Aims: The advent of direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA) has enabled high sustained viral response (SVR) rates in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected patients. We aimed to evaluate longitudinal changes in liver function parameters and fibrosis scores in patients who achieved SVR. Methods: A total of 963 patients who received interferon free DAA combination ± ribavirin for HCV infection between December 2015 and February 2017 at the liver unit of the Catholic University of Korea were consecutively recruited. Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, other liver diseases, or those who received liver transplantation were excluded. Four hundred and thirteen patients who achieved sustained viral response 12 weeks post treatment (SVR12) were analyzed and the parameters of liver function, AST to Platelet Index (APRI) and Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) scores before treatment was compared to that of SVR12. Results: Of the 413 patients, 308 (75%) patients had chronic hepatitis and 105 (25%) patients had liver cirrhosis. In the total patients, aspartate aminotransferase were decreased from 61 to 28 IU/L and alanine aminotransferase levels were decreased from 57 to 21 IU/L between baseline and 4 weeks post treatment (p<0.001, both). In the patients with chronic hepatitis, APRI and FIB-4 scores were all significantly improved; APRI score was 0.93±1.28 and 0.51±0.56, p<0.001, FIB-4 score was 3.25±3.79 and 2.67±2.21, p=0.022, (mean±SD), at baseline and SVR12, respectively. In the patients with liver cirrhosis, platelet (PLT), albumin, prothrombine time international normalized ratio (PT INR) levels, APRI and FIB-4 scores were all significantly improved; PLT level was 115±53 and 166±82, p<0.001, albumin level was 3.8±0.6 and 4.3±0.3, p<0.001, PT INR level was 1.15±0.13 and 1.05±0.09, p<0.001, APRI score was 2.13±1.59 and 0.55±0.42, p<0.001, FIB-4 score was 7.83±5.56 and 2.79±1.73, p<0.001, at baseline and SVR12, respectively (mean±SD). Conclusions: This study suggested that a significant improvement in liver function parameters and non-invasive fibrosis markers could be achieved in HCV infected patients who achieved SVR.

This study compared the effects of high linear energy transfer (LET) fast neutrons (35 MeV) on embryotoxicity of ICR mouse exposed to low LET 60Co gamma-rays. At 11.5 days after conception, pregnant mice were exposed to 0-4 Gy of gamma-rays or 0-1.6 Gy of neutrons. The animals were sacrificed on day 18 of gestation and the fetuses were examined for mortality, growth retardation, change in head size and any other morphological abnormalities. With increasing radiation dose, incidence of small head, growth retarded fetuses, cleft palate, dilatation of cerebral ventricle and abnormalities of the extremities in live fetuses rose. Neutron irradiation produced a greater proportion of offspring with very low body weight than with malformations when compared to gamma-rays. In the malformation frequency between 30% and 70%, the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of the neutrons was 2.14 ± 0.48. These results indicate that the embryo exhibits a linear response to increasing doses of neutrons during the period of major organogenesis.

Epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been widely used for non-small-cell lung cancer patients. Its untoward cutaneous effects are largely well known and developed in many patients treated with EGFR TKIs. However trichomegaly of eyelash is rarely reported. Although trichomegaly is not a drug-limiting side effect, it could be troublesome of continuing the treatment because of cosmetic issue or eyeball irritation by long eyelashes. Therefore clinicians are needed to pay attention to this uncommon effect. We herein describe erlotinib induced trichomegaly of eyelashes in a woman with adenocarcinoma of the lung.
The Role of HS-1200 Induced Autophagy in Oral Cancer Cells

Bile acids and synthetic bile acid derivatives induce apoptosis in various kinds of cancer cells and thus have anticancer properties. Recently, it has been suggested that autophagy may play an important role in cancer therapy. However, few data are available regarding the role of autophagy in oral cancers and there have been no reports of autophagic cell death in OSCCs (oral squamous cell carcinoma cells) induced by HS-1200, a synthetic bile acid derivative. We thus examine whether HS-1200 modulates autophagy in OSCCs. Our findings indicate that HS-1200 has anticancer effects in OSCCs, and we observed in these cells that autophagic vacuoles were visible by monodansylcadaverine (MDC)and acridine orange staining. When we analyzed HS-1200-treated OSCC cells for the presence of biochemical markers, we observed that this treatment directly affects the conversion of LC-3II, degradation of p62/SQSTM1 and full-length beclin-1, cleavage of ATG5-12 and the activation of caspase. An autophagy inhibitor suppressed HS-1200-induced cell death in OSCCs, confirming that autophagy acts as a pro-death signal in these cells. Furthermore, HS-1200 shows anticancer activity against OSCCs via both autophagy and apoptosis. Our current findings suggest that HS-1200 may potentially contribute to oral cancer treatment and thus provide useful information for the future development of a new therapeutic agent.
