Microstructures and mechanical properties of extruded and heat treated Mg-6Zn-1Si-0.5Mn alloys
Mendis, C.L.,Oh-ishi, K.,Ohkubo, T.,Shin, K.S.,Hono, K. Elsevier Sequoia 2012 Materials science & engineering. properties, micro Vol.553 No.-
Si-rich intermetallic particles stabilize the fine grained microstructure in extruded Mg-6Zn-1Si-0.5Mn alloy, resulting in a yield strength (YS) of ∼200MPa, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of ∼310MPa with an elongation of ∼20%. Ca additions further refine the grain size leading to an increase in UTS by 30MPa with no decrease in YS and elongation. The extruded Mg-6Zn-1Si-0.5Mn alloy can be age-hardened with the precipitation of fine [0001]Mg rod-like β1' (Mg4Zn7) particles and YS∼290MPa and UTS∼320MPa were achieved in the peak aged condition. The mechanical properties were further enhanced by pre-aging the alloy at 70oC due to the refinement of the precipitate microstructure with YS∼350MPa and UTS∼360MPa.
An in vitro cellular analysis of the radical scavenging efficacy of chitooligosaccharides
Mendis, Eresha,Kim, Moon-Moo,Rajapakse, Niranjan,Kim, Se-Kwon Elsevier 2007 Life sciences Vol.80 No.23
<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Despite extensive study on biological activities of chitosan and chitooligosaccharides (COS), there is no experimental evidence available as to COS mediated inhibition of free radical damage in cellular oxidizing systems. In this study, radical scavenging efficacies of different molecular weight bearing COS were assessed and their intracellular radical scavenging effects were tested employing B16F1, murine melanoma cell line. The results exhibited appreciable suppression in occurrence of intracellular radical species in the presence of low molecular weight bearing COS (<1 kDa) confirming low molecular weight is important for observed activities in biological systems. However, DNA oxidation carried out in the presence of COS clearly exhibited that COS exert protective effect on oxidative damage of purified genomic DNA regardless of molecular weight. Low molecular weight bearing COS was observed to be successively participated in suppression of NF-κB gene promoter activity suggesting its capability to prevent oxidative stress related disease complications. Moreover, induction of intracellular glutathione (GSH) level in the presence of COS promoted the effectiveness of COS to act against cellular oxidative stress.</P>
Wind-induced fatigue design of a cruciform shaped mast
Mendis, P.A.,Dean, B. Techno-Press 2000 Wind and Structures, An International Journal (WAS Vol.3 No.1
The cruciform shaped mast over 47 storey, Telecom Corporate Building in Melbourne, Australia rises to a height of approximately 25 m above the roof level. As the members are subjected to very high fluctuating loads under wind, the design was mainly governed by wind-induced fatigue. A detailed fatigue analysis was carried out according to the requirements of the Australian Steel Structures Code, AS4100. The wind-induced fatigue analysis procedure is described in the paper. The fatigue design of this mast is used as an example to illustrate some potential problems of relevant specifications in AS4100 and to outline some of the more important parameters in the fatigue analysis.

A high strength bulk nano-crystalline Al-1Fe-(0-1)Zr alloys were processed by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering. The high yield strength of ∼850MPa was achieved in an Al-1Fe-0.5Zr alloy with 19% strain in compression. The high strength was attributed to the nanosized Al-Fe grains and the dispersion of fine Al6Fe particles. High temperature compressive yield strength of 455MPa and elongation of 16.7% was achieved at 250oC.
Basis for the design of lateral reinforcement for high-strength concrete columns
Mendis, P.A.,Kovacic, D.,Setunge, S. Techno-Press 2000 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.9 No.6
This paper attempts to provide a theoretical basis for the design of high-strength concrete columns in terms of the spacing of lateral reinforcement. In order to achieve this, important concepts had to be addressed such as the choice of a measure of ductile behaviour and a realistic high-strength concrete stress-strain model, as well as limiting factors such as longitudinal steel buckling and lateral steel fracture. A design method incorporating above factors are suggested in the paper. It is shown that both buckling of longitudinal steel and hoop fracture will not demand a reduction in spacing of lateral ties with increase in compressive strength of concrete.
Chindia: Does Culture Matter in Hindu and Confucian Economies?
Patrick Mendis 연세대학교 동서문제연구원 2008 Global economic review Vol.37 No.4
China and India (Chindia) have begun in recent years to enjoy growing measures of economic success, reversing the centuries of structural poverty and their negligible rates of economic growth. This article examines the influence of varying cultural propensities – Hinduism in India and Confucianism in China -- and their impact on each country’s economic turnaround. It discusses the historical circumstances that shaped Chindia’s perspectives on foreign direct investment and how the external forces contributed to their domestic policymaking. It also addresses three ways in which culture can affect economy and the two major events that cemented the direction of Chindian economic growth. Finally, the paper presents a comparative analysis of China and India and their respective impact of culture on development. It asserts that the forces of culture and its historical development do matter, especially when it comes for a nation to reverse its deprived and stagnated situation and to achieve a status of economic powerhouse.
