Economic Production of Probiotics from Kitchen Waste

        Chunhua Yin,Xue Dong,Le Lv,Zhi-Guo Wang,Qianqian Xu,Xiaolu Liu,Hai Yan 한국식품과학회 2013 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.22 No.suppl1

In the present work, a novel treatment method of kitchen waste for economic production of probiotics was investigated. This required the selection of suitable probiotic microorganisms. Based on the pure cultures of probiotic strains for the fermentation kitchen waste, 5 strains of microorganisms including 1 strain of Lactobacillus, 2strains of Bacillus, and 2 strains of yeast were selected, respectively. These probiotic microorganisms were mixed at the same ratio and cultured using the kitchen waste as culture medium at pH of 7.2 and temperature of 37oC. After 24 h, the total count of the viable cells reached 2.24×1010 CFU/g, which was higher than that obtained in any single probiotic strain pure culture. It was found that the presence of yeasts and Bacillus species enhanced the growth of Lactobacillus strain. Bench scale experiments were also done in a self-designed rotating drum type bioreactor. The experimental results indicate that there is a good possibility of utilizing kitchen waste for the economic production of probiotics.

      • An Improved Super-resolution Image Reconstruction Algorithm

Yong Yin,Qianqian Ruan,Tao Zhang 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Signal Processing, Image Vol.9 No.3

The paper introduces the Keren registration method and points out its disadvantage which means it will become inaccuracy on the large scale parameters. To reduce the error on large scale parameters of Keren registration, a two step method is proposed, which the phase correlation algorithm is used to estimate the large translation and rotation angle roughly and the improved Keren algorithm is used to estimate accurately the small translation and rotation angle. The experimental results show that the two step method makes less absolute error of angle than Keren method in the situation of large translation and rotation angle. A new method of estimating the standard deviation of noise is introduced to the robust certainty function, which reduces the impact of noise in the process of interpolation using normalized convolution algorithm. By the edge detection of fusion image in the first stage of the interpolation process of normalized convolution algorithm, a calculation method of long axis and short axis of the structure self-adaptive function is improved. The experimental results show that the proposed interpolation method can improve the performance of the original algorithm and enhance the effect of image super-resolution reconstruction.

      • Epigenetically Modified Bone Marrow Stromal Cells in Silk Scaffolds Promote Craniofacial Bone Repair and Wound Healing

        Han, Qianqian,Yang, Pishan,Wu, Yuwei,Meng, Shu,Sui, Lei,Zhang, Lan,Yu, Liming,Tang, Yin,Jiang, Hua,Xuan, Dongying,Kaplan, David L.,Kim, Sung Hoon,Tu, Qisheng,Chen, Jake Mary Ann Liebert 2015 Tissue engineering. Part A Vol.21 No.15

<P>Epigenetic regulation of gene expression is a central mechanism that governs cell stemness, determination, commitment, and differentiation. It has been recently found that PHF8, a major H4K20/H3K9 demethylase, plays a critical role in craniofacial and bone development. In this study, we hypothesize that PHF8 promotes osteoblastogenesis by epigenetically regulating the expression of a nuclear matrix protein, special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 2 (SATB2) that plays pivotal roles in skeletal patterning and osteoblast differentiation. Our results showed that expression levels of PHF8 and SATB2 in preosteoblasts and bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) increased simultaneously during osteogenic induction. Overexpressing PHF8 in these cells upregulated the expression of SATB2, Runx2, osterix, and bone matrix proteins. Conversely, knockdown of PHF8 reduced the expression of these genes. Furthermore, ChIP assays confirmed that PHF8 specifically bound to the transcription start site (TSS) of the SATB2 promoter, and the expression of H3K9me1 at the TSS region of SATB2 decreased in PHF8 overexpressed group. Implantation of the BMSCs overexpressing PHF8 with silk protein scaffolds promoted bone regeneration in critical-sized defects in mouse calvaria. Taken together, our results demonstrated that PHF8 epigenetically modulates SATB2 activity, triggering BMSCs osteogenic differentiation and facilitating bone formation and regeneration in biodegradable silk scaffolds.</P>

Research progress of single-atom coating and its application prospect in protective coatings

        Chijia Wang,Qianqian Yin,Shuyi Liu,Jianxin Wang,Weihao Fan,Zhanjian Liu,Fatang Liu,Yize Liu,Huaiyuan Wang 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.128 No.-

Coating technology is the most economical and efficient approach to retard metal corrosion, and newcomposite coatings prepared by adding monoatomic fillers to a polymer matrix have excellent corrosionresistance and good mechanical properties. The single-atom coating formed by the immobilization ofmetal atoms alone on the matrix or filler represents the maximum utilization of atoms at the presentstage, which has unique coordination properties, active sites, and synergistic effects with the support. Compared with traditional fillers, single-atom fillers not only have the advantages of supporting fillersbut can also provide monatomic metals to form passivation films, promote the progress of catalytic passivationreactions, and combine organic compounds to generate new composite materials. This paperfocuses on the preparation methods and mechanisms of single-atom coatings in the field of batteriesand catalysts as well as the application of composite materials prepared by combining single-atom materialswith polymer matrices in the field of metal protection. The preparation methods, application prospects, and coating characteristics of various single-atom composites were summarized. In addition,we discuss the potential applications of single-atom coatings in the design of future composite coatings.

Growth Performance and Meat Quality of Broiler Chickens Supplemented with Bacillus licheniformis in Drinking Water

        Liu, Xiaolu,Yan, Hai,Lv, Le,Xu, Qianqian,Yin, Chunhua,Zhang, Keyi,Wang, Pei,Hu, Jiye Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2012 Animal Bioscience Vol.25 No.5

A feeding trial was conducted to investigate effects of Bacillus licheniformis on growth performance and meat quality of broilers. Nine hundred one-d-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 3 experimental groups with three replicate pens of 100 broiler chicks. Three treatments were i) control, ii) basal diets supplemented with 1 ml of B. licheniformis for each in feed water per day iii) basal diets supplemented with 2 ml of B. licheniformis per chick in feed water per day. The supplementation of B. licheniformis significantly increased body weight in grower chickens (p<0.05), and significantly improved the feed conversion in 3 to 6 and 0 to 6 wk feeding period compared with the control group (p<0.05). Additionally, the supplement also resulted in increased protein and free amino acid contents, and decreased fat content in chicken breast fillet (p<0.05). Furthermore, improvement in sensory attributes was observed in broilers fed with the probiotic. In conclusion, B. licheniformis treatments resulted in a significant increase (p<0.05) in broiler productivity based on an index taking into account daily weight gain and feed conversion rate. Meanwhile, the probiotic contributed towards an improvement of the chemical, nutritional and sensorial characteristics of breast fillet. Overall, the study indicates that B. licheniformis can be used as a growth promoter and meat quality enhancer in broiler poultry.

Adiponectin Regulates Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cell Niche Through a Unique Signal Transduction Pathway: An Approach for Treating Bone Disease in Diabetes : Adiponectin Regulates BMSC Niche

        Yu, Liming,Tu, Qisheng,Han, Qianqian,Zhang, Lan,Sui, Lei,Zheng, Leilei,Meng, Shu,Tang, Yin,Xuan, Dongying,Zhang, Jin,Murray, Dana,Shen, Qingping,Cheng, Jessica,Kim, Sung-Hoon,Dong, Lily Q.,Valverde, P Wiley (John WileySons) 2015 Stem Cells Vol.33 No.1

<P>Adiponectin (APN) is an adipocyte-secreted adipokine that exerts well-characterized antidiabetic properties. Patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) are characterized by reduced APN levels in circulation and impaired stem cell and progenitor cell mobilization from the bone marrow for tissue repair and remodeling. In this study, we found that APN regulates the mobilization and recruitment of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) to participate in tissue repair and regeneration. APN facilitated BMSCs migrating from the bone marrow into the circulation to regenerate bone by regulating stromal cell-derived factor (SDF)-1 in a mouse bone defect model. More importantly, we found that systemic APN infusion ameliorated diabetic mobilopathy of BMSCs, lowered glucose concentration, and promoted bone regeneration in diet-induced obesity mice. In vitro studies allowed us to identify Smad1/5/8 as a novel signaling mediator of APN receptor (AdipoR)-1 in BMSCs and osteoblasts. APN stimulation of MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells led to Smad1/5/8 phosphorylation and nuclear localization and increased SDF1 mRNA expression. Although APN-mediated phosphorylation of Smad1/5/8 occurred independently from adaptor protein, phosphotyrosine interaction, pleckstrin homology domain, and leucine zipper containing 1, it correlated with the disassembly of protein kinase casein kinase 2 and AdipoR1 in immunoprecipitation experiments. Taken together, this study identified APN as a regulator of BMSCs migration in response to bone injury. Therefore, our findings suggest APN signaling could be a potential therapeutic target to improve bone regeneration and homeostasis, especially in obese and T2D patients.</P>
