Heritability and Repeatability Estimates for Reproductive Traits of Japanese Black Cows

Reproductive data collected from more than 20,000 Japanese Black cows of Hyogo and Shimane Prefectures were analyzed. Averages of age at first calving, gestation length, days open and calving interval were 25.1 mo, 289 d, 112 d and 401 d, respectively. Variance components were obtained by REML procedure and the heritability estimate of age at first calving was 0.22. In gestation length the heritability estimate was 0.40 and no permanent environmental effect was estimated. Estimated variance components of calving interval were similar to those of days open and the heritability and repeatability of calving interval were 0.05 and 0.09, respectively. Random farm effects accounted for approximately 10% of phenotypic variations in all traits. Genetic and farm correlations between age at first calving and calving interval were 0.27 and 0.39, respectively. It was found that temporary environment was an important source of variation for calving intervals of Japanese Black.
DC Langmuir Probe for Measurement of Space Plasma: A Brief Review

Herein, we discuss the in situ measurement of the electron temperature in the ionosphere/plasmasphere by means of DC Langmuir probes. Major instruments which have been reported are a conventional DC Langmuir probe, whose probe voltage is swept; a pulsed probe, which uses pulsed bias voltage; a rectification probe, which uses sinusoidal signal; and a resonance cone probe, which uses radio wave propagation. The content reviews past observations made with the instruments above. We also discuss technical factors that should be taken into account for reliable measurement, such as problems related to the contamination of electrodes and the satellite surface. Finally, we discuss research topics to be studied in the near future.

Although sunitinib shows a high response rate in patients with untreated metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC), quite a few patients show no therapeutic effect. Therefore, it is crucial to distinguish the patients who respond to sunitinib from those who do not as early as possible after the administration of the therapy. We herein report a case of mRCC in which $^{11}C$-acetate (AC) positron emission tomography (PET) showed an early therapeutic effect of sunitinib treatment 4 weeks after its administration.

Reproductive abilities in beef cattle herds are receiving increased attention due to recent rises in production costs. To achieve more efficient management, a measure of fertility, namely the number of calves produced at k yr of age ($NCP_k$), was developed and its genetic parameters were estimated from Japanese Black cows by restricted maximum likelihood procedures. The k examined were distributed from 2 to 10 yr of age and $NCP_2$ averaged 1.077 calves over 43,536 cows. The averages increased by approximately 0.9 calf with each additional 1 yr increment in k. Heritabilities of $NCP_k$ were estimated to be low ranging from 0.083 to 0.162, which seemingly suggested a difficulty of genetic improvement. However, large genetic variation and high accuracy were observed in predicted breeding values of $NCP_k$. For example, the breeding values of $NCP_7$ were predicted between -0.303 and +0.213 with average accuracy of 0.607 for cows with observations. Genetic correlations among different k were generally high and positive (0.474 to 0.995). The analyses showed that at least $NCP_4$ was required to maintain the genetic correlations of 0.8 or higher with subsequent $NCP_k$. Also $NCP_5$ maintained the genetic correlations of 0.9 or higher with subsequent $NCP_k$ The results suggested some possibilities for $NCP_k$ to be a selection criterion considering its genetic variation, high accuracy and consistency with subsequent performance.

We proposed a novel segment type switched reluctance motor (SRM) in which the segment core was embedded in aluminum (conductive metal) rotor block in order to increase the mechanical strength and easy manufacturing as well as to improve the performance characteristics and reduce the vibration and acoustic noise. This paper explains the operation principle and the drive system and shows the experimental results in comparison with the VR type SRM.

The present study compares the effects of two types of instruction on text comprehension and the learning of the form, meaning, and grammar of English nouns and verbs in a text: affective input enhancement (Affective IE), which enhances the affective processing of the topic of a second language (L2) text before it is read, without focusing on the linguistic aspects of the text (n = 40); and conceptual input enhancement (Conceptual IE), which enhances the conceptual processing of content words in an L2 text before it is read (n = 43). The results showed that (1) the Affective IE group evaluated the text topic more positively than the Conceptual IE group, (2) the Affective IE group outperformed the Conceptual IE group in the free-recall task as an index of text comprehension, (3) the Conceptual IE group outperformed the Affective IE group in the learning of the meaning of nouns in the text, and (4) the Affective IE and Conceptual IE groups were equally effective in facilitating the learning of the noun forms and the form, meaning, and grammar of verbs in the text. These findings suggest that Affective IE facilitates text comprehension and L2 learning.

Experimental study on three-dimensional shock interference flow of a supersonic Busemann biplane

In supersonic flight, an airplane generates shock waves that cause large wave drag as well as strong sonic boom. A supersonic airplane based on Busemann biplane was proposed as an innovative solution to realize supersonic transport. Shock waves are generated at the leading edge of the Busemann biplane and are cancelled by expansion waves generated from the ridgeline or the wings so that shock waves are confined inside the biplane and the drag and the sonic boom are dramatically reduced. The objective of this study is to investigate the three-dimentional shock interactions of a Busemann biplane by experiment. A supersonic biplane model with the aspect ratio of 2.5 was tested in a blow-down supersonic wind tunnel at M∞ = 1.5 to 1.7. Interacting flow around the wings was visualized by schlieren method and the pressure distribution on an inner surface of the wing was measured using pressure-sensitive paint (PSP). CFD calculations were also made to compare with experimental results. On the basis of these experimental and computational studies, the complicated three-dimensional interference phenomenon between the two wings, including shock wave/boundary layer interactions were analyzed and the three-dimensional flow effects on the start/uri start characteristics of the Busemann biplane are discussed.
