Sensitivity study of parameters important to Molten Salt Reactor Safety

This paper presents a molten salt reactor (MSR) design parameter sensitivity study using a nodal dynamic modelling methodology with explicitly modified point kinetics equation and Mann’s model for heat transfer. Six parameters that can impact MSR safety are evaluated. A MATLAB-Simulink model inspired by Thorcon’s 550MWth MSR is used for parameter evaluations. A safety envelope was formed to encapsulate power, maximum and minimum temperature, and temperature-induced reactivity feedback. The parameters are perturbed by ±30%. The parameters were then ranked by their subsequent impact on the considered safety envelope, which ranks acceptable parameter uncertainty. The model is openly available on GitHub.
Epidemiology and disease characteristics of symptomatic choledocholithiasis in Sri Lanka

Backgrounds/Aims: Published data on choledocholithiasis in Sri Lanka is scarce. This study was conducted to determine epidemiological, clinical and endoscopic characteristics of choledocholithiasis in Sri Lanka. Methods: This was a retrospective study of consecutive patients for a period of three years until April 2016. The sample included patients from many parts of the island. Patients were selected from the endoscopy database of the unit and the data were collected from the records of the patients. Results: A total of 253 patients were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 53.6 years. Patients presented with obstructive jaundice (58.5%), cholangitis (25.3%), biliary colic or upper abdominal pain (14.2%) and acute biliary pancreatitis (1.8%). There were 26 (10.3%) post cholecystectomy patients. Concomitant gallbladder stones were found in 173 patients (68.4%). Juxta-papillary diverticula were found in 36 patients (14.2%). Twenty-one (8.3%) and nine patients (3.6%) were found to have choledochal cysts and common bile duct strictures, respectively. Stones were commonly found in the distal common bile duct (68.4%). A majority of the patients had a single stone (47.8%). In 209 patients (79.6%), the size of the largest stones measured between 0.5-1.5 cm. Conclusions: Choledocholithiasis is a disease affecting middle-aged population with predominance among females in Sri Lanka. Patients with symptomatic choledocholithiasis commonly present with obstructive jaundice. In the present study, most of the stones were formed in anatomically normal biliary systems. Stones were predominantly distal, single and measured 0.5-1.5 cm in size. The observed features were favorable features for successful endoscopic clearance. None of the patients included in the study had primary CBD stones according to the available criteria.

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica is a common microbial flora in pet turtles, which could opportunistically become pathogenic to human. Their possession of aminoglycoside resistance genes has important significance both in humans and animal medicine. In this study, twenty-one Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica were isolated from thirty-five individual turtles purchased from pet shops and online markets in Korea. In order to characterize the aminoglycoside susceptibility patterns, antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed against gentamicin, amikacin and kanamycin of aminoglycoside antimicrobial group. Each of the isolates showed susceptibility to all tested aminoglycosides in disk diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) tests. PCR assay was carried out to determine aminoglycoside resistance genes, integron and integron mediated aminoglycoside genes. None of the isolates showed aac(3)-IIa, aac-(6')-Ib, armA, aphAI-IAB aminoglycoside resistance genes. Only, five isolates (24%) harbored class 1 integron related IntI1 integrase gene. The results suggest that Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica strains isolated from pet turtles are less resistance to aminoglycosides and don't harbor any aminoglycosides resistance genes.
Disinfectant effect of monopersulfate (MPS) compound to white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) of shrimp

This study investigated the disinfection effect of monopersulfate (MPS) compound against white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) by bioassay using kuruma shrimp (Marsupenaeus japonicas). A WSSV stock was prepared with muscle homogenate from WSSV-infected whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) and its lethal dose 50% endpoint (LD<sub>50</sub>) and infectious dose 50% endpoint (SID<sub>50</sub>) were respectively determined as 10<sup>-5.63</sup> and 10<sup>-6.79</sup> in bioassay using kuruma shrimp, followed by PCR assays. The disinfective effect of MPS compound (1.2 ppm, 2.4 ppm, 4.8 ppm) was performed by bioassay using about 10-fold higher dilution (10<sup>-4</sup>) of WSSV homogenate. The compound resulted in WSSV inactivation by a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, 4.8 ppm of MPS completely prohibited WSSV infection. To our knowledge, this study is the first report about the usefulness of MPS as a disinfectant to WSSV.
