        The Lipopolysaccharide from Porphyromonas gingivalis Induces Vascular Permeability

        Porphyromonas gingivalis, one of the major periodontal pathogens, is implicated in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease. The initial stages of periodontal inflammation are accompanied by vascular hyperpermeability. In our present study, we report that the P. gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (LPS) increases the mRNA expression of interleukin-8 (IL-8), a major inducer of vascular permeability, in vascular endothelial cells. P. gingivalis LPS also stimulated the induction of IL-8 secretion in endothelial cells. The P. gingivalis LPS-induced expression of IL-8 was primarily modulated by nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB). P. gingivalis LPS significantly enhanced the vascular permeability both in vitro and in vivo, and a blockade of the IL-8 receptor decreased the P. gingivalis LPS-induced vascular permeability. Taken together, these results suggest that P. gingivalis LPS increases vascular permeability through the NF-κBdependent production of IL-8 in vascular endothelial cells.

Methods: We collated and reviewed previously conducted review studies on border closures during infectious disease outbreaks to derive relevant themes and factors. Results: According to our systematic review on border closures and travel restrictions, the effects of such containment efforts are limited. We suggest considering the following factors when determining whether to impose border closure measures: (1) disease characteristics, (2) timeliness of implementation, (3) transmission delay and the basic reproduction number, (4) globalization and pandemics, and (5) social and economic costs. Conclusions: Our assessment indicates that the effects of border closures are at best temporary and limited. Alternative measures must be contemplated and implemented to suppress the spread of COVID-19 in particular and infectious diseases more broadly.

        The optimal duration of ischemic preconditioning for renal ischemia-reperfusion injury in mice

        Purpose: The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective effects of ischemic preconditioning for different periods of time and to elucidate the optimal safe ischemic preconditioning time for renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in mice. Methods: A total of 25 male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into 5 groups (sham, I/R, ischemic preconditioning [IP]-3, IP-5, and IP-7 groups), in which the kidney was preconditioned with IP of various durations and then subjected to I/R injury (the last 3 groups). To induce renal ischemia, the left renal pedicle was occluded with a nontraumatic microaneurysm clamp for 30 minutes followed by reperfusion for 24 hours. The effects of IP on renal I/R injury were evaluated in terms of renal function, tubular necrosis, apoptotic cell death and inflammatory cytokines. Results: Results indicated that BUN and creatinine (Cr) levels increased significantly in the I/R group, but the elevations were significantly lower in IP groups, especially in the IP-5 group. Histological analysis revealed that kidney injury was markedly decreased in the IP-5 group compared with the I/R group, as evidenced by reduced renal necrosis/apoptosis. In addition, IP significantly inhibited gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) and chemokines (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1). Western blot analysis indicated that the expression levels of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-kB) were upregulated in the I/R group, while expression was inhibited in the IP groups. Conclusion: Five-minute IP had the greatest protective effect against I/R injury.

        Tumor Necrosis Factor-α-Activated Human Adipose Tissue–Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Accelerate Cutaneous Wound Healing through Paracrine Mechanisms

        Human adipose tissue–derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) stimulate regeneration of injured tissues by secretion of various cytokines and chemokines. Wound healing is mediated by multiple steps including inflammation, epithelialization, neoangiogenesis, and proliferation. To explore the paracrine functions of ASCs on regeneration of injured tissues, cells were treated with tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), a key inflammatory cytokine, and the effects of TNF-α-conditioned medium (CM) on tissue regeneration were determined using a rat excisional wound model. We demonstrated that TNF-α CM accelerated wound closure, angiogenesis, proliferation, and infiltration of immune cells into the cutaneous wound in vivo. To assess the role of proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8, which are included in TNF-α CM, IL-6 and IL-8 were depleted from TNF-α CM using immunoprecipitation. Depletion of IL-6 or IL-8 largely attenuated TNF-α CM-stimulated wound closure, angiogenesis, proliferation, and infiltration of immune cells. These results suggest that TNF-α-activated ASCs accelerate cutaneous wound healing through paracrine mechanisms involving IL-6 and IL-8.

        지리산 고로쇠나무 군락의 토양환경과 식생구조

        본 연구는 경남 하동 지리산 지역 고로쇠나무 군락의 토양환경과 식생구조를 분석하여 고로쇠나무의 경영과 분포지에 대한 기초적인 정보를 제공하기 위하여 수행되었다. 고로쇠나무 군락지의 토양 pH와 유기물함량은 각각 4.66, 14.2%로 측정되었으며, 전질소함량은 0.71%, 유효인산 함량은 23.9ppm으로 나타났다. 층위별 중요치는 상층에서 사람주나무가 55.3으로 가장 높았고 다음으로 고로쇠나무(3.29), 비목(29.0), 서나무(26.0), 중층에서는 사람주나무(65.6), 생강나무(34.7), 때죽나무(23.3), 하층에서는 생강나무(15.5)와 덜꿩나무(13.3)의 중요치가 높게 나타났다. 층위별 종다양도는 상층1.123, 중층 1.173, 하층 1.519이며 균재도는 상층0.753, 중층 0.802. 하층 0.984로 나타나 본 조사지역의 고로쇠나무 군락은 상·중층에 비해 하층의 출현식물의 분포가 보다 균일한 경향임을 알 수 있었다. The present study was conducted to investigate the soil condition and vegetation structure of Acer mono communities for providing the information on management and distribution in Mt. Jiri national park. Soil pH of A. mono communities was 4.66. The -contents of soil organic matter, total N and available P₂O_(5) were 14.2%, 0.71% and 23.9ppm, respectively. According to the importance value by layer on the A. mono communities, Sapium japonicum was the highest as 55.3, and followed in order of A. mono 32.9, Lindera erythrocarpa 29.0 and Carpinus laxiflora 26.0 in upper layer, and S. japonicum 65.6, L. obtusiloba 34.7 and Styrax japonica 23.3 in middle layer, and L. obtusiloba 15.5 and Viburnum erosum 13.3 in lower layer. Species diversity and evenness were 1.123, 0.753 in upper, and 1.173 and 0.802 in middle, and 1.519 and 0.984 in lower layer, respectively. It showed that distribution of appeared species of A. mono communities in Mt. Jiri was more uniform tendency in lower layer than upper and middle layer.

        한 結晶의 構造는 唯一單位의 X-線 回折强度資料로부터 決定될 수 있다. Miller指數(hkl)의 函數인 回折强度Ⅰ(hkl)는 異常 散亂(anomalous scattering)이 無視될때 對稱中心點群 卽 Laue群의 對稱性을 나타낸다. 이 論文에서는 모든 結晶系에 對한 回折强度의 唯一單位를 Laue群들의 對稱性으로부터 誘導하여 놓았다. Crystal structures can be determined from the unique data of X-ray intensity. As the X-ray intensity Ⅰ(hkl), which is a function of diffraction plane (hkl), has a center of symmetry assuming anomalous scattering is negligible Ⅰ(hkl) shows the symmetry of a centrosymmetric point group, i.e., a Laue group. In this paper the unique data of the intensity for all crystal systems have been derived from the symmetries of Laue groups.

      • 제주도내 마을공동목장의 초지관리 이용 및 식생상태의 조사

        Pasture management and utilization for beef production, and botanical composition of the pasture on 81 co-operate village farmsin Cheju-Do were surveyed through questionaires and site visits. The study period was 28 days from October 2 to October 30, 1985. The pasture consisted of 45% improved grassland, in which 24.3% of grass species were imported. The improved pastures were fertilized once a year 100-150kg urea/ha. Grazing period of the pastures was about 5 months, beginning later April or early May(60.5% of the pastures) and ending early-or mid-November (80.3%). Distribution of types of vegetation was, in order of magnitude, native pasture (38.7%), improved pasture (24.3%), shrub (10.0%), unfavorable weeds(8.3%), Speies found with the highest percentage was Zoysia japonica(73.9%) in the native pasture, Festuca arundinacea(40.3%) in the improved pasture and Pteridium aquilium (54.4%) among unfavorable weeds.

        各 結晶格子는 230個 空間群 中 하나로 記述되는 對稱性을 가지고 있으며 그 結晶의 構造를 밝히기 爲하여는 그 結晶이 屬한 空間群을 반드시 알아야 한다. 이 論文에서는 230個 空間群을, 그 結晶이 가지고 있는 反射條件에 依하여 明白히 決定되는 空間群과 空間群間의 共通的인 反射條件 때문에 結晶의 構造가 밝혀진 後에야 밝혀지는 空間群으로 分類하여 놓았다. Every crystal lattice has a symmetry which is described by one of the 230 space groups and the space group of a crystal must be known in order to elucidate its structure. In this paper the 230 space groups are classified into two categories, i.e., the space groups that are explicitly determined by the reflection conditions the crystals have and the others that are determined only after the elucidation of the crystal structures because of the common systematic reflection conditions between the space groups.

        結晶들의 外的인 모양은 매우 規則的이며 많은 對稱性을보인다. 結晶들이 나타내는 外的인 對稱要素들은 10가지로 分類되는데 이 對稱要素들은 모든 結晶들을 7個의 系로 分類한다. 이 對稱要素들이 한 固定點올 지나도록 모을 수 있는 個別의 集合의 數는 32個뿐으로 이를 三次元的 點群이라 한다. 이 論題에서는 32個 點群을 誘導하고 整理하였다. Crystals are very regular in external shape and clearly exhibit a great deal of symmetry. The external symmetry elements exhibited by crystals are categorized into a limited number of ten and they classify all crystals into the seven crystal systems. The total number of distinctly different sets of the symmetry elements passing through a fixed point comes out to be only thirty two which are termed as the three-dimensional point groups. The thirty two point groups are derived and summarized here.
