Peace education in conflict affected societies has achieved widespread popularity amongst international aid agencies seeking to find a place for education in supporting peacebuilding since the 1990s. However, its aims, content, and effectiveness have been critiqued particularly for its failures to address structural causes of grievances. This article draws on empirical research exploring a UNICEF supported peace education related curriculum reform in Sierra Leone developed in 2008 called “Emerging Issues.” The article draws on a critical discourse analysis of its content and qualitative interview data with key informants. It argues that while “Emerging Issues” was well-intentioned, its lack of regard for contextual dynamics generating conflict and a tendency to pathologize the nation served to undermine its transformatory goals.
The Role of Foxo3 in Leydig Cells

Purpose: Foxo3 in female reproduction has been reported to regulate proliferation of granulose cells that form follicles. There are no reports so far that discuss on the role of Foxo3 in males. This study was designed to outline the role of Foxo3 in the testes. Materials and Methods: Testes from mice at birth to postpartum week (PPW) 5 were isolated and examined for the expression of Foxo3 using immunostaining. To elucidate role of Foxo3 in Leydig cells, R2C cells were treated with luteinizing hormone (LH) and the phosphorylation of Foxo3. Testosterone and steroidogenic acute regulatory (StAR) protein levels were measured after constitutive active [triple mutant (TM)] human FOXO3 adenovirus was transduced and StAR promoter assay was performed. Results: Foxo3 expression in the testicles started from birth and lasted until PPW 3. After PPW 3, most Foxo3 expression occurred in the nuclei of Leydig cells; however, at PPW 5, Foxo3 was expressed in both the nucleus and cytoplasm. When R2C cells were treated with luteinizing hormone, Foxo3 phosphorylation levels by AKT increased. After blocking the PI3K pathway, LH-induced phosphorylated Foxo3 levels decreased, indicating that LH signaling regulates Foxo3 localization. When active FOXO3-TM adenoviruswas introduced into a Leydig tumor cell line, the concentrations of testosterone and StAR protein decreased. When FOXO3 and a StAR promoter vector were co-transfected into HEK293 cells for a reporter assay, FOXO3 inhibited the StAR promoter. Conclusion: FOXO3 affects testosterone synthesis by inhibiting the formation of StAR protein. LH hormone, meanwhile, influencesFoxo3 localization, mediating its function.

Kidneys are sensitive to disturbances in oxygen homeostasis. Hypoxia and activation of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) pathway alter the expression of genes involved in the metabolism of renal and immune cells, interfering with their functioning. Whether the transcriptional activity of HIF protects the kidneys or participates in the pathogenesis of renal diseases is unclear. Several studies have indicated that HIF signaling promotes fibrosis in experimental models of kidney disease. Other reports showed a protective effect of HIF activation on kidney inflammation and injury. In addition to the direct effect of HIF on the kidneys, experimental evidence indicates that HIF-mediated metabolic shift activates inflammatory cells, supporting the HIF cascade as a link between lung or gut damage and worsening of renal disease. Although hypoxia and HIF activation are present in several scenarios of renal diseases, further investigations are needed to clarify whether interfering with the HIF pathway is beneficial in different pathological contexts.

The measurements and subsequent conparison of CO_2, CH_4 and CO values at three East Asian and one Hawaiian site revaled that the annual and monthly mean concentrations at TQP in koren were the highest among other. The amplitude of seasonal variations including "noise" level mas also the highest at the TAP site. The cause of higher values at TAP was mainly due to its proximity to densely populated areas and to the influence of emission sources in East China. Presently, China is the top producet of coal in the world. In 1993 China consumed over 14 billion tons of fossil fuel including coal (~90%) and oil. Moreover, their annual growth rate of coal production is at least 10%. Therefore. the quantitave interpretation of differences in measured trace gases is important for the carbon budgets. The sites od UUM and QPC are located both in the upstream side of Pollution Monitoring Network (BAPMoN)". On the other hand. TAP is located at the eastern side of the Yellow Sea which is about 300-700 km from East China (across the Sea). TAP is in turn a suitable downstream site for the monitoring the atmospheric impact of regionally well-mixed emissions from China. With the prevailing westerlies in the mid-latitude, TAP is regarded as one of tactical sites for the monitoring of the regional and global carbon cycle.

Fungal strains were screened for lipase producingactivities and 10 strains were classified as good producers. Aspergillus sp., Fusarium sp., and Penicillium sp. exhibitedthe highest activities when fermented in wheat bran (WB)and soybean bran (SB). No fungal growth was observedusing sugarcane bagasse (CB). An experimental designwas applied to incorporate CB into the fermentation processfor lipase production by Aspergillus sp. and Penicilliumsp., and to evaluate the best moisture content for thesubstrate. Strains studied achieved maximum lipase activitieswith 25% CB combined with 75% WB or SB at 40%moisture content. The highest lipase activities were observedfor WB and SB, and for SB combined with CB usingAspergillus sp. Fermentation of 96 h was the optimumperiod for enzyme production.
