27.9% vs 0%; P-value<0.0001, OR=13.3, 95%CI=3.2-64.5). Moreover, gastric cancer stage 4 was higher in non-active than active H. pylori infection (93% vs 50%, P-value<0.001). Conclusions: Prevalence of H. pylori infection in Thai gastric cancer patients was high but active infection was low. Most gastric cancer patients presented in advance stage and had a grave prognosis. Screening for gastric cancer in high risk individuals might be an appropriate tool for early detection and improve the treatment outcome for this particular disease in Thailand.

Factors increasing poly-γ-glutamic acid content of cheongguk-jang fermented by Bacillus subtilis 168

Pov Ratha,전덕영 한국식품과학회 2019 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.28 No.1

Cheongguk-jang is a Korean traditional foodproduced by natural fermentation of boiled soybean. Incheongguk-jang, bacilli are dominant bacteria and producehighly viscous poly-c-glutamic acid (c-PGA), whichimproves human health functions. The purpose of thisexperiment was to find maximum production condition forthe c-PGA content during fermentation of cheongguk-jangwith Bacillus subtilis 168. The most viscous cheonggukjangwas produced when soybean was cooked at 121 C for60 min in the presence of 50%(w/w) added water, followedby fermentation at 40 C for 2 days. Additional conditionsfor maximum production of c-PGA were the addition of0.1%(w/w) FeCl3 6H2O, 3.0%(w/w) lactose and 3.0%(w/w) yeast extract as nutrients of inorganic salts, carbonsource and nitrogen source, respectively. The three conditionsdid not show cumulative effect on the c-PGA productionand the addition of iron salt induced the most c-PGA (0.97 ± 0.05%(w/w)), which corresponded to 2.7times of the content in control cheongguk-jang.

Macroeconomic Determinants of International Remittances: Evidence from Time-Series and Panel Methods

Artatrana Ratha,Eungmin Kang 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2020 Journal of Economic Development Vol.45 No.3

TAt more than three times official development aid flows, remittances are now recognized as a key source of scarce foreign exchange for the developing world. Most papers looking into the macroeconomic determinants of remittance inflows tend to be panel, cross-sectional, or qualitative country-specific studies, understandably due a lack of consistent time-series data. We estimate an econometric model using the bounds-testing approach to cointegration and error-correction modeling (Pesaran et al., 2001) on time-series data as well as by employing traditional panel methods on the same data set. It appears that the generalized evidence based on panel or cross-sectional studies may not apply to individual countries.
