Abstract

We here report the use of thin layers of graphene oxide (GO) as a protective coating that inhibits corrosion of underlying magnesium (Mg) metal. In order to coat the GO layer, Mg surfaces were hydroxylated with NaOH solution followed by silanization with dipping in 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) solution and subsequent coating with GO. Here, electrochemical methods were employed to study the corrosion behavior of Mg by coating graphene on it using multi-step coatings. Potentiodynamic polarization measurement determined that the graphene coating effectively inhibited the metal from corrosion. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements suggested that graphene film on metal surface protect the metal from oxidation. This was as a result of impermeability of GO coatings to ions diffuse of oxidizing gas and corrosive liquid solution.

Highlights

Graphene oxide (GO) coatings of Mg was prepared by multi-step coating process.

FTIR and Raman spectra showed the presence of silane and graphene on Mg surface.

The corrosion resistance properties were studied by using polarization and EIS.

GO layers on Mg provided superior corrosion protection compared to silanized samples.

Structural Properties of Polyaniline Blended with PNIPAM
Neupane, Kosh-Prasad,Ha, Jin-Wook The Korea Academia-Industrial cooperation Society 2003 한국산학기술학회논문지 Vol.4 No.3
Polyaniline (PANi) composite particles were synthesized by chemical oxidation polymerization of aniline in presence of poly-n-isopropyl acryl amide (PNIPAM). The PANi particles formed in the reaction medium deposited onto non-conducting PNIPAM template to produce PANi-coated composite particles. The formation of composite was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, and UV-VIS spectroscopy, and their morphological structures were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From the experimental results, it was determined that PANi was successfully coated onto non-conducting PNIPAM.

Abstract

IL-32 is a proinflammatory cytokine, and involved in various diseases including infection, inflammation, and cancer. However, effects of IL-32 on neuroinflammation remain obscure. Herein, we examined the effects of IL-32β on systemic LPS-induced neuroinflammation using IL-32β transgenic (Tg) mice. IL-32β wild type (WT) and Tg mice received LPS injection (5 mg/kg, i.p.), and then neuroinflammatory responses were evaluated. Systemic LPS caused remarkable gliosis in the brain at 12 h regardless of genotypes. The gliosis in WT mice was sustained by 24 h, whereas it became more severe in Tg mice by 24 h. Proinflammatory cytokines and proteins were increased at 12 h both in WT and Tg brains. The elevated levels of TNFα and VCAM-1were not altered over time, while levels of IL-6, IL-1β and iNOS were dropped in WT mice. In contrast, elevated levels IL-6, IL-1β, iNOS and VCAM-1 were sustained, and level of TNFα was augmented in Tg brains by 24 h. Interestingly, level of IL-10 mRNA in Tg mice was remarkably higher than in WT mice at 0 h, which was decreased at 12 h and maintained by 24 h. In WT brain, mRNA level of IL-10 was raised at 12 h after LPS injection, and further increased at 24 h. Activation of NF-κB signaling pathway was detected in glia cells after LPS injection which was exaggerated at 24 h in Tg mice in comparison to WT mice. These results indicate that IL-32β enhances neuroinflammatory responses caused by systemic LPS, and this might be attributable to prolonged activation of NF-κB signaling pathway.

Highlights

Effects of IL-32β on neuroinflammation were evaluated.

Enhanced neuroinflammation was observed in IL-32β transgenic mice.

Prolonged activation of NF-κB might be related to extended neuroinflammation.

This communication presents a fluorescent chemosensor for detecting Pb(II) and Hg(II) in aqueous solutions. The sensor showed a turn-on response to Pb(II) by an enhancement of emission intensity at 380 nm and to Hg(II) by an enhancement of emission intensities at 380 and 475 nm. We have first characterized a unique function of tryptophan as a ligand as well as a quencher for recognition and fluorescent change by a metal binding event.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info
