We examine whether bank managers use real activities manipulation (or transaction-based earnings management) and accrual-based earnings management as substitutes in managing earnings based on U.S. banking industry. We find that bank managers trade off these two earnings management methods based on their relative costs and that managers adjust the level of accrual-based earnings management according to the level of real activities manipulation realized. In addition, banks with higher exposure to fair value accounting rely less on accrual-based earnings management using loan loss provisions as the extent of fair value exposure increases the availability of transaction-based earnings management. Finally, the trade-off relation between accrual-based earnings management and real-activities manipulation is more pronounced after the 2008 financial crisis. In sum, we provide evidence that bank characteristics and the level of alternative earnings management are important determinants of earnings management activities in banking industry. We also contribute to the literature on the effects of financial crisis and fair value accounting on earnings management choices. In particular, the role of fair value accounting in banks’ earnings management practices should be of interest to regulators as they consider ways to increase stability in the banking sector.
Effect of Smartphone Brand Satisfaction on the Purchase of Other Smart Devices of the Same Brand

This research focuses on the effect of brand perceptions formed through the usage of a smartphone on user satisfaction and on subsequent purchasing decisions for other smart devices of the same brand, using the theoretical background of the Expectation-Confirmation Model in IT. This study showed that the brand expectation confirmation before and after using a smartphone affected brand user experiences (perceived usefulness, perceived playfulness, and perceived aesthetics) significantly. This study is meaningful in that it has defined the perceived playfulness and perceived aesthetics in the existing ECM-IT as ‘user brand experience’ factors, and confirmed the relevant correlations. Also, the confirmation that smartphone usage experience can be fully transferred a user’s intention to purchase other smart devices is what differentiates this study with other studies. The research results show that the user’s playfulness and aesthetics perception formed through smartphone brand usage experience affects both the brand usage satisfaction and the purchase intention of portable and non-portable devices.
Functional group effects on a metal-organic framework catalyst for CO<sub>2</sub> cycloaddition

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A variety of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been reported as efficient catalysts for CO<SUB>2</SUB> fixation reactions, such as cycloaddition to cyclic carbonates. The permanent porosity of the frameworks and the Lewis acidity of the MOF metal sites have been considered as the major contributors to the catalytic activity in the cycloaddition of CO<SUB>2</SUB>. In this study, we have, instead, focused on the effects of the organic functional groups for effective catalytic ability. A total of eight different functionalized Zr-based MOFs were tested. It was revealed that the non-functionalized pristine UiO-66 MOF (UiO=University of Oslo) showed the best conversion at low temperature (77% at 50°C), whereas the hydroxy-functionalized UiO-66-OH MOF displayed the best conversion at high temperature (91% at 140°C). The Zr-MOF could be recycled up to four times without a significant decrease in the reactivity.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The organic functional group effects on MOF-catalyzed CO<SUB>2</SUB> cycloaddition have been examined. </LI> <LI> Non-functionalized Zr-based MOF, UiO-66 showed the best catalytic activity at 50°C. </LI> <LI> The hydroxy-functionalized UiO-66-OH performed cyclic organic carbonate synthesis efficiently at 140°C. </LI> <LI> Various epoxides were successfully converted to cyclic organic carbonates, and the Zr-MOF catalyst could be recycled by simple centrifugation. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

It is now well-proven that wearing the mask is highly effective to prevent disease spread. In this study, we proposed an artificial intelligence-based system to classify whether a person wears a mask or not. We used pretrained convolutional neural network (CNN) to classify whether a person in given images wears a mask or not. The final model achieved 92.28% accuracy. We believe that this system can be used for the entrance of buildings to achieve successful national quarantine.

As the number of lithium-ion batteries discarded at the end of their lifespan increases, interest in ways to recycle them is increasing. In this paper, an experiment was conducted to recover cathode active materials from spent lithium-ion batteries using solvents as part of direct recycling, and the electrochemical properties of the cathode active materials recovered for each solvent were reported. The experimental results suggest the possibility of recycling the recovered cathode active materials.

Ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injury accelerates the cardiomyocytes (CMs) death by oxidative stress, and thereby deteriorates cardiac function. There has been a paradigm shift in the therapeutic perspective more towards the prevention or amelioration of damage caused by reperfusion. Cardiac microvascular endothelial cells (CMECs) are more vulnerable to reperfusion injury and play the crucial roles more than CMs in the pathological process of early I/R injury. In this study, we investigate that CU06-1004, as a vascular leakage blocker, can improve cardiac function by inhibiting CMEC’s hyperpermeability and subsequently reducing the neutrophil’s plugging and infiltration in infarcted hearts. CU06-1004 was delivered intravenously 5 min before reperfusion and the rats were randomly divided into three groups: (1) vehicle, (2) low-CU06-1004 (1 mg/kg, twice at 24 h intervals), and (3) high-CU06-1004 (5 mg/kg, once before reperfusion). CU06-1004 treatment reduced necrotic size and cardiac edema by enhancing vascular integrity, as demonstrated by the presence of intact junction proteins on CMECs and surrounding pericytes in early I/R injury. It also decreased the expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) on CMECs, resulting in reduced infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages. Echocardiography showed that the CU06-1004 treatment significantly improved cardiac function compared with the vehicle group. Interestingly, single high-dose treatment with CU06-1004 provided a greater functional improvement than repetitive low-dose treatment until 8 weeks post I/R. These findings demonstrate that CU06-1004 enhances vascular integrity and improves cardiac function by preventing lethal myocardial I/R injury. It can provide a promising therapeutic option, as potential adjunctive therapy to current reperfusion strategies.

The drug repurposing strategy has been applied to the development of emergency COVID-19 therapeutic medicines. Current drug repurposing approaches have been directed against RNA polymerases and viral proteases. Recently, we found that the inhibition of the interaction between the SARS-CoV-2 structural nucleocapsid (N) and spike (S) proteins decreased viral replication. In this study, drug repurposing candidates were screened by in silico molecular docking simulation with the SARS-CoV-2 structural N protein. In the ChEMBL database, 1994 FDA-approved drugs were selected for the in silico virtual screening against the N terminal domain (NTD) of the SARS-CoV-2 N protein. The tyrosine 109 residue in the NTD of the N protein was used as the center of the ligand binding grid for the docking simulation. In plaque forming assays performed with SARS-CoV-2 infected Vero E6 cells, atovaquone, abiraterone acetate, and digoxin exhibited a tendency to reduce the size of the viral plagues without affecting the plaque numbers. Abiraterone acetate significantly decreased the accumulation of viral particles in the cell culture supernatants in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, abiraterone acetate significantly decreased the production of N protein and S protein in the SARS-CoV-2-infected Vero E6 cells. In conclusion, abiraterone acetate has therapeutic potential to inhibit the viral replication of SARS-CoV-2.

All-solid-state batteries are attracting attention as next-generation secondary batteries for electric vehicles or ESS because they do not pose the risk of explosion or fire. However, most solid electrolytes have limitations in practical use due to the difficulty in expanding them to large areas. In this study, a composite solid electrolyte sheet combining an oxide-based inorganic solid electrolyte and a polymer solid electrolyte was manufactured through a tape casting process. As a result, it was confirmed that the manufactured composite solid electrolyte sheet had an ionic conductivity in the range of 3.33 to 4.45 × 10<SUP>-4</SUP> S/cm and a uniform thickness in the range of 39 to 41㎛. In addition, as a result of manufacturing Li/CSE/LFP cells and evaluating their cycle characteristics, they showed a high capacity retention rate of 82.33% in 50 cycles at 0.33 C and 70℃. Therefore, this study provides a practical strategy for fabricating all-solid-state batteries based on composite solid electrolytes.
