The Relationship between Ghrelin and Copeptin Levels, and Anxiety and Depression Levels in Suicide Attempts

        Metin Atescelik,Mustafa Yilmaz,Sevda Korkmaz,Mehmet Cagri Goktekin,Mehtap Gurger,NevinIlhan 대한정신약물학회 2017 CLINICAL PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE Vol.15 No.3

Objective: It was aimed to detect acylated ghrelin (AG), unacylated ghrelin (UG) and copeptin levels in patients with suicide attempts and to determine if these biomarkers are risk factors for suicide attempts. Methods: Serum copeptin, AG and GU levels were screened in 128 patients who were admitted to emergency department with suicide attempts and 59 healthy controls. Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were applied simultaneously, and the data were compared statistically. Results: AG, UG and copeptin levels were higher in the patient group compared with the healthy control group. BAI scores of patients were found to be positively correlated with BDI scores. While there was a significant difference (p=0.0064) between psychiatric and non-psychiatric patients with suicide attempts in terms of BAI scores, there were no differences in BDI scores and levels of biomarkers. We found significantly increased BDI and BAI scores and increased levels of AG, UG and copeptin in psychiatric and non-psychiatric patients compared with healthy individuals. The specificities yielded by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis in patients with suicide attempts were as follows: 91.53% for AG, 72.88% for UG and 94.92% for copeptin. Conclusion: Serum levels of AG, UG and copeptin increase with increasing anxiety and depression in patients with suicide attempts. Increased levels of AG, UG and copeptin could be considered a risk factor for suicide attempts.

HARMONIC CURVATURE FUNCTIONS OF SOME SPECIAL CURVES IN GALILEAN 3-SPACE

        Yilmaz, Beyhan,Metin, Seyma,Gok, Ismail,Yayli, Yusuf The Honam Mathematical Society 2019 호남수학학술지 Vol.41 No.2

The aim of the paper is to characterize some curves with the help of their harmonic curvature functions. First of all, we have defined harmonic curvature function of an arbitrary curve and have re-determined the position vectors of helices in terms of their harmonic curvature functions in Galilean 3-space. Then, we have investigated the relation between rectifying curves and Salkowski (or anti-Salkowski) curves in Galilean 3-space. Furthermore, the position vectors of them are obtained via the serial approach of the curves. Finally, we have given some illustrated examples of helices and rectifying curves with some assumptions.

      • Investigation of ICAM-1 and β3 Integrin Gene Variations in Patients with Brain Tumors

Yilmaz, Umit,Zeybek, Umit,Kahraman, Ozlem Timirci,Kafadar, Ali Metin,Toptas, Bahar,Yamak, Nesibe,Celik, Faruk,Yaylim, Ilhan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.10

Background: Primary brain tumors constitute a small percent of all malignant cancers, but their etiology remains poorly understood. ${\beta}3$ integrin (ITGB3) has been recognized to play influential roles in angiogenesis, tumor growth and metastasis. Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is a surface glycoprotein important for tumor invasion and angiogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate whether specific genetic polymorphisms of ICAM-1 and ITGB3 could be associated with brain cancer development and progression in a Turkish population. Our study is the first to our knowledge to investigate the relationship between brain tumor risk and ICAM-1 and ${\beta}3$ integrin gene polymorphisms. Materials and Methods: The study covered 92 patients with primary brain tumors and 92 age-matched healthy control subjects. Evaluation of ${\beta}3$ integrin (Leu33Pro (rs5918)) and ICAM-1 (R241G (rs1799969) and K469E (rs5498)) gene polymorphisms was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results: According to results of our research, the A allele of the ICAM-1 R241G gene polymorphism appeared to be a risk factor for primary brain tumors (p<0.001). Similarly, the frequency of the A mutant allele of ICAM-1 R241G was statistically significant in patients with brain tumors classified as glioma (p<0.001). When allele and genotype distributions of ICAM-1 K469E, ICAM-1 R241G and ${\beta}3$ integrin Leu33Pro gene polymorphisms were evaluated with age, sex, and smoking, there were no statistically significant differences. Haplotype analysis revealed that the frequencies of GAC (rs1799969-rs5498-rs5918) and GAT (rs1799969-rs5498-rs5918) haplotypes were significantly lower in patients as compared with controls (p=0.001; p=0.036 respectively). Conclusions: This study provides the first evidence that ICAM-1 R241G SNP significantly contributes to the risk of primary brain tumors in a Turkish population. In addition, our results suggest that ICAM-1 R241G in combination ICAM-1 K469E may have protective effects against the development of brain cancer.

      • Experimental and numerical investigations on reinforcement arrangements in RC deep beams

        Husem, Metin,Yilmaz, Mehmet,Cosgun, Suleyman I. Techno-Press 2022 Advances in concrete construction Vol.13 No.3

Reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams are critical structural elements used in offshore pile caps, rectangular cross-section water tanks, silo structures, transfer beams in high-rise buildings, and bent caps. As a result of the low shear span ratio to effective depth (a/d) in deep beams, arch action occurs, which leads to shear failure. Several studies have been carried out to improve the shear resistance of RC deep beams and avoid brittle fracture behavior in recent years. This study was performed to investigate the behavior of RC deep beams numerically and experimentally with different reinforcement arrangements. Deep beams with four different reinforcement arrangements were produced and tested under monotonic static loading in the study's scope. The horizontal and vertical shear reinforcement members were changed in the test specimens to obtain the effects of different reinforcement arrangements. However, the rebars used for tension and the vertical shear reinforcement ratio were constant. In addition, the behavior of each deep beam was obtained numerically with commercial finite element analysis (FEA) software ABAQUS, and the findings were compared with the experimental results. The results showed that the reinforcements placed diagonally significantly increased the load-carrying and energy absorption capacities of RC deep beams. Moreover, an apparent plastic plateau was seen in the load-displacement curves of these test specimens in question (DE-2 and DE-3). This finding also indicated that diagonally located reinforcements improve displacement ductility. Also, the numerical results showed that the FEM method could be used to accurately predict RC deep beams'behavior with different reinforcement arrangements.

      • Predictive Role of Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin in Early Diagnosis of Platin-Induced Renal Injury

        Seker, Mehmet Metin,Deveci, Koksal,Seker, Ayse,Sancakdar, Enver,Yilmaz, Ali,Turesin, A. Kerim,Kacan, Turgut,Babacan, Nalan A. Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.2

Background: Acute kidney injury is an important issue in chemotherapy receiving patients an neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin has been proposed as a novel marker. We here aimed to assess the role of urinary levels for assessment after platin exposure. Materials and Methods: Patients who had treated with cisplatin or carboplatin or oxaliplatin containg regimens were included in this study. Baseline and postchemotherapy serum urea, creatinine, urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and urine creatinine levels were determined. To avoid the effects of hydration during chemotherapy infusion the urinary neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin/urine creatinine ratio was used to determine acute kidney injury. Results: Of a total of 42 patients receiving platin compounds,14 (33.3%) received cisplatin containing regimens, 14 (33.3%) received carboplatin and 14 (33.3%) oxaliplatin. The median age was 60 (37-76) years. Nineteen of the patients (45.2%) had lung cancer, 12 (28.6%) colorectal cancer and 11 (26.2%) others. The median pre and post chemotherapy urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin/urine creatinin ratio was 15.6 ng/mg and 35.8 ng/mg (p=0.041) in the cisplatin group, 32.5 ng/mg and 86.3 ng/mg (p=0.004) in the carboplatin group and 40.9 ng/mg and 62.3 ng/mg (p=0.243) in the oxaliplatin group. Conclusions: Nephrotoxicity is a serious side effect of chemotherapeutic agentslike cisplatin and carbopaltin, but only to a lower extent oxaliplatin. All platin compounds must be used carefully and urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin measurement seems to be promising in detecting acute kidney injury earlier than with creatinine.

OPTIMIZATION-ORIENTED HIGH FIDELITY NFIR MODELS FOR ESTIMATING INDICATED TORQUE IN DIESEL ENGINES

        Gokhan Alcan,Volkan Aran,Mustafa Unel,Metin Yilmaz,Cetin Gurel,Kerem Koprubasi 한국자동차공학회 2020 International journal of automotive technology Vol.21 No.3

In this paper, optimization-oriented high fidelity indicated torque models which cover the whole operating regions under both steady-state and transient cycles for heavy-duty vehicles are developed. Two different experiments are performed and their data are merged to be utilized in the training of the models. In the first experiment, all combustion input channels are excited by quadratic chirp signals with different sweeps in their frequency profiles. Different from the first experiment, the engine speed is excited by ramp-hold signals in the second experiment. The estimations of friction, pumping and inertia torques in addition to the torque measured from the engine dynamometer are utilized in the indicated torque calculations. In order to model the calculated indicated torque, a nonlinear finite impulse response (NFIR) model with a single layer sigmoid neural network has been designed. A sensitivity analysis is performed by generating several models with different number of input regressors and neurons. Experimental results show that the majority of the models in a selected wide range of the model parameters are validated with fit accuracies higher than 90 % and 85 % on the World Harmonized Stationary Cycle (WHSC) and the World Harmonic Transient Cycle (WHTC), respectively.

Effects of Minor Cu and Si Additions on Glass Forming Ability and Mechanical Properties of Co-Fe-Ta-B Bulk Metallic Glass

        Ziya Ozgur Yazici,Aytekin Hitit,Yilmaz Yalcin,Metin Ozgul 대한금속·재료학회 2016 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.22 No.1

Effect of Cu and Si substitutions for Co and B on the glass forming ability (GFA) of Co(43-x)CuxFe20Ta5.5B(31.5-x)Siy (x=0-1.5 and y=5-10) were systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. In order to evaluate the contribution of copper and silicon, appropriate amounts of copper and silicon were individually introduced to the base alloy composition. By using the effects of copper and silicon together, significant enhancement was obtained and the critical casting thickness (CCT) of the base alloy was increased three times from 2 mm to 6 mm. Moreover, mechanical properties of the alloys were examined by compression tests and Vickers hardness measurements. The compression test results revealed that the glassy alloys having enhanced GFA shows high strength of about 3500- 4000 MPa. In addition, existence of (Co,Fe)2B and (Co,Fe)20.82Ta2.18B6 crystalline phases in glassy matrix influences the hardnesses of the alloys compared to monolitic glassy structure having hardness of about 1200 Hv.
