Highly-stable molybdenum/aluminum (Mo/Al) bilayered electrodes have been demonstrated as promising candidates for use in stretchable electronics. The serpentine-shaped Mo/Al bilayer electrode is shown to be operable with up to 220% elongation and no significant change in resistance. In Al-only electrodes, Al penetrates into the polyimide (PI) because of its high chemical reactivity with PI. This issue can be overcome by inserting Mo underneath the Al layer, blocking the reaction between Al and PI and enabling the formation of robust and highly conductive stretchable electrodes. With the proposed bilayer electrodes, stretchable thin-film transistor arrays that can be operated even when elongated up to 220% are realized. The fabricated devices exhibit very stable device performance under highly stretched conditions.

<P>BACKGROUND: Although heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is involved in anti-inflammation, the mechanisms of its activity in regulating periodontal inflammation are largely unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the anti-inflammatory properties of HO-1 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)- and proinflammatory cytokine-stimulated inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression and nitric oxide (NO) production in human periodontal ligament (PDL) cells. METHODS: PDL cells were treated with LPS plus a combination of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interleukin (IL)-1beta in serum-free media for 1 day. The production of NO was evaluated using a Griess reagent kit. The expression of iNOS and HO-1 proteins and mRNAs was evaluated using Western blotting and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, respectively. RESULTS: Proinflammatory cytokines and LPS triggered iNOS and HO-1 expression and NO production in PDL cells. HO-1 inhibitor and HO-1 small interfering RNA (siRNA) attenuated the LPS- and cytokine-stimulated NO release and iNOS and HO-1 expression. Specific inhibitors of p38, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) mitogen-activated protein kinases phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kappaB), and protein kinase C delta (PKC-delta) greatly reduced the levels of iNOS and HO-1 expression induced by LPS plus cytokines. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, these data suggested that HO-1 inhibition blocked LPS- and proinflammatory cytokine-stimulated iNOS expression and NO production in PDL cells via a mechanism that involves p38, ERK, PI3K, NF-kappaB, and PKC-delta. Thus, the regulation of HO-1 activity may be a therapeutic strategy for periodontal disease.</P>

In many insect species including fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae), the behavioral responses to volatiles emitted by their host plants can be modulated by environmental conditions and by the physiological state of the insect. Here, we quantified (1) the effects of female age on the attraction of female melon fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Diptera: Tephritidae) to volatiles emitted by intact and mechanically damaged tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), eggplant (S. melongena), zucchini (Cucurbita pepo), bitter melon (Momordica charantia), and cucumber (Cucumis sativus) fruit, and (2) the influence of time elapsed since fruit damage on the outcome. The investigations were conducted under semi-natural conditions in Hawai’i. Results from the first experiment revealed that, for freshly damaged tomato, eggplant, and zucchini, the level of female response was comparatively low and was not affected by female age. For bitter melon and cucumber, higher levels of response to freshly damaged fruit were documented, and the response levels gradually increased as female age increased from 1 to 4 weeks, reaching 70% for 4-week-old females exposed to cucumber odor. Results from our second experiment indicated that, on average, 56% of the females released responded in 20 min when cucumbers were freshly sliced, and the level of response was reduced 6-fold within a couple of hours. Females did not respond to tomato and cucumber odor when fruits were damaged >8 h before testing. Fruit volatiles involved in female Z. cucurbitae attraction seem to be released shortly upon mechanical damage and they are short-lived. The plasticity of the olfaction-driven behavior observed in Z. cucurbitae depending on female age and on the strength of the olfactory cues associ ated with preferred and less preferred hosts, adds another dimension to our understanding of the host-seeking behavior of this invasive species.

This report describes the gross, histological, andimmunohistochemical features of medullary thyroidcarcinoma (MTC) with pulmonary metastases in a youngdog. Sheets of pleomorphic cells supported by fibrous stromacharacterized the primary mass, while metastatic noduleshad a neuroendocrine pattern. Despite differing histologicfeatures, all masses showed marked immunoreactivityagainst calcitonin and multiple neuroendocrine markersconsistent with MTC. Although MTC is a well-recognizedentity, it may be difficult to distinguish this mass from other thyroid neoplasms, necessitating immunohistochemical characterization.
SIZE OF DOT PRODUCT SETS DETERMINED BY PAIRS OF SUBSETS OF VECTOR SPACES OVER FINITE FIELDS

In this paper we study the cardinality of the dot product set generated by two subsets of vector spaces over finite fields. We notice that the results on the dot product problems for one set can be simply extended to two sets. Let E and F be subsets of the d-dimensional vector space $\mathbb{F}^d_q$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with q elements. As a new result, we prove that if E and F are subsets of the paraboloid and ${\mid}E{\parallel}F{\mid}{\geq}Cq^d$ for some large C > 1, then ${\mid}{\Pi}(E,F){\mid}{\geq}cq$ for some 0 < c < 1. In particular, we find a connection between the size of the dot product set and the number of lines through both the origin and a nonzero point in the given set E. As an application of this observation, we obtain more sharpened results on the generalized dot product set problems. The discrete Fourier analysis and geometrical observation play a crucial role in proving our results.

Commercial products with specific textures and rheological properties can be made by controlling theprocessing variables by evaporation. In this research, we investigate the effect of evaporation time onrheological properties, DSD, microstructure and physical stability of biodegradable emulsions formulatedwith rosemary oil and Appyclean 6548, an alkyl polypentoside surfactant derived from wheat straw. Results showed that the rheological properties of emulsions depend greatly on time of evaporation andaging time. This method makes it possible to improve the viscosity and viscoelasticity compared withemulsions without evaporation. The main destabilization process wasflocculation. Emulsionsundergoing higher evaporation time also exhibited coalescence. In conclusion, rosemary nanoemulsionsobtained by vacuum evaporation showed high stability and great resistance against creaming, makingthese appropriate for use in functional foods or cosmetic products.

Using a strategic management perspective, this paper conceptualizes how event tourism creates and appropriates value for locations and regions supporting tourism. A conceptual framework of the six principles of tourism value creation integrates theoretical developments in value creation and retention, service innovation, and networks and regional clusters. This model applies to three levels of players: individual entities, tourism-supporting organizations, and the geographic or regional clusters that promote tourism. This framework demonstrates how event tourism creates value for individual tourists, tourism-related organizations, and regional economies, while also enhancing competitiveness for regions and individual nations. The model offers a new perspective for future research directions and practitioner guidance to create and sustain competitive advantage.
