Centrifugal Model Test on the Failure Mechanism of Barrier Dam Overtopping

        Tianlong Zhao,Shengshui Chen,Changjing Fu,Qiming Zhong 대한토목학회 2019 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.23 No.4

In order to study the failure mechanism of barrier dam overtopping, centrifugal model tests of dam failure were conducted in this research. A calculation method of rectangular weir flow in the centrifugal field was derived. The process and mechanism of barrier dam overtopping were intensively analyzed. They were further verified by the breach flow curve and the development curve of the breach top width acquired from model tests. Results showed that the barrier dam breach developed during the entire process of overtopping in the width direction. The development of the barrier dam breach in the depth direction, however, ceased at an earlier time on account of the large particles accumulated in the downstream slope. Moreover, coarsening in the downstream slope could be clearly observed in the last stage of overtopping. Thus, it was concluded that the bottom part of the barrier dam could survive after dam breaching and that a full dam failure is relatively rare for a barrier dam. Furthermore, the size of the remaining breach would be less than that of a homogeneous earth dam under the same conditions.

Antioxidant properties of a vegetable–fruit beverage fermented with two Lactobacillus plantarum strains

        Xiaoxing Yang,Jiachun Zhou,Liqiang Fan,Zhen Qin,Qiming Chen,Liming Zhao 한국식품과학회 2018 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.27 No.6

Fermented vegetable–fruit beverages are a popular fermented food, with many potential health benefits. In this study, two commercial Lactobacillus plantarum strains were selected to ferment a beverage containing apples, pears, and carrots. The metabolites and antioxidant activities were examined during the fermentation process. Results showed that lactic acid and acetic acid accumulated gradually, whereas malic acid decreased. Glucose and fructose increased from 0.48 and 14.8 g/L to 7.7 and 20.8 g/L, respectively, while sucrose decreased slightly. Ascorbic acid also increased continuously during the fermentation to 90.74 mg/100 mL. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity and FRAP reached their maximum value after 4–8 days. The accumulation of TPC, TFC, and SOD reached their maximum value on the 8th day of fermentation. Our study revealed that the L. plantarum-fermented vegetable–fruit beverage showed significant antioxidant activity, which is helpful in evaluating the fermentation end-point and developing a high-quality fermented beverage.

D-RADA16-RGD-Reinforced Nano-Hydroxyapatite/Polyamide 66 Ternary Biomaterial for Bone Formation

        Bo Qiao,Bin He,Ao Zhou,Yuling Li,Xiaojun Chen,Qiming Yang,Beike Chen,Bo Qiao,Dianming Jiang 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2019 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.16 No.2

BACKGROUND: Nano-hydroxyapatite/polyamide 66 (nHA/PA66) is a composite used widely in the repair of bone defects. However, this material is insufficient bioactivity. In contrast, D-RADA16-RGD self-assembling peptide (DRADA16- RGD sequence containing all D-amino acids is Ac-RADARADARADARADARGDS-CONH2) shows admirable bioactivity for both cell culture and bone regeneration. Here, we describe the fabrication of a favorable biomaterial material (nHA/PA66/D-RADA16-RGD). METHODS: Proteinase K and circular dichroism spectroscopy were employed to test the stability and secondary structural properties of peptide D-RADA16-RGD respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the surface of these materials. Confocal laser scanning (CLS), cell counting kit-8 tests (CCK-8), alizarin red S staining, cell immunofluorescence analysis and Western blotting were involved in vitro. Also biosafety and bioactivity of them have been evaluated in vivo. RESULTS: Proteinase K and circular dichroism spectroscopy demonstrated that D-RADA16-RGD in nHA/PA66 was able to form stable-sheet secondary structure. SEM and TEM showed that the D-RADA16-RGD material was 7–33 nm in width and 130–600 nm in length, and the interwoven pore size ranged from 40 to 200 nm. CLS suggests that cells in nHA/PA66/ D-RADA16-RGD group were linked to adjacent cells with more actin filaments. CCK-8 analysis showed that nHA/PA66/ D-RADA16-RGD revealed good biocompatibility. The results of Alizarin-red S staining and Western blotting as well as vivo osteogenesis suggest nHA/PA66/D-RADA16-RGD exhibits better bioactivity. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that our nHA/PA66/D-RADA16-RGD composite exhibits reasonable mechanical properties, biocompatibility and bioactivity with promotion of bone formation.

A review of experimental methods for characterising composite viscosities of continuous fibre-reinforced polymer composites

        Wang Jinhuo,Han Yang,Ge Xiaohong,Qi Zhengbing,Zhao Jun,Wang Rongwen,Wu Huawei,Han Taiping,Sun Shaoxun,Wang Hui,Lin Jia,Liu Yuejun,Kong Xiangsong,Chen Qiming,Zeng Xiangxu 한국유변학회 2023 Korea-Australia rheology journal Vol.35 No.2

Optimisation design of composite structures requires an accurate predictive model for forming behaviour. The simulation process contains a number of model parameters which include transverse and longitudinal viscosities of continuous fibrereinforced viscous composites, fundamental to predicting the shear rheology. Shearing the unidirectional composite along the fibre direction gives a measure of the longitudinal viscosity (LV), whilst shearing across or transverse to the fibre direction gives a measure of the transverse viscosity (TV). Numerous experimental work was conducted in the past to measure these two viscosities for various materials. However, conflicting measurements by different test methods were obtained and these apparent discrepancies had not yet been systematically investigated in any single study. This paper reviews previous work on characterisation techniques to further understand the cause of such discrepancy, and hence to improve measurement accuracy, which would benefit future work on theoretical modelling of the composite viscosities and optimisation simulation of composites forming. Some important findings, such as effects of resin-rich areas, contributory factors of elastic effects, non-Newtonian behaviour for composites with Newtonian matrix, aspect ratio and end effects of test samples, geometry effects of fibres and fibre rearrangement during shearing, existence of a mathematical relationship between LV and TV and necessary benchmarking exercise using Newtonian matrix composites, were summarised.
