        Preoperative flexion contracture is a predisposing factor for cartilage degeneration at the patellofemoral joint after open wedge high tibial osteotomy

        The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of cartilage degeneration at the patellofemoral joint on clinical outcomes after open wedge high tibial osteotomy and to investigate the predisposing factors for progressive patellofemoral cartilage degeneration.Seventy-two knees were evaluated on second-look arthroscopy in patients who opted for plate and screw removal at an average of 20.1 months after osteotomy. Cartilage degeneration at the patellofemoral joint was evaluated using the International Cartilage Repair Society grading system, with cases divided into progression and nonprogression groups. Radiographic parameters of the patellofemoral anatomy, knee range of motion, and clinical outcomes were evaluated from the preoperative baseline to the final follow up, on average 50 months after osteotomy. A contracture > 5° was considered a flexion contracture. Cartilage degeneration progressed in 31 knees, and preoperative knee flexion contracture was significantly associated with progressive degeneration ( P < 0.01). The Lysholm and Kujala scores were significantly lower in the progression group (87.9 and 85.3, respectively) than in the nonprogression group (91.6 and 93.6, respectively) ( P < 0.05). The odds ratio of the flexion contracture resulting in progression of patellofemoral cartilage degeneration was 4.63 (95% confidence interval, 1.77–12.1). No association was detected between progressive degeneration and age, sex, body mass index, Kellgren-Lawrence grade, or radiographic parameters. Flexion contracture may be associated with progression of cartilage degeneration at the patellofemoral joint and may negatively affect the clinical outcomes after open wedge, high tibial osteotomy.

        We have proposed a set of devices for various manipulations in spatial works. The devices use a metaphor of existing tools which are familiar in everyday life. Such tools have good affordance, and at the same time, every user already has a mental model for their operation. We believe that such advantages not only lead users to the correct operation, but provide an intuitive operation. Initially, we realized TweezersDevice for pick-and-move manipulation in the spatial works. Now, we have developed BrushDevice for painting in 2D/3D space. This paper describes the design, mechanism, prototype, pilot test, and findings.

        Flow Loss Reduction by Applying Wide Chord Design -Examination of Mid-Flow loss outside Boundary Layer

        Generally the boundary layer loss is recognized as the main loss in the cascade flow in actual turbomachinery. Therefore, the loss in the other area outside the boundary layer which we call a mid-flow was often neglected. However, in the present paper, the mid-flow loss evaluation is conducted again to verify if it can really be neglected with all conditions. As a result, it is surely verified that the mid-flow loss can be negligible with higher pressure conditions. However, with lower pressure conditions, it is verified that the mid-flow loss can occupy several tens of % of the total loss; therefore, it cannot be neglected and it is effective to reduce the total loss by reducing the mid-flow loss with these conditions. Moreover, it is verified that the mid-flow loss has the characteristic in which it is inversely proportional to the chord for the identical solidity cascade flow; therefore, it is verified that wide chord cascade can reduce the mid-flow loss. Hence, the wide chord cascade can reduce the total loss in actual turbomachinery.

        Boundary Layer Loss Reduction of Cascade Flow by Wide Chord

        In actual turbomachinery, the wider chord cascade sometimes shows a higher aerodynamic efficiency than the shorter chord one. This study tries to ascertain the underlying physical mechanism of the wide chord advantage mentioned above in terms of the boundary layer loss reduction. It is verified the boundary layer loss has the characteristics of the chord to the power of -1/n ( n > 1), therefore, the wide chord can reduce it. Next, by CFD, it is verified the boundary layer loss is surely reduced by the wide chord. Consequently it is verified the wide chord is effective to reduce the viscous loss in actual turbomachinery.

      • Synthetic Study of Carbohydrate Binding Domain of Siglec7

        Sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin (Siglec) 7 is one of the sialic acid binding protein that plays an important role in immune system. Siglec 7 is expressed on natural killer cells and displays a unique ligand binding properties comparing to the other members of the Siglec family, specifically binds to  2,8-disialyl residues. The precise structural analysis of Siglec 7 has been already performed, and amino acid residues involved in the ligand binding are reported. In such context, we set out the first total chemical synthesis of Siglec 7 carbohydrate binding domain (CBD) which consists of 127 amino acid residues. Since chemical synthesis can easily introduce unnatural amino acids, we envisioned that we could produce an artificial sialic acid binding lectin based on this chemical synthetic strategy. The synthesis of Siglec 7 CBD was carried out by convergent total chemical synthesis. The whole polypeptide was assembled from 5 peptide segments (Figure), which were synthesized by conventional solid phase peptide synthesis. We applied native chemical ligation (NCL) for the coupling of these segments sequentially from C-terminus, combined with alkylation with haloacetoamide or desulfuration reaction. These reactions can provide pseudo-Gln residue or Ala residue from Cys residues at the ligation sites. Based on these strategies we have successfully obtained the full-length polypeptide of Siglec 7 CBD and currently are investigating the in vitro folding step.

        「國境をまたぐ生活圈」槪念の起点―梶村秀樹による金嬉老裁判への關わりを手がかりに―

        梶村秀樹(1935-89年)が1985年に整理した「國境をまたぐ生活圈」という槪念は在日朝鮮人硏究者の間では有名だが、本稿では金嬉老裁判への參與が起点となってこの槪念のもととなる論点が抽出されていったことを明らかにした。 金嬉老事件の前から梶村は在日朝鮮人硏究者の硏究に注目し、朝鮮人渡航史を整理するなど、在日朝鮮人史に關心をもっていた。しかし、金嬉老事件とその後の裁判への參與は梶村にとって、在日朝鮮人認識を深化させる上での畵期となる。 金嬉老裁判の中で梶村は機關誌への連載やその他の論考を通じて、金嬉老の經驗を在日朝鮮人に共通するものとして歷史化していった。それらの指摘は、植民地支配という歷史的背景をもつ在日朝鮮人はその生活圈が日本と朝鮮半島に二重にまたがっていながら、自由往來することを制限されているということを意味する。それはまさしく「國境をまたぐ生活圈」が分斷されていることを意味し、後に整理する「國境をまたぐ生活圈」槪念の起点となった。 The notion of “Transnational Sphere of Life” created by Hideki Kajimura(1935-89)in 1985has been famous among historians who study about Zainichi Koreans. This article aims to prove that Kajimura had gradually drawn components of this notion while he was engaging in the `Kim Heero case`. In other words Kajimura`s involvement in Kim Heero case was the starting point to construct this notion. Before the Kim Heero case, Kajimura gave attention to Zainichi Korean scholars and wrote the history about Korean immigrants in Japan in colonial era with his deep interest in history about Zainichi Koreans. However, the Kim Heero case and Kajimura`s involvement with the case led him widen his intellectual horizon about Zainichi Koreans. Kajimura framed Kim`s various experiences in a historical perspective and placed it in common experience of Zainichi Koreans. His arguments mean that Zainichi Koreans who moved to Japan under Japanese colonial rule straddled the sphere of life between Japan and Korea but on the other hand they were restricted to come and go freely. This means that their “Transnational Sphere of Life” was interrupted by Japanese government. It became the beginning of the notion of “Transnational Sphere of Life”.

        Cis-element architecture of Nrf3–sMaf heterodimer binding sites and its relation to diseases

        Cellular detoxication is essential for healthbecause it provides protection against various chemicalsand xenobiotics. The KEAP1–NRF2 system is important forcellular defense against oxidative and electrophilic stressesas NRF2 activates the transcription of an array of cytoprotectivegenes, including drug-metabolizing and antioxidantenzymes, in a stress-dependent manner. The CNC family oftranscription factors, including NRF2, form heterodimerswith small Maf (sMaf) proteins and bind to consensus DNAsequences that have been referred to as antioxidant responseelement, electrophile response element, or NF-E2-bindingelement. These sequences are now collectively called CNC–sMaf binding element (CsMBE). In addition to forming aheterodimer with CNC proteins, sMaf proteins can formhomodimers and recognize regulatory motifs called Maf recognitionelement (MARE). Although the CsMBE sequencesubstantially overlaps with that of MARE, the sequencesdiffer. NRF2 selectively recognizes CsMBE, which is criticalfor cytoprotection. Recent advances in high-throughputsequencing and population-scale genome analysis providenew insights into the transcriptional regulation involved inthe stress response. The integration of a genome-wide mapof NRF2 occupancy with disease-susceptibility loci revealsthe associations between polymorphisms in CsMBE and diseaserisk, information useful for the personalized medicineof the future.
