        Bioelectrical Impedance May Predict Cell Viability During Ischemia and Reperfusion in Rat Liver

        Ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury is a major cause of hepatic failure after liver surgery, but no method could monitor or predict it real-time during surgery. We measured bioelectrical impedance (BEI) and cell viability to assess the usefulness of BEI during I/R in rat liver. A 70% partial liver ischemia model was used. BEI was measured at various frequencies. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content, and palmitic acid oxidation rate were measured, and histological changes were observed in order to quantify liver cell viability. BEI changed significantly during ischemia at low frequency. In the ischemia group, BEI increased gradually during 60 min of ischemia and had a tendency to plateau thereafter. The ATP content decreased below 20% of the baseline level. In the I/R group, BEI recovered to near baseline level. After 24 hr of reperfusion, the ATP contents decreased to below 50% in 30,60 and 120 min of ischemia and the palmitic acid metabolic rates decreased to 91%, 78%, and 74%, respectively, compared with normal liver. BEI may be a good tool for monitoring I/R during liver surgery. The liver is relatively tolerant to ischemia,however after reperfusion, liver cells may be damaged depending upon the duration of ischemia.

        <P>Arabidopsis thaliana Cell Growth Defect factor 1 (Cdf1) has been implicated in promotion of proapoptotic Bax-like cell death via the induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Here we report a conserved function of a chloroplast-targeting Cdf-related gene Responsive to Senescence (CRS) using CRS overexpression and loss of function in plants as well as CRS heterologous expression in yeast. CRS expression was strongly induced in senescent leaves, suggesting its main functions during plant senescence. CRS expression in yeast mitochondria increased the ROS level and led to cell death in a manner similar to Cdf1. In whole plants, overexpression of CRS caused the loss of chlorophylls (Chls) and the rapid onset of leaf senescence, while the lack of CRS led to the delay of leaf senescence in a loss-of-function mutant, crs. The higher and lower accumulation of H(2)O(2) was correlated with early and late senescence in CRS-overexpressing and crs mutant plants, respectively. Furthermore, expression of senescence-related marker genes and metacaspase genes was induced in CRS-overexpressing plants in response to dark. Our findings suggest that CRS plays a key role in the leaf senescence process that accompanies H(2)O(2) accumulation resulting in cell death promotion.</P>

      • Dynamic burstiness of word-occurrence and network modularity in textbook systems

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We show that the dynamic burstiness of word occurrence in textbook systems is attributed to the modularity of the word association networks. At first, a measure of dynamic burstiness is introduced to quantify burstiness of word occurrence in a textbook. The advantage of this measure is that the dynamic burstiness is decomposable into two contributions: one coming from the inter-event variance and the other from the memory effects. Comparing network structures of physics textbook systems with those of surrogate random textbooks without the memory or variance effects are absent, we show that the network modularity increases systematically with the dynamic burstiness. The intra-connectivity of individual word representing the strength of a tie with which a node is bound to a module accordingly increases with the dynamic burstiness, suggesting individual words with high burstiness are strongly bound to one module. Based on the frequency and dynamic burstiness, physics terminology is classified into four categories: fundamental words, topical words, special words, and common words. In addition, we test the correlation between the dynamic burstiness of word occurrence and network modularity using a two-state model of burst generation.</P>

      • Fabrication of YBa<sub>2</sub>Cu<sub>3</sub>O<sub>7−δ</sub> superconducting nanofibres by electrospinning

        <P>YBa<SUB>2</SUB>Cu<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7−δ</SUB> superconducting nanofibres were successfully fabricated via the electrospinning method in combination with the sol–gel process. The solution was prepared by the sol–gel process with a homogeneous aqueous PVA solution containing Y, Ba, and Cu acetates. The viscosity of the precursor sol for electrospinning was controlled by the evaporation of solvent and a condensation reaction. The electrospun nanofibres were pyrolysed to remove PVA or volatile components, and then sintered to generate a superconducting phase. The critical transition temperature (<I>T</I><SUB>c</SUB>) of superconducting YBa<SUB>2</SUB>Cu<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7−δ</SUB> nanofibres was measured by DC susceptibility tests. By optimizing the electrospinning process and following heat treatments, superconducting YBa<SUB>2</SUB>Cu<SUB>3</SUB>O<SUB>7−δ</SUB> nanofibres with a <I>T</I><SUB>c</SUB> = 92.2 K could be produced. </P>

      • Upregulation of MicroRNA 181c Expression in Gastric Cancer Tissues and Plasma

        Objective: To test the microRNA-181c (miR-181c) expression in tissues and plasma of gastric cancer (GC) cases, analyze any correlations, and explore the possibility of miR-181c as a potential molecular marker for GC diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Relative miR-181c expression levels in cancers and plasma from 30 GC patients was tested using reverse transcription-real-time fluorescent quantitation PCR and compared to that in samples from 30 gastric ulcer and 30 chronic gastritis patients. Results: The miR-181c expression level in the GC tissues was significantly higher than that in the gastric ulcer and chronic gastritis tissues (P = 0.000), as was the miR-181c expression level in the GC plasma (P = 0.000). We determined that miR-181c expression in GC plasma was positively correlated to its expression in the GC tissues (P = 0.000). Conclusions: The expression of miR-181c is upregulated in GC tissues and plasma, and the miR-181c expression level in GC plasma is positively correlated to that in the corresponding cancer tissues. Plasma miR-181c is possibly a new serological marker for GC diagnosis.

        Impaired Cation Transport May Lead to Bioelectrical Impedance Changes during Hepatic Ischemia

        Purpose: Ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) injury is a major cause of hepatic failure after liver surgery, but there is no direct method to monitor it in real-time (like an electrocardiogram in heart disease) during surgery. Recently we found the possible role of bioelectrical impedance (BEI) to monitor I/R injury in liver. But the mechanism responsible for ischemia-related BEI changes has not been clearly determined. Methods: The authors used an LCR meter to quantify BEI changes at 0.12 ㎑. Livers were subjected to 70% partial ischemia for 120 minutes, and ATP contents, cation changes in extracellular fluid (ECF; determined using an in vivo intracellular microdialysis technique), hepatocyte sizes, and histological changes were then examined. Results: Liver tissue BEI was found to increase gradually during the first 60 minutes of ischemia and then tended to plateau. During the same period, intracellular ATP contents decreased to below 20% of the baseline level, [Na?] in ECF decreased from 150.4±3.8 to 97.8±10.6 mmol/L, and [K?] in ECF increased from 7.5±0.3 to 34.3±5.5 mmol/L during the first 60 minutes of ischemia. Hepatocyte diameter increased by ∼20% during the first 60 minutes of ischemia. Conclusion: This study suggests that BEI changes during hepatic ischemia are probably caused by sodium and potassium concentration changes in the ECF due to reduced intracellular ATP contents.

        Depletion of BIS sensitizes A549 cells to treatment with cisplatin

        Bcl-2 interacting cell death suppressor (BIS), an anti-stress and ant-apoptotic protein, has been reported to be expressed at high levels in various cancers. In a previous study, we reported on a high level of expression of BIS in non small cell lung cancer tissues. To explore the significance this finding in lung cancer, in this study, we investigated the effect of BIS depletion on the survival of A549 cells upon treatment with anti-tumor agents. BIS knock out A549 cells, prepared by the CRISPR/Cas9 system, revealed a substantial decrease in survival to cisplatin treatment. Western blotting and quantitative real time PCR assays indicated that, among the anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 family proteins, the expression of Mcl-1 was decreased by BIS depletion at the protein level not at the mRNA level. Since BIS expression has been shown to be regulated by HSF1, we subsequently illustrated the sensitization effect of KRIBB11, a HSF1 inhibitor, on cisplatin-induced toxicity in A549 cells, accompanied by a decrease in both BIS and Mcl-1 expression. Our results suggest that BIS-mediated Mcl-1 stabilization represents a potential therapeutic target for cancer therapy.

        중국 조선족 항일동요 연구

        이 글은 1930년대부터 1945년 사이에 항일을 주제로 창작된 동요를 대상으로 구체적인 작품의 내용을 분석하고 항일동요의 역사적 위상과 그 가치를 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 분석을 통하여 아래와 같은 결론을 얻는다. 첫째, 항일동요는 혁명적사실주의 창작방법으로 시대의 본질을 진실하게 반영하면서 혁명적 낭만주의를 뚜렷이 보여주고 있다. 둘째, 항일동요는 혁명가요로서 명확한 목적성, 선동성, 구조상의 도식화 등 특점을 가지고 있고 혁명적 내용으로 일관되었고 사상적 지향이 뚜렷하고 가창성이 풍부하다. 셋째, 항일동요는 항일전쟁의 승리를 위하여 분투하는 아동뿐만 아니라 남녀노소들까지 널리 부른 전민의 가요였다고 할 수 있다. 넷째, 항일동요는 항일구국투쟁에서 생존을 위한 문학으로서 중국 조선족 아동문학의 귀중한 정신적 재부이다. 항일동요는 아동들의 혁명의식을 강화하고 계몽사상을 선전하고 사상 예술적 특징을 보여주는 반면 동요로서 예술성이 결핍한 제약성을 가지고 있지만 중국 조선족 아동문학의 역사가 형성될 수 있는 중요한 부분이고 조선족 어린이들을 혁명자로 성장시키고 항일전쟁의 승리를 위하여 적적적인 역할을 하였다 This article mainly deals with the Chinese-Korean national minority and anti-Japanese nursery rhymes created from 1920 to 1945 during colonization as the research object, and analyzes its historical status and value. This article focuses on the anti-Japanese nursery rhymes and analyzes its content and value. First of all, the anti-Japanese nursery rhymes were produced in a special period and have distinctive historical characteristics. Chinese-Korean national minority anti-Japanese nursery rhymes not only inherited and developed the tradition of singing and creation, but also help the chinese korean minority children to grow as revolutionary fighter. Secondly, the chinese Korean national minority anti-japanese nursery rhymes were totally different before 1930. Before 1930 these rhymes had not specific author and all rhythms were close to folk songs. but after 1930, professional children’s literature writers began to produce nursery rhymes with distinctive revolutionary idea, rhythm and impassioned characteristics. Third the anti-Japanese nursery rhymes have played an active role in strengthening the revolutionary consciousness of Chinese Korean national minority children. However, quantity and the artistic level are insufficient & immature. It lacks classics and fine works as well. These are the limitation with this research and i wish that future research deals with anti-Japanese nursery rhymes, would overcome these limitation. The anti-Japanese nursery rhyme is a product of the struggle against the Japanese imperialist powers. It not only played a revolutionary education role for Chinese Korean national minority children, but also continuously encouraged children’s anti-Japanese enthusiasm and raised their anti-Japanese consciousness. It is an important part of Chinese Korean national minority children’s literature.
