Review on the Potential Therapeutic Roles of Nigella sativa in the Treatment of Patients with Cancer: Involvement of Apoptosis - Black cumin and cancer -

Mollazadeh, Hamid,Afshari, Amir R.,Hosseinzadeh, Hossein KOREAN PHARMACOPUNCTURE INSTITUTE 2017 Journal of pharmacopuncture Vol.20 No.3

Nigella sativa (N. sativa, family Ranunculaceae) is a medicinal plant that has been widely used for centuries throughout the world as a natural remedy. A wide range of chemical compounds found in N. sativa expresses its vast therapeutic effects. Thymoquinone (TQ) is the main component (up to 50%) in the essential oil of N. sativa. Also, pinene (up to 15%), p-cymene (40%), thymohydroquinone (THQ), thymol (THY), and dithymoquinone (DTQ) are other pharmacologically active compounds of its oil. Other terpenoid compounds, such as carvacrol, carvone, 4-terpineol, limonenes, and citronellol, are also found in small quantities in its oil. The main pharmacological characteristics of this plant are immune system stimulatory, anti-inflammatory, hypotensive, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, anti-cancer, hypoglycemic, anti-tussive, milk production, uricosuric, choleretic, anti-fertility, and spasmolytic properties. In this regard, we have searched the scientific databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar with keywords of N. sativa, anti-cancer, apoptotic effect, antitumor, antioxidant, and malignancy over the period from 2000 to 2017. The effectiveness of N. sativa against cancer in the blood system, kidneys, lungs, prostate, liver, and breast and on many malignant cell lines has been shown in many studies, but the molecular mechanisms behind that anti-cancer role are still not clearly understood. From among the many effects of N. sativa, including its anti-proliferative effect, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis induction, ROS generation, anti-metastasis/anti-angiogenesis effects, Akt pathway control, modulation of multiple molecular targets, including p53, p73, STAT-3, PTEN, and $PPAR-{\gamma}$, and activation of caspases, the main suggestive anti-cancer mechanisms of N. sativa are its free radical scavenger activity and the preservation of various anti-oxidant enzyme activities, such as glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and glutathione-S-transferase. In this review, we highlight the molecular mechanisms of apoptosis and the anti-cancer effects of N. sativa, with a focus on its molecular targets in apoptosis pathways.

      • Health monitoring of pressurized pipelines by finite element method using meta-heuristic algorithms along with error sensitivity assessment

        Amirmohammad Jahan,Mahdi Mollazadeh,Abolfazl Akbarpour,Mohsen Khatibinia 국제구조공학회 2023 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.87 No.3

The structural health of a pipeline is usually assessed by visual inspection. In addition to the fact that this method is expensive and time consuming, inspection of the whole structure is not possible due to limited access to some points. Therefore, adopting a damage detection method without the mentioned limitations is important in order to increase the safety of the structure. In recent years, vibration-based methods have been used to detect damage. These methods detect structural defects based on the fact that the dynamic responses of the structure will change due to damage existence. Therefore, the location and extent of damage, before and after the damage, are determined. In this study, fuzzy genetic algorithm has been used to monitor the structural health of the pipeline to create a fuzzy automated system and all kinds of possible failure scenarios that can occur for the structure. For this purpose, the results of an experimental model have been used. Its numerical model is generated in ABAQUS software and the results of the analysis are used in the fuzzy genetic algorithm. Results show that the system is more accurate in detecting high-intensity damages, and the use of higher frequency modes helps to increase accuracy. Moreover, the system considers the damage in symmetric regions with the same degree of membership. To deal with the uncertainties, some error values are added, which are observed to be negligible up to 10% of the error.

Comparative analysis of multiple mathematical models for prediction of consistency and compressive strength of ultra-high performance concrete

        Alireza Habibi,Meysam Mollazadeh,Aryan Bazrafkan,Naida Ademovic Techno-Press 2023 Coupled systems mechanics Vol.12 No.6

Although some prediction models have successfully developed for ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), they do not provide insights and explicit relations between all constituents and its consistency, and compressive strength. In the present study, based on the experimental results, several mathematical models have been evaluated to predict the consistency and the 28-day compressive strength of UHPC. The models used were Linear, Logarithmic, Inverse, Power, Compound, Quadratic, Cubic, Mixed, Sinusoidal and Cosine equations. The applicability and accuracy of these models were investigated using experimental data, which were collected from literature. The comparisons between the models and the experimental results confirm that the majority of models give acceptable prediction with a high accuracy and trivial error rates, except Linear, Mixed, Sinusoidal and Cosine equations. The assessment of the models using numerical methods revealed that the Quadratic and Inverse equations based models provide the highest predictability of the compressive strength at 28 days and consistency, respectively. Hence, they can be used as a reliable tool in mixture design of the UHPC.

      • Curcumin and Silibinin Inhibit Telomerase Expression in T47D Human Breast Cancer Cells

Nasiri, Marzieh,Zarghami, Nosratollah,Koshki, Kazem Nejati,Mollazadeh, Mahdieh,Moghaddam, Mohammad Pourhassan,Yamchi, Mohammad Rahmati,Esfahlan, Rana Jahanban,Barkhordari, Amin,Alibakhshi, Abbas Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.6

Background: Telomerase has been considered as an attractive molecular target for breast cancer therapy. The main objective of this work is to assess the inhibitory effects of silibinin and curcumin, two herbal substances, on telomerase gene expression in breast cancer cells. Materials and Methods: For determination of cell viability tetrazolium-based assays were conducted after 24, 48, and 72 h exposure times and expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase gene was measured with real-time PCR. Results: Each compound exerted cytotoxic effects on T47D cells and inhibited telomerase gene expression, both in a time-and dose-dependent manner. The mixture of curcumin and silibinin showed relatively more inhibitory effect on growth of T47D cells and hTERT gene expression as compared with either agent alone. Conclusions: These findings suggest that cell viability along with hTERT gene expression in breast cancer cells could be reduced by curcumin and silibinin.

Interference of oxygen during the solution combustion synthesis process of ZnO particles: Experimental and data modeling approaches

        E. Garmroudi Nezhad,F. Kermani,Z. Mollaei,M. Mashreghi,J. Vahdati Khakhi,S. Mollazadeh 한국공업화학회 2022 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.107 No.-

In the present study, the ratio of reducing to oxidizing (F/O) elements as an indicator for maximumoxygen interference during the solution combustion synthesis (SCS) process of ZnO particles was determinedusing simple mathematical calculations. The obtained result was called special point (S.P). Tointerpret the role of S.P in the SCS reactions, ZnO particles were synthesized in the presence of citric acid, hexamine, hydrazine, and urea with various F/O values (0.75, 1, 1.25). The correlations between the S.P,physicochemical properties of the synthesized ZnO powders, and density functional theory (DFT) predictionswere investigated. X-ray diffraction results, band-gap values, oxygen vacancy data, DFT results, andS.P points demonstrated the direct relation of these parameters. According to the S.P idea, it can beaffirmed that the structural defects, particle size, optical band-gap (Eg = 3.06), the color of the products, the magnetic properties (0.2 emu/g), and the antibacterial inhibitory (15.625 mg/mL) of the synthesizedparticles were controlled via the interference of O2 during the synthesis process. In fact, the S.P investigationwas suggested that the reaction rate of the combustion synthesis process could regulate the propertiesof ZnO particles.
