The neutron-rich carbon isotopes ^(19,17)C and a boron isotope ^(14)B are investigated respectively via proton inelastic and charge-exchange reactions on a liquid hydrogen target at around 70 MeV/nucleon at RIKEN. The invariant mass method in inverse kinematics involving coincidence detection of a charged fragment and a neutron both emitted at forward angles is employed to map the energy spectrum above the neutron decay threshold. Several resonance structures are revealed in the invariant mass spectra, and the nature for some of them is discussed from comparisons of differential cross section data with predictions of microscopic DWBA calculations based on spsdpf shell model wave functions and a recent parametrization of semi-microscopic nucleon-nucleus optical model potential (JLMB). By extrapolating the (p,n) cross sections leading to the 1^+ state at 1.27 MeV in ^(141)B to zero momentum transfer the Gamow-Teller transition strength is deduced. The value is found to compare well with that reported in a β-delayed neutron emission study.

We conducted a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure in 19,608 subjects of east Asian ancestry from the AGEN-BP consortium followed up with de novo genotyping (n = 10,518) and further replication (n = 20,247) in east Asian samples. We identified genome-wide significant (P < 5 ? 10??8) associations with SBP or DBP, which included variants at four new loci (ST7L-CAPZA1, FIGN-GRB14, ENPEP and NPR3) and a newly discovered variant near TBX3. Among the five newly discovered variants, we obtained significant replication in the independent samples for all of these loci except NPR3. We also confirmed seven loci previously identified in populations of European descent. Moreover, at 12q24.13 near ALDH2, we observed strong association signals (P = 7.9 ? 10??31 and P = 1.3 ? 10??35 for SBP and DBP, respectively) with ethnic specificity. These findings provide new insights into blood pressure regulation and potential targets for intervention.

<P>Large-scale meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified > 175 loci associated with fasting cholesterol levels, including total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and triglycerides (TG). With differences in linkage disequilibrium (LD) structure and allele frequencies between ancestry groups, studies in additional large samples may detect new associations. We conducted staged GWAS meta-analyses in up to 69,414 East Asian individuals from 24 studies with participants from Japan, the Philippines, Korea, China, Singapore, and Taiwan. These meta-analyses identified (P < 5 x 10(-8)) three novel loci associated with HDL-C near CD163-APOBEC1 (P = 7.4 x 10(-9)), NCOA2 (P = 1.6 x 10(-8)), and NID2-PTGDR (P = 4.2 x 10(-8)), and one novel locus associated with TG near WDR11-FGFR2 (P = 2.7 x 10(-10)). Conditional analyses identified a second signal near CD163-APOBEC1. We then combined results from the East Asian meta-analysis with association results from up to 187,365 European individuals from the Global Lipids Genetics Consortium in a trans-ancestry meta-analysis. This analysis identified (log(10)Bayes Factor a 6.1) eight additional novel lipid loci. Among the twelve total loci identified, the index variants at eight loci have demonstrated at least nominal significance with other metabolic traits in prior studies, and two loci exhibited coincident eQTLs (P < 1 x 10(-5)) in subcutaneous adipose tissue for BPTF and PDGFC. Taken together, these analyses identified multiple novel lipid loci, providing new potential therapeutic targets.</P>

We built a 8 $\mu$m selected sample of galaxies in the NEP-AKARI field by defining 4redshift bins with the four AKARI bands at 11, 15, 18 and 24 microns (0.15 < z < 0.49,0.75 < z < 1.34, 1.34 < z < 1.7 and 1.7 < z < 2.05) . Our sample contains 4079 sources, 599 are securely detected with$Herschel$/PACS. Also adding ultraviolet (UV) data from $GALEX$, we fit the spectral energy distributions using the physically motivated codeCIGALE to extract the star formation rate, stellar mass, dustattenuation and the AGN contribution to the total infrared luminosity ($L_{\rm IR}$). We discuss the impact of the adoptedattenuation curve and that of the wavelength coverage to estimate these physical parameters. We focus on galaxies with a luminosity close the characteristic $L_{\rm IR}^*$ in the different redshift bins to studythe evolution with redshift of the dust attenuation in these galaxies.

Here, we report that Vibrio parahaemolyticus induces a rapid remodeling of macrophage actin and activates RhoB GTPase. Mutational analysis revealed that the effects depend on type III secretion system 1 regulated translocation of a V. parahaemolyticus effector protein, VP1686, into the macrophages. Remodeling of actin is shown to be necessary for increased bacterial uptake followed by initiation of apoptosis in macrophages. This provides evidence for functional association of the VP1686 in triggering an eatme-and-die signal to the host.

Ni1−xFexO (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1) nanoparticles with several nanometers encapsulated with amorphousSiO2 were prepared by our novel preparation method. A NiO single phase structure was confirmedusing the X-ray diffraction measurements. It is considered that Ni ions are replaced by Fe ionsbecause it is observed that the lattice constant decreases. The temperature dependence behaviorof the magnetization revealed that the blocking temperature, TB, shifted from 17 to 57 K as theamount of Fe ions increased, and that below TB, ferromagnetic behaviors were exhibited. Thecoercive force, HC, increased from 0.8 to 1.5 kOe as the amount of Fe ions increased.

<P>We conducted a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of mean arterial pressure and pulse pressure among 26 600 East Asian participants (stage 1) followed by replication study of up to 28 783 participants (stage 2). For novel loci, statistical significance was determined by a <I>P</I><5.0×10–8 in joint analysis of stage 1 and stage 2 data. For loci reported by the previous mean arterial and pulse pressure genome-wide association study meta-analysis in Europeans, evidence of transethnic replication was determined by consistency in effect direction and a Bonferroni-corrected <I>P</I><1.4×10–3. No novel loci were identified by the current study. Five independent mean arterial pressure variants demonstrated robust evidence for transethnic replication including rs17249754 at <I>ATP2B1</I> (<I>P</I>=7.5×10–15), rs2681492 at <I>ATP2B1</I> (<I>P</I>=3.4×10–7), rs11191593 at <I>NT5C2</I> (1.1×10–6), rs3824755 at <I>CYP17A1</I> (<I>P</I>=1.2×10–6), and rs13149993 at <I>FGF5</I> (<I>P</I>=2.4×10–4). Two additional variants showed suggestive evidence of transethnic replication (consistency in effect direction and <I>P</I><0.05), including rs319690 at <I>MAP4</I> (<I>P</I>=0.014) and rs1173771 at <I>NPR3</I> (<I>P</I>=0.018). For pulse pressure, robust evidence of replication was identified for 2 independent variants, including rs17249754 at <I>ATP2B1</I> (<I>P</I>=1.2×10–5) and rs11191593 at <I>NT5C2</I> (<I>P</I>=1.1×10–3), with suggestive evidence of replication among an additional 2 variants including rs3824755 at <I>CYP17A1</I> (<I>P</I>=6.1×10–3) and rs2681492 at <I>ATP2B1</I> (<I>P</I>=9.0×10–3). Replicated variants demonstrated consistency in effect sizes between East Asian and European samples, with effect size differences ranging from 0.03 to 0.24 mm Hg for mean arterial pressure and from 0.03 to 0.21 mm Hg for pulse pressure. In conclusion, we present the first evidence of transethnic replication of several mean arterial and pulse pressure loci in an East Asian population.</P>
Electron heating experiment using the high harmonic fast wave on LHD
hiroshi Kasahara,K. Saito,N. Takeuchi,R. Kumazawa,T. Seki,T. Mutoh,T. Oosako,Y. Takase 한국물리학회 2006 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.49 No.III
Electron heating experiments using the High Harmonic Fast Wave (HHFW) were performed on the Large Helical Device (LHD). An electron temperature increase from 2.5 keV to 3.6 keV by 1.2 MW of HHFW was observed when both ECH and NBI were used to create a target plasma with high stored energy and electron temperature. When ECH works effectively, the electron density is pumped out, but the rate of decrease of the electron density is reduced when HHFW heating is applied. This result indicates that HHFW is absorbed effectively when the central electron temperature and electron beta are high enough, and suggests that parallel heating of electrons by HHFW reduces electron density pump out caused by perpendicular electron heating by ECH. According to a 1-D calculation, raising the density is more effective for improving singlepass damping than raising the temperature. According to a 2-D full-wave calculation, electron damping occurs in an off-axis region at low density, but wave fields become more concentrated in the core and absorption becomes more centrally localized at high density.e
