This study adopted the forced-swimming paradigm to induce depressive symptoms in rats and evaluated the effects on learning and memory processing. Furthermore, the effects of the water extract of Gastrodia elata Bl., a well-known Chinese traditional medicine, on amnesia in rats subjected to the forced-swimming procedure were studied. Rats were subjected to the forced-swimming procedure, and the inhibitory avoidance task and Morris water maze were used to assess learning and memory performance. The acquisition of the two tasks was mostly impaired after the 15-minute forced-swimming procedure. Administration of the water extract of G. elata Bl. for 21 consecutive days at a dosage of 0.5 or 1.0 g/kg of body weight significantly improved retention in the inhibitory avoidance test, and the lower dose showed a better effect than the higher one and the antidepressant fluoxetine (18 mg/kg of body weight). In the Morris water maze, the lower dose of the water extract of G. elata Bl. significantly improved retention by shortening escape latency in the first test session and increasing the time in searching the target zone during the probe test. These findings suggest that water extracts of G. elata Bl. ameliorate the learning and memory deficits induced by forced swimming.

Background: In intensive care units, mechanical ventilation is an important therapy to help patients with dysp- nea. However, long-term ventilator dependence would consume huge medical resources and increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. The aim of the study was to examine the efficacy of the acupuncture combined with western medical care on ventilator parameters in ventilator-dependent patients. Methods: In this clinical trial, 80 ventilator-dependent patients aged 20 to 80 years old were randomly assigned to acupuncture group and control group in the respiratory care center (RCC) of Changhua Christian Hospital. Besides regular medical care and therapy, participants in the acupuncture group received acupuncture therapy at the same 17 acu-points for 20 minutes once a day, a total of 12 sessions. The ventilator parameters were recorded to evaluate the respiratory efficiency for all participants. The primary outcome was rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI), and secondary outcomes were respiratory rate (RR), tidal volume (TV) and ventilation per minute (MV). Results: Though there was no significant difference in the parameter between the acupuncture group and the control group, we found the trend of decreasing RSBI in the acupuncture group. In subgroup analyses, the mean of RSBI significantly decreased 16.02 (with the SD in 60.84) in acupuncture group, while it increased 17.84 (with the SD in 39.38) in control group (p = 0.036) after 12 sessions. Conclusion: Acupuncture treatment can improve breathing ability of patients with respirator dependence in respiratory care center.

Objective: Predicting disease relapse and early intervention could reduce symptom severity. We attempted to identify potential indicators that predict the duration to next admission for an acute affective episode in patients with bipolar I disorder. Methods: We mathematically defined the duration to next psychiatric admission and performed single-variate regressions using historical data of 101 patients with bipolar I disorder to screen for potential variables for further multivariate regressions. Results: Age of onset, total psychiatric admissions, length of lithium use, and carbamazepine use during the psychiatric hospitalization contributed to the next psychiatric admission duration positively. The all-in-one found that hyperlipidemia during the psychiatric hospitalization demonstrated a negative contribution to the duration to next psychiatric admission; the last duration to psychiatric admission, lithium and carbamazepine uses during the psychiatric hospitalization, and heart rate on the discharge day positively contributed to the duration to next admission. Conclusion: We identified essential variables that may predict the duration of bipolar I patients’ next psychiatric admission. The correlation of a faster heartbeat and a normal lipid profile in delaying the next onset highlights the importance of managing these parameters when treating bipolar I disorder.

Muscadine grape (Vitis rotundifolia) is a popular fruit in the Southeastern United States because of its unique aroma and strong antioxidant capacity. Volatile compounds of a locally cultivated muscadine cultivar Cowart were characterized by solid-phase microextraction coupled with GC-MS. Twenty-eight volatile compounds, including fruity short-chain esters, alcohols, terpenes, and carbonyl compounds, were detected based on mass spectra and Kovats indices. Based on principal component analysis and hierarchical clustering, the grapes in stages I and II had relatively similar flavor patterns, which were different from that in stage III. Butyl-2-butenoate, hexyl acetate, propyl acetate, ethyl trans-2-butenoate, hexyl-2-butenoate, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, 1-octanol, ethyl hexanoate, and ${\beta}$-citral were present as distinct volatile chemicals in stage III, while nonanal, decanal, and ${\beta}$-citronellol were distinct in stage II, and myrcenol, ${\beta}$-ocimene, and l-limonene were biomarkers in stage I. Understanding volatile compounds at each stage can assist farmers in choosing the optimal time to harvest muscadine grapes.

A high-molecular-weight donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymer, pDTfBT-4T, poly(5,8-di[3-octyldodecanthiopen-5-yl]dithieno[3',2':3,4:2 '',3 '':5,6]benzo[1,2-c][1,2,5]-thiadiazole-alt-2,2'-bithiophene), including alternating dithieno[3',2':3,4;2 '',3 '':5,6]benzo[1,2-c][1,2,5]thiadiazole (DTfBT) and 3-octyldodecyltetrathiophene (4T) was synthesized by a Stille coupling polymerization. We found that pDTfBT-4T had a molecular number-average weight of 276 kg mol(-1) and formed unexpectedly strong interchain aggregates in dilute solutions at room temperature, which was similar to those in as-spun thin solid films. pDTfBT-4T thin films were spun-cast from a warm dilute chlorobenzene solution on hydrophobic polymer-treated SiO2 dielectrics. Some were shortly annealed at various temperatures (T) for 10 min to improve p-overlapped structures as charge-carrier transport paths. The ordered domains of pDTfBT-4T in the annealed films could be tuned from one-dimensional nanorods to two-dimensional nanosheets with an increasing in T, which also provided enhanced crystal orientation. Optimizing the conjugated structures of pDTfBT-4T in the annealed films, the polymer based OFETs yielded a hole mobility up to 1.45 cm2 V-1 s(-1) as well as negligible hysteresis and excellent negative bias stability.

Stem cell-based therapeutic approach provides a possible treatment for critical limb ischemia (CLI) byinducing revascularization and regenerating ischemic tissue. However, the clinical benefit is modestdue to low cell survival and limited efficacy after transplantation. Cardiac-derived stem cells (CSCs) mightbe a novel cell source for CLI treatment owing to their superb endothelial differentiation potential andangiogenic paracrine functions. In this study, the angiogenic ability of CSCs was maximized by geneticengineering with constitutively active form of hypoxia-inducible factor-1a (CA-HIF-1a), resistant tooxygen-dependent degradation. CSCs transfected with CA-HIF-1a (CA-HIF-CSCs) promoted supplementaryexpression of proangiogenic factors including VEGF, bFGF, Ang-1 and PDGF-B, along with enhancedangiogenic function including migratory effect, tube formation and endothelial differentiation potential. In the mouse CLI model, CA-HIF-CSCs transplanted into the ischemic region using fibrin gel as cell deliveryvehicle, improved blood perfusion and limb functional recovery with minimal incidence of foot necrosisand limb loss by promoting new vessel formation. Histological evidence further confirmed that CAHIF-CSC/gel treatment markedly alleviated muscle degeneration and fibrosis. CSCs genetically engineeredwith constitutively active HIF-1a provide a novel therapeutic modality in CLI combining stem cell andgene therapy.
