<P>Remanent magnetization has long been known to exist in the lunar crust, yet both the detailed topology and ultimate origin(s) of these fields remains uncertain. Some crustal magnetic fields coincide with surface albedo anomalies, known as lunar swirls, which are thought to be formed by differential surface weathering of the regolith underlying crustal fields due to deflection of incident solar wind protons. Here, we present results from a three-dimensional, self-consistent, plasma hybrid model of the solar wind interaction with two different possible source magnetizations for the Reiner Gamma anomaly. We characterize the plasma interaction with these fields and the resulting spatial distribution of charged-particle weathering of the surface and compare these results to optical albedo measurements of Reiner Gamma. The model results constrain the proposed source magnetizations for Reiner Gamma and suggest that vertical crustal magnetic fields are required to produce the observed 'dark lanes.' The Dharma of Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay in Mammalian Cells
Popp, Maximilian Wei-Lin,Maquat, Lynne E. Korean Society for Molecular and Cellular Biology 2014 Molecules and cells Vol.37 No.1
Mammalian-cell messenger RNAs (mRNAs) are generated in the nucleus from precursor RNAs (pre-mRNAs, which often contain one or more introns) that are complexed with an array of incompletely inventoried proteins. During their biogenesis, pre-mRNAs and their derivative mRNAs are subject to extensive cis-modifications. These modifications promote the binding of distinct polypeptides that mediate a diverse array of functions needed for mRNA metabolism, including nuclear export, inspection by the nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) quality-control machinery, and synthesis of the encoded protein product. Ribonucleoprotein complex (RNP) remodeling through the loss and gain of protein constituents before and after pre-mRNA splicing, during mRNA export, and within the cytoplasm facilitates NMD, ensuring integrity of the transcriptome. Here we review the mRNP rearrangements that culminate in detection and elimination of faulty transcripts by mammalian-cell NMD.

Lifting a Metadata Model to the Semantic Multimedia World
Martens, Gaetan,Verborgh, Ruben,Poppe, Chris,Van De Walle, Rik Korea Information Processing Society 2011 Journal of information processing systems Vol.7 No.1
This paper describes best-practices in lifting an image metadata standard to the Semantic Web. We provide guidelines on how an XML-based metadata format can be converted into an OWL ontology. Additionally, we discuss how this ontology can be mapped to the W3C's Media Ontology. This ontology is a standardization effort of the W3C to provide a core vocabulary for multimedia annotations. The approach presented here can be applied to other XML-based metadata standards.

Traditionally, attendance has been the prevailing measure of demand in the intercollegiate athletics industry. However, new sources have emerged, including television ratings and revenue from broadcast rights fees and sponsorship agreements such as apparel and naming rights contracts. Given that U.S.-based intercollegiate athletics departments receive an estimated $500 million annually via rightsholders such as IMG College and Learfield for their multimedia rights (MMR), these rights fees have emerged as an important source of revenue. This research breaks new ground by utilizing these rights fees in a model that estimates how much each institution should receive, and identifying those who have been paid more or less than predicted. Results indicate that in many instances IMG College has overpaid for rights, while Learfield has underpaid, and that rights are predicted by the institution’s performance in men’s basketball and demand for its football program, rather than institutional or market-related factors.
Light as a Trigger and a Probe of the Internal Dynamics of Living Organisms

It has been reported that the colors perceived behind closed eyes provide an indication of the psychophysical state of a subject. We discuss this phenomenon in the light of recently developed approaches to living organisms, based on the interplay between matter organization, biochemistry and electrodynamics.
