Spectroscopic studies of interactions of polyaniline with some Cu(II) compounds

The incorporation of planar Cu(II) complexes as dopants into ES-PANI through an ion-exchange process was investigated by spec-troscopic methods. A decrease in the intensity of the EPR signals from polarons in Cu(II) complex-doped PANI samples was observed,while the Cu(II) anion concentration increases and favors the formation of bipolarons in Cu(II) complex-doped PANI systems. A largeinuence of the copper complex counterion or the solvent on the conductivity in the PANI samples after ion-exchange has been observed.The reactions of EB-PANI following dierent levels of reduction or HCl doping with CuCl2 aqueous solution are also investigated andnew reaction mechanisms are proposed.
Evaluation of antioxidant activity of aniline and polyaniline

The ability of aniline and polyaniline (PANI) samples to act as antioxidants using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)free-radical method are investigated by applying UVVIS and ESR spectroscopy. The UVVIS spectra of reaction mixtures inMeOH showed that PANI is more eective than aniline in eliminating the DPPH radicals by a factor of 5.8, while HCl-doped PANIwas about 1.7 times more eective than PANI. A study of the kinetics of the reaction between DPPH and aniline showed that thereaction is rst order with respect to DPPH and approximately second order with respect to aniline. The relationship between thisand a previously proposed mechanism for this reaction is discussed.
Structure and properties of GPTMS/DETA and GPTMS/EDA hybrid polymers

Silica/epoxy hybrid polymers were synthesised from 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) by hydrolysis of the silane func-tional groups in strongly acidic (pH 2) or basic (pH 10) conditions, followed by epoxy ring opening and crosslinking using diethylaminetriamine (DETA) and ethylene diamine (EDA). Structural characterization of the hybrid polymers was performed using FTIR spectros-copy. The thermal properties of GPTMS/DETA and GPTMS/EDA hybrid polymers were investigated by dierential scanning calorim-inuence of pH on the structure and properties of the synthesised GPTMS/DETA and GPTMS/EDA hybrids is discussed

Background and Objectives: Controversy related to the choice of surgical approach for vestibular schwannoma (VS) resection remains. Whether the retrosigmoid (RS) or translabyrinthine (TL) approach should be performed is a matter of debate. In the context of a lack of clear evidence favoring one approach, we conducted a retrospective study to compare the morbidity rate of both surgical approaches. Subjects and Methods: 168 patients underwent surgical treatment (2007-2013) for VS at our tertiary care center. There were no exclusion criteria. Patients were separated into two groups according to the surgical approach: TL group and RS group. Signs and symptoms including ataxia, headache, tinnitus, vertigo and cranial nerve injuries were recorded pre- and postoperatively. Surgical complications were analyzed. Perioperative facial nerve function was measured according to House-Brackmann grading system. Results: Tumor resection was similar in both groups. Facial paresis was significantly greater in RS group patients preoperatively, in the immediate postoperative period and at one year follow-up (p<0.05). A constant difference was found between both groups at all three periods (p=0.016). The evolution of proportion was not found to be different between both groups (p=0.942), revealing a similar rate of surgically related facial paresis. Higher rate of ataxic gait (p=0.019), tinnitus (p=0.039) and cranial nerve injuries (p=0.016) was found in RS group patients. The incidence of headache, vertigo, vascular complications, cerebrospinal fluid leak and meningitis was similar in both groups. No reported mortality in this series. Conclusions: Both approaches seem similar in terms of resection efficacy. However, according to our analysis, the TL approach is less morbid. Thus, for VS in which hearing preservation is not considered, TL approach is preferable.
Reuse of Effluent Water Obtained in Ultrafiltration of Reactive Dyes

The Reactive Black 5 and Reactive Red dyestuffs have been synthesized in the laboratory. The synthesis wasobtained by diazotization of 1-amino-phenyl-4-beta hydroxyethyl sulfone sulfate ester and coupling with 1-amino-8-hydroxynaphthalene-3,6-disulfonic acid (H-acid) (mole ratio 2:1) (Reactive Black 5Na) and (mole ratio 1:1) (Reactive RedNa). The dye was purified-concentrated by ultrafiltration technology and the permeate (waste) was used as dye bath in theexhaustion of cotton and polyamide with the sodium salt of Reactive Black 5 (RB5Na) and the sodium salt of Reactive Red(RRNa). The same dyeing was also made with fresh water as dye bath. Fastness properties were also measured in both casesand the results were compared. Color measurement results of the dyeings were almost the same when the waste as dye bathwas used.
Fat Embolism Syndrome - Three Case Reports and Review of the Literature

The fat embolism syndrome (FES) represents a condition, usually with traumatic etiology, which may pose challenges to diagnosis while its treatment usually requires supportive measures in the intensive care units (ICUs). The clinical criteria, including respiratory and cerebral dysfunction and a petechial rash, along with imaging studies help in diagnosis. Here we present three case reports of young male who developed FES and were admitted to our ICUs after long bones fractures emerging after vehicle crashes and we briefly review FES literature. All patients' treatment was directed towards: 1) the restoration of circulating volume with fresh blood and/or plasma; 2) the correction of acidosis; and 3) immobilization of the affected part. All patients recovered and were released to the orthopedic wards. The incidence of cases of patients with FES admitted in our ICUs records a significant decrease. This may be explained in terms effective infrastructure reforms in Greece which brought about significant improvement in early prevention and management.

The microwave (MW) synthesis of polyaniline (PANI) is performed using potassium iodate (KIO3) as oxidizing agent in different concentrations of aqueous hydrochloric acid (HCl) at 8 and 93 W applied microwave power for duration of 10 min. The morphological and structural changes in synthesized MW PANI samples are investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). With decreasing pH of the reaction medium the morphology of MW PANI samples changed from slab-like with a small amount of fibrils to porous products which consist of short, rod-like structures. The FTIR spectra confirm that the microwave generated materials structurally consist of PANI, but aniline oligomer peaks are observed in the FTIR at 725 and 686 cm1 for MW PANI synthesized using 0.5 M aqueous HCl. The influence of acid dopant on the spin concentration of MW PANI synthesized at 8 and 93 W are examined.

Reactive dyes are widely used in the textile industry due to their versatility of shades, high wash fastness properties, and the ease of application. Dyeing properties such as exhaustion, substantivity, fixation, time to half dyeing, migration index and effect of metal salts were studied for a novel reactive dye (named RRNa) synthesized with one vinylsulfone as reactive group. The aim of this study is to figure out the influence of the ultrafiltration process this dye went through on its aforementioned properties. It was found that the ultrafiltrated reactive dye shows higher exhaustion, substantivity, dye uptake than the original dye, which is attributed to the purification performed by the ultrafiltration process. The migration index is slightly lower for the ultrafiltrated dye which indicates that its mobility is lower, due to the possible formation of more covalent bonds between the dye and the substrate. The effect of metals (Fe, Co, Cu) was also studied and the color strength of the dyeings in the presence of sulfate salts was compared with the control sample. It was found that Co2+ and Cu2+ have a detrimental effect on the shade obtained, whereas Fe3+ reduces color strength to a lower extent.
The antioxidant activity of conducting polymers in biomedical applications

The radical scavenging ability of soluble conducting polymers has been examined using the DPPH assay in comparison withphenolic antioxidant compounds present in the diet. The reducing strength was also determined by voltammetry at a carbonelectrode both in an aqueous pH 7.0 buer, and in methanol as used for the DPPH assay. The conducting polymers were shown tobe good reducing agents and eective scavengers of free radicals, with 24 DPPH radicals being reduced for each aniline or pyrroleunit on the polymer chains. The signicance of this antioxidant capacity for the application of conducting polymers as biomaterialsis considered.
